Pugging: Guards Perspective
I’ve had groups on both ends of the PuG-ing spectrum, but not many downright horrible ones.
Most of the successful groups I’ve encountered employ proper communication, while those that don’t tend to fail at key points like the Dredge gates/Imbued Grawl Shaman/Giant Ice Elemental.
I usually try to switch traits, support skills, and weapon/armor sets to suit the situation (even mid-fractal for different phases), but groups are sometimes too impatient and start events before I (or anyone else who bothers switching) can tell them, resulting in reduced overall group efficiency because we may be missing out on key utilities like reflection.
This often results in a wipe, or at least a very frustrating encounter if someone else is able to provide the utility needed.
I don’t understand what you are saying OP. You are intentionally playing sub-par to see how your group reacts?
not through out the course of the dungeon but when i feel like it. but i try to do my best if 4 of them are performing exceptionally.
i don’t do it all the time. i do random sampling. as ive said when i feel like it. if this short test is done, then i play naturally.
i like to know the attitude/personality of my pug team mates. it’s just me.
(edited by alcopaul.2156)
Why is this in the Guardian forums?
so i’ve pugged 99% of my level in FoTM and most of my encounters with them are smooth. smooth as in no one is talking and the flow of the events are like placed like falling dominoes. everything falls together. but i encounter a few bumps while im pugging.
1.) i notice when the group becomes heavy, people start blaming people or people "DC"s.
2.) i notice when i deliberately use wall of reflection when the only target is a melee boss to size up the guardian team mate that i have, he starts to look afk and disconnect from a map.but there are good parts
1.) some people are patient and encourages the group to do well and try again
2.) if map is impossible, all goes out well and consider it a day.
3.) patient and relaxed people don’t mind the deaths.i size up my pugs. i try to gauge the vibe. as i said, i use wall of reflection on a melee boss. or not use the skills on harpies that i fall everytime. or use 2 spirit weapons sword and hammer at the same time. i purposely die (but there are unavoidable circumstances when i get ganked or stand on a multiple stacked aoe and appear to my partymates that i get 1 shotted and prolly wearing a mf armor (while i really wear Rurik’s armor))
How about you? How do you deal with your pugs? How was your experience with them?
Sounds to me like you’re one of the bad parts of a pug. Purposefully trolling the group you joined to get a reaction would get you added to my ignore list for future reference. Being new and willing to learn would get advice and perhaps future groups with my static when we are missing one.
Most of the people that have pugged with us from time to time though have all been very positive and honest if new to something. Only two things get my goat and that is trolling and mf gear, two things I have been fortunate enough to not have to deal with a lot and when I have my group is strong enough to make up for it even though we should’nt have to.
I have a 99% pug success rate. Most of this is due to our profession because we have almost literally every counters against any situation. However, this is a story of one of those rare chances that I join a fail group that there’s nothing I can do about it:
It was me, a guardian, with two thieves, a warrior, and a engineer. We were on Volcanic Fractal and at the last boss. One of the thief and the engineer keep dying to the agony arrow (I even taught them how to glitch the arrow). The warrior is half AFK all the time. The other thief, which is also the leader, is alright but keep insisting in using the lava trick (We never even came close with that plan). The problem we had is not be able to break the shield (when you have two thieves and a warrior auto-attacking with a bunch of adds in front to soak the projectile, this is doom to fail). Even with my 50 seconds range immunity, I couldn’t carry this fail group since we either fail at the shield or they just die during normal phase. Warrior got fed up and left then group disbanded. I also did the Cliffside Fractal with this group before Volcanic. They all died to pre-fixed Legendary Archdiviner final fight leaving me soloing him throughout phase two (the circles + agony aoe phase). I think this was on Fractal 31-32. Yes, you can still find bads on higher Fractals.
Most of the time when I’m with pugs, I just suck it up and work with them even if they don’t perform up to my standards. However, those are rare. I have a lot of wonderful pugs and added them onto my friend lists. I usually prefer a more fun and relaxing atmosphere when it comes to pugs.
(edited by Trungalung.7850)
I don’t “Deal” with pugs. As a Guardian, I try my best to help them succeed. Just because they’re not people I know or am friends with doesn’t mean I shouldn’t try my hardest. The only thing that bothers me is when enemies used ranged attacks, so I throw up a wall of reflection, and my ranged teammates run in front of the wall, get downed.
Other than that, PUGs are full of people too. They might be a “Pug” to you, but they could have 4 friends/guild members in that party, and to them, you’re the pug. Now if you decide you want to be “Purposely bad,” these 4 friends/guildmates are going to consider you as dragging the team down, which you are. So to them, you’re the pug, and you’re helping give pugs a bad name.
My experiences are normally good, except sometimes I get paired with guardians that do silly stuff like put up walls of reflections against melee mobs….
Wait just a minute….

