I’m new to guardian, and excited to get to get to know a new way of playing. My question centers on the use of WoR. When running dungeons with my guildies, they are telling me to put up WoR at certain points, but I’m not seeing ranged attacks happening. Specific examples include 1) Kohler, 2) Sider Queen 3) The 3 golems right before Tazza in SE P1. 4)The golems right before the lasers in CoE.
I suppose Kohler does have a ranged attack when he spins, but thats all i can see, and they are telling me to put it up as soon as he reaches us. Queen has her webs she shoots out, but i think thats it, and the golems seem to me to be 100% meele. Am I missing something or am i getting mistaken advice?
Is aoe damage classifed as ranged? I mean in cases like the queens poison AOE, not symbols.
Also, tell me if i’m wrong, but WoR (or any blockng skill for that matter) wont work well with retaliation skills like pain reversal, as i suspect you have to take damage for the retaliation to kick in.
So cool learning the ins and out of a new profession. Thanks in advance

I don’t run Dungeons, so I’m not quite sure, but it could be they want the Wall of Reflection because of the Light combo field.

AoE damage generally isn’t classified as range, although some AoE could be projectiles(?)

Damage-prevention is indeed not awesome with Retaliation, but I don’t think Retaliation is all that useful in PvE to begin with.

“Come on, hit me!”

WoR reflects skills that are defined as projectiles.

i dont do pve but those mobs u said doesn’t look to be as projectiles attacks.

and

btw Kohler dagger storm if was made by a player within a light simbol (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Light_field ) would result in projectiles and those can be reflected.

1st April joke, when gw2 receives a “balance” update.

Spider queen – all the small mobs have projectiles, that poison adds up.

The 3 golems – have a projectile attack, and WoR can sometimes save a group from wiping if they lack damage

Golems in CoE, there are 3 golems that give projectiles (one definately has burning projectiles)

Wor is a very handy skill for guardian. Unfortunately ANet decided that some projectiles (eg, a bolt of something being thrown at you) are not classed as projectiles anymore. (Eg, Alphard in Arah, spider in TA)

Specific examples include 1) Kohler, 2) Sider Queen 3) The 3 golems right before Tazza in SE P1. 4)The golems right before the lasers in CoE.

1.) Not sure, but the anchors he throws at you just before he spins could be projectiles; I use “Retreat!” against those anchors, though.
2.) I could be mistaken but if I remember correctly the AoE poison balls could be reflected back when the game came out, but that’s no longer the case since I’ve started to do dungeon regularly.
3.) -
4.) You mean the golem with the 4 turrets around it? You can prevent it getting buffed when you reflect/block the projectiles from the turrets, and it has a nasty, hardly visible attack where it shoots 3 projectiles at someone.

edit:
4.) Ah, I know now which ones you mean. At least one has a projectile attack that turns into an ice (or something) AoE if it hits.

Welcome to the guardian class! Other explained pretty much your specific exemples, though they forgot something about Kholer: Using WoR ( feedback works better) on Kholer while he has 0 defiance stacks will shoot back the 5 pulls at him, one for each party member, and he’ll self interrupt, saving you a dodge. If he has defiant up though, you’ll still have to dodge. Spider queen aoes were made unblockable some time ago, so you can’t reflect them, but the adds does quite a lot of damage if you can’t burn them fast. I don’t use WoR myself, I just blind spam. Most golems, especially the ones in se, are projectile based. A full berserker guard can nearly one shot the SE golems with a wall.

As a general rule, unblockable attacks aren’t reflectable, most AoEs aren’t, except the one that are projectile based ( starting with a projectile and exploding on target, like lupi P2 aoes for instance). Projectiles high enough to go above your wall won’t be reflected. You’ll quickly gain knowledge on what is reflectable and what isn’t.

Good luck and have fun!

i just wanted to throw this in there. in HotW there are these ice elementals that have a very nasty ground projectile that creeps along the floor before exploding throwing your teammates.

Wall of Reflection will absolutely reflect that. you may be surprised at all the things it can reflect.

It reflects almost anything really. My favorite time to use it is against Destroyer of Worlds in SE and reflect its pet spawning projectiles to make the pets friendly. It has a ground target but can be hard to see.

Aside from big spiders in dungeons, you can reflect almost anything. Use reflects often to find your favorite moments.

1) I am unsure if WoR reflects his dagger storm.
2) Not anymore. However, WoR is still a useful skill to keep on your bar here, considering the Spider Hatchlings. Depending how you usually fight this boss, reflecting their poison projectiles could save you a lot of problems.
3) Yes, WoR is vital to surviving stacked against those 3 golems.
4) I am not sure which golems we are talking about here… if you mean the room in P2+P3 where you defend Spire’s laser from golems, then yes, the two large golems do have a projectile attack (I believe it’s the ice one). However, here I prefer to GS 5 them together, keep stability and focus 5 for blocks (if one targets me with that fatal laser beam thing), and then just damage them down quickly.

Another key boss where WoR (and also the shield summon) is very important is the Nightmare Tree in TA. The up path in particular. The turrets (or whatever their exact name is) will deal a tonne of damage if not dealt with. The easiest way to deal with it is using WoR, then shield, then WoR. Make sure to have the trait Master of Consecrations.
