Updating the build I posted back in late May.

From that first post to now, it’s fair to say the build is no longer experimental, premature, or speculation. It flat out works. Click on Spoiler to view the revised build and the updated post from May 22nd.
Basically only changed, Purification for Lytany, ToF for FoF

Symbolic-Zeal Burst Build

Replacing Virtues -May 22nd post
At first glance you’re going to think I’m crazy leaving Virtues for Zeal but after you land Shield#4 in a group, instantly dealing 1.7k from the wave and 1.2k additional damage per aegis hit that your allies deal, you’ll understand the build’s potential. Shield of Judgment alone can deal 5k damage to one target if he’s near your allies thanks to Shattered Aegis.

Healing
The build started off with Litany of Wrath but I swapped over to Purification. When being in a more competitive environment I needed a stronger, more consistent heal. Litany can still make for a quick damage heal in addition to your Smite Condition and ToF utilities As pointed out by Kuya.6495, Smiter’s Boon damages remains unaltered since the last nerf patch so you can use this “smite condition” as another method if burst.

Amulets
Rune of the Lynx – Mostly Mobility
Rune of the Pack – Mixture of Power with additional Crit
Rune of Surging – Elite CC with Power

Last bit of important items:

  • Be watchful of ranged classes like Mesmers and Rangers.
  • Scepter#2 -> Scept#3 -> Sword#2 -> Sword#3
  • Focus#5 + Renewed Focus = Focus Explodes dealing 3k – 8k AoE damage when being invulnerable by the elite.
  • Use Sword#2 as your Judge’s Intervention to teleport + ToF + Smite Condition, Shield#5 + F1 pull. The usual macros surrounding ToF.

Build Experiences and Division
Currently retaining Plat T1 – T2 fairly easily. The build has 1v2’d other classes before, something not as easily done on the LB meta. The build’s position on a team is highly flexible; it can be a side point rotation holder as well as a team fight bruiser.

Oddly enough, I get more frustrated with other guards who lose their 1v1’s on side points. And/or who are incapable of dishing out enough damage to down Ele/Engi/Ranger bunk comps. Though I have indeed seen Guards do exceptionally well with LB meta, symbolic build performs better than 90% of players who use that meta power build.

Pros and Cons
Counter to Condi Cheeses
An obvious merit is dealing with other condi classes. Condi Thief, Necro, Guard, etc poses no threat to this build compared to LB Power. It’s another reason why I get frustrated with most Guards when I see them lose to a condi Thief 1v1.

Symbolic Power Builds in General
Anyone who uses symbol builds (Thermite famous for it?) would know that stacked symbols + utilities + auto attacks offers incredible sustained-damages compared to power LB. When you throw out symbols or stack them, it’s not only done quickly but the damage doubles in the frame that they’re up. Longbow’s sluggish#4 is indeed a symbol utility but it’s by no means used as a “Burst” damage effect like its one-hand variants.

Cons
The build has very few weaknesses but the biggest would have to be, getting caught by another round of CC during the middle or end of a fight. I’m often forced to use CoP in place of my F3 stun breaker when getting +1’d by a Thief, for example.

The lack of additional macro combos when working around ToF.
LB is famous for it’s higher damage: Judges+Smite+LB#2+ToF instant combo. It’s down right dirty when you add in ToF’s additional macros thereafter. Symbolic may be a better point holder or even a team fight brawler but LB is generally better against ranged classes, ranged utility (if pulled off) and initial burst damages.

Let me know if anyone’s opinions of the Symbolic build has changed since the first May 22nd post of this build variant.

P.S
Please win your side-point fights Guardians :)

Did you mean to is the word macro or is it a typo?

I use the word “macro” in place of the word “combo”. When hearing it I thought it was a silly word but I suppose the usage is justified; when ToF activates it opens up opportunities for additional moves. It’s “macroing” per definition but being a 90’s SC player I guess people would probably laugh :p

Thanks for this, I am going to try running around on my Guardian with this. Just starting back after being absent for years and rarely got into sPvP until these last couple days (love the progression system they have). So I have been playing around with classes and builds and today decided to really give Guardian a go.

With that in mind, I was wondering if you have any kind of noob-friendly Guard guides or can point me towards some. Lot of the stuff I find online is either super dated or only lists the build with little to no explanation.

And for a build specific question, I saw close to this build on Metabattle but with Honor instead of Zeal (and mace over scepter). Am I correct in thinking Honor gives it more of a support/defense role while Zeal gives it more damage output? Do you have any thoughts on one or the other for learning players?

Also, what is the pro/con of going Dragon Hunter instead of Virtues?

Sorry, lots of questions, I get it if its a bit much. Thanks for whatever help you’re willing to give.

Yes, Honor and Mace are for support/defense and works well with healing power while Zeal help you with burst damage.
Scepter offer a good ranged burst option and gives you might while also inflict vulnerbility on the enemy.

DH pro/cons Virtues
-You gain traps as utilities
-Your f1 become a CC (pull)
-Your f2 become a mobility skill (leap finisher)
-Your f3 will become a frontal shield that block attacks for 3 seconds
-You sinergize better with Zeal trait line and have more aegis but not boons from virtues activation. Retaliation from virtues not needed thanks to Zeal’s Wrathful Spirits.
-You’ll gain stability and stun break (and many aegis) on cc but not on f3 activation
-You’ll cleanse 1 condition on block (1s CD) but you’ll not cleanse it from your party with f2, no passive regeneration and endurance regeneration.
-You’ll have a better overall damage modifier but not have a 15% virtues CD cut

Thanks for the help. Just wanted to say I tried this build out tonight and while I certainly wasn’t GOOD I at least felt competent. I could hold a point against a couple of attackers and won most 1v1s.

Really fun build

I was holding this build in the plat 2 & 3 divisions before I dipped for Albion Online. It’s great and False did a stellar job in the craft behind it.

Me Again. Been running this build for a couple days now and like it a lot. Wanted to get some thoughts on going LB over scepter/mace & focus.

The initial burst is great but I often felt like after it was done I may have downed my first opponent but there will still be targets running around and I have little I can do about it. If I stay in the center of things after blowing most of my CDs I tended to get splattered but disengaging and using Scepter/Focus just felt like a placeholder while I waited for my CDs to recharge.

Switching to LB I feel like I am better able to maintain pressure and when CDs are ready I can jump back in for more burst.

I thought about going Mace/Focus but not sure how I feel about no ranged attacks. But I only tried one or two matches so might have to give this more of a look. Mace seems like it would be effective what with the Mace 2 symbol and Mace 3 aegis. But seems slow.

Would love some thoughts.

Longbow it’s good only when traited, to proc ToF damage. If you trait Heavy Light you lose Hunter’s Fortification wich it’s very helpful.
With longbow you still have a blind to make use of Binding Jeopardy but you can lose your damage coming from Shattered Aegis (240 radius) and without Scepter’s immobilize you’ll have hard time making your foes stay inside symbols.

If you want to play longbow you can try the current meta build
If you seek a costant burst you can try a Greatsword build
