PvP play against DH traps
Tarnished Coast
Greets, folks. I’m just back from a layoff, and would like some advice on how to play against Dragonhunter traps in PvP.
The pull/daze/choppity-choppity seems to be too much for any of my defensive skills and traits to deal with.
Thanks!
What class(es) do you play?
I have the most trouble on my burn/consecration guardian.

all I do is dodge roll though the triggering of the trap
it still triggers while you’re evading, but won’t do anything to you
Like Reikken said you can dodge through the traps without getting most of the damage or the effects. The only traps that are going to really mess you up are Test of Faith and Maw. For ToF just don’t walk though the boundary and for Maw if you get trapped in it immediately use Renewed Focus and walk out of it. If you can find a place on your bar for any form of stability your going to be in a much better place since it will counter the DH pushing/pulling you around. Keep in mind DH is either going to have 2-3 traps or 2-3 meditations 9/10 times so they are hard press in fitting any stability into their builds so CC works excellently against them (especially immobilize). Lastly look for sigils with additional conditions that can help cover your burn stacks, because a DH is going to be removing condi’s (especially just 1 stack) far too often for you to do threatening damage.

Good advice here. Generally try to wait for a DH to blow smite condition before you immob. Most guardians will readily cleanse immob with SC, but will not blow CoP, or their f2 (unless low hp) on immob alowing you to land just about whatever you like.
As for sigils, I find that geomancy + doom (if you like using greatsword) provides great coverage for a JI + burn stack burst.
I highly recommend taking Indomitable Courage for your virtues GM trait. The stun break + stab does wonders for you, whereas burning in an aoe for your f1 procs won’t be that useful if you’re getting downed quickly.

Are you saying there’s still a chance to dodge AFTER the animation comes up? Otherwise, how do I know when to dodge?

For every trap except dragon’s maw, yes.
Procession of blades does no damage until the blades start spinning, and the ring does most of the damage when you cross it.
And even for dragaon’s maw, you can still avoid getting boxed in if you stun break really fast. like if your class has an auto stunbreak trait, you can literally just walk through it.
Otherwise, how do I know when to dodge?
if you’re there when the trap is laid, you know where it is
but even if you aren’t, you often can still guess where it is. like if a DH is sitting on a point, there are obviously traps on it
As was mentioned before, if you’ve fought enough DH and have even played one yourself, you get a feel for how large the traps are, and can usually just circle around them if the DH isn’t sitting on them. Only traps you can’t do this with are test of faith and fragments of faith.
You’re gonna have a hard time fighting any power dh as a burn guard and likely wont ever beat a good medi trapper 1v1. Especially of they run Hunter’s Fort cleans on block trait. That said you should be able to down a full trap dh as they’re often niche when it comes to 1v1.
Burn Guards biggest bursts, PF, JI & Zealot’s flame, can get blocked. Power Guard will abuse your lack of Stability with his JI+TrapCC and F1 pulls + LB#2 burst. And if his blocks and dodges fail to negate your bursts, he has 2x F2 cleanses, CoP and/or Smite Condition to counter your burn stacks.
Burn Guard is simply in a terrible position in everything other that hot joins and pve

Just walk into the edge of the trap and it will be kitten. Spam jumping seems to also help avoid a lot of game mechanics as well. Traps will be the least of your worries once you get some experience built back up. You’ll see where the trap goes down and be like gee I wonder where in the heck of all places am I not going to step if I value the life of my kitten mr scuffles and want to win this match?
Burst Burn them, and use a shield 5 to interrupt their wings of resolve (works on other class too)
OR
Burst Burn them, withdraw from fight to avoid triggering their healing trap, back down swap to range, use Purge Flame and see them bbq.