i gauge the pug to know their attitude. it’s a personal experiment for me. when i purposely die, i dont make it obvious. say if i get spiked, i don’t heal immediately, and die, that type. not purposely placing my char on swarms of mob.
i don’t do it all the time. once in a while or when i feel like it.
there is only one instance that a pug mouthed me because i started old tom in the harpies map. it doesn’t usually happen. it didn’t happen to me in the past because my previous teams know how to react fast. well this guy just told me to wait for people to type “r” before attacking. well wtf.

when its a 3 to 4 friends/guild, i behave. i know my place. i try my best.
when its all random, i sometimes do silly stuffs. but i don’t purposely drag my team down. i want to finish the map too. i want to run it smoothly. but if i want to check their attitude or play pranks, then i do my silly thing.
I still don’t get it….

I still don’t get it….
but i get you. you’re a perfectionist who doesn’t have a personal buffer for error i suppose.
look, when someone fails in a group, personalities of your team mates come out. some will offer you encouragement or check you out, some will just be forgiving and carry on, and some will just diss you out of a sudden.
me having this mindset is opening myself to the scenario that my pugs are not always perfect. that someone dies or fails because of probably unfamiliarity or inexperience or having bad day in game. i try to be forgiving.
again, i don’t purposely drag my team down or be rude or grief. i do my mini tests, IF I FEEL LIKE IT AND DO IT SUBTLELY. if they pass, i play normally and add them in my list. if they fail, i play normally in successive maps and say “ty and hf and gl.” and poof.

I see where you are coming from… When I get a wipe in the frost fractal while fighting the ice element the usual 2 things will happen. Someone will say ‘really guys? this part is super easy’ or no one will talk at all and continue to complete the stage.
The way you conduct your ‘mini test’ won’t change any outcome for the most part. From the looks of it your already in a high level FotM and to be in that level most if not all people are already above the average skill level.
Pugging in high level FotM is 99.9% smooth. I think if you feel that if your parties personalities is the problem maybe you should just learn to ignore that and carry on normally.

well this ‘mini test’ is essential for me to know if the people that i’ll add in my list are dependable. i don’t want to add people based on a perfect run because i know that there will be time that i probably ill perform badly and i don’t want to have people in my friendslist who are not patient and relaxed aka perfectionists.

i was a psych major in uni / college, and i especially loved social psych. so this is quite interesting actuallly and kind of intrigued by your “results”, if any. while i personaly don’t condone “staging” experiences, even though you don’t do it all the time or for trolling purposes. but it does show you how people react and if you work well together or if you’d like to play with them in the future. i guess in a sense, it’s picking and choosing, but it’s the same IRL to a certain extent. if there’s someone who’s consisntely AFK or just mouths people off for even harmless mistakes, you probably don’t want to play with them again. that being said, i see where you’re coming from, but can also see many people not getting this. heh. especially since most people feel invested in fractals, let alone at high levels and when they feel they have to deal with people below “par” according to their standard, they feel it’s a drag, and not worth their time.

it seems that people are kitten i bet they redmarked my ign now. Lolol.

(edited by alcopaul.2156)
Anyway, i had a funny experience that led me think that someone might’ve read this and remembered my ign. I’m in group with him and playing with my ranger. First run, he was doing ok. Then when we finished the level, i decided to run with him again. I noticed that he was dying a lot now. But i still ran with him in another level. Still he dies.
One with common sense will sense if someone does it in purpose. If you die once, its fine. you’ll learn how to avoid it. but if you die zillion times because you tank a champion boss on your light armor, it’s obvious that you’re being a f-tardo and being a baggage to a team.
You may encounter people like me or worse the trolls and kitten who tank with their light armor the champion bosses. If you do encounter someone that purposely makes the run very difficult, you can do it for the team and carry on, finish the map and just avoid the dude later on.

yeah. i also accept the consequences of this. that people might not play with me again if they feel that i am being a dead weight on the team, which is not what i do really and i dont intend to do. and the fact alone that i post my ign in this forum and posted this thread will be easier for them to red flag me or do the troll back on me instead. first impressions last and no one gets the second base based on a bad kiss on the first date. yeah. but i am glad that someone is getting this and i appreciate your words.
i see people not getting the point or taking offense on this. i don’t blame them. but do you know why people are hazed when they join a fraternity or the army? same concept, but different application. need testing to see who’s worthy to be added in my friendslist. i couldn’t haze them. but i could pose being a bad player to see their attitudes and personality, if they’re cool, they might be a good, patient and relaxed person irl.
this could happen back to me. but i certainly know who is just doing this to kitten off people or being a troll. im not that naive.

In your first post you mentioned you use WoR on a melee boss and then “people look afk then disconect”….. What? Im confused about this, so multiple people “look afk and then disc” when you WoR a melee boss??
You’re an odd man, the way you phrase some of your posts, and then others seem almost like two different people talking :O .

yea, my first post was not thought out seriously. it was just a starting post to get my post across. and i didn’t have enough sleep when i posted that, iirc.
what i meant was that “when i use WoR on a melee boss, the other guard looks afk at first and then he disconnects.” it was an anecdotal quote.
The last 2 successive posts were not me replying to myself. it was another post to update the thread. just to be clear about that lol.

I rushed the first 25 lvls in the beginning which meant I mostly progressed with the same people who knew how to play well enough. Now that I got back to the game and had to PuG to dailies, I’ve found myself in some pretty bad PuG’s.
If things don’t go well, I usually take charge and tell them what to do. It’s always nice when a bad start turns into a good run or when people actually push on despite some bad luck instead of just disconnecting. I’d say about 50% off my groups are surprisingly smooth. Just had the longest lvl 20+ daily EVER today though. Started at about 10 pm (could have been 9:45 even) and finished at around half past 12. I was planning on doing both lvl 20 and 30, but I think we broke some record there. But they were nice guys and really not that bad, mainly just bad gear, so I stuck with it and we made it afterall (eventhough it felt like I had to solo a few bosses).
I rarely ever leave unless it’s extremely bad and unphantomable hard to continue.

I still don’t get what you mean by the that. I know exactly what you SAID so let me get this straight – a large ammount of other guardians will pretend to be afk then disconect when you use WoR on a melee boss? I find that highlely unlikely since bosses are usually end or mid dungeon plus i rarely get people disconect at all.
It’s hard to believe what your stating.

“2.) i notice when i deliberately use wall of reflection when the only target is a melee boss to size up the guardian team mate that i have, he starts to look afk and disconnect from a map.”
it happened to me one time only. i wasnt very clear about it.
Typically, the first thing I ask is if someone hasn’t done the encounter before. Hopefully that clears 99% of my own questions for the capabilities of the group. I can’t say I approve of ‘testing’ the group that is helping me succeed in the game. A couple of wipes and jerky attitudes is enough to tell me it’s not the group I want to be in.
