A heavy plated class that successfully can wield a Shield (yes im a shield fan!) that still can deal out a fair bit of damage.

Is that the guardian?

How is the surviveability of a guardian in Explorable dungeons ?

Can you tell me what you think about Guardian in explorable modes ?

Ps. i dont HAVE to equip shield at all times. And im open for both dps and support roles.

Any opinions?

Build right (usually high toughness, mediocre vitality, and damage through high crit chance and crit damage), survivability is very high if you’re safe and never overextend yourself by charging into a group of foes alone. Of course, as a Guardian you are more than capable of leading a group. Even much of the time I’m capable of going in behind some Leeroy to save his or her butt because of Crowd Control (plenty of it) and Consecrations (think about being able to block all projectiles for your entire party for 15 seconds). Many people think that unless you’re speed running, Guardian is the best class to bring along in a dungeon exploration dungeons followed by a Mesmer.

You don’t need a shield. In fact, it’s not recommended on your damage weapon. Many Guardians choose to go with a Greatsword or Hammer and pair it with a Scepter/off-hand (close range damage with a Torch, blocking and condition cleaning with Focus, or CC and Protection with Shield)

Survaivability comes from :
Armor
High boon duration
Healing power
Aegis
an guardian with + 50 boon duration and 3000 armor 12500 hp , will survive more then an guardian with no boon duration 3000 armor and 19000 hp

If you like shields, I’d go with Mace/Shield on your guardian. Together with shouts, it’s both incredibly defensive and incredibly helpful to the rest of your group. I have amazing survivability in dungeons. I usually go with scepter/focus as my second set, but staff or GS are both also great choices for different situations.

I run full Knights Draconic, Ruby Orichalcum or Beryl Accessories depending on how hard I want to hit, use Soldier runes to enable me to keep moving in PvP if I get slowed, and Destroyer weapons. Sword/Shield works amazing, with food and Save Yourselves I get almost to 100% crit and just keep chaining auto attacks. Switch to Hammer and or Mace depending on my team comp (Hammer if I am not the only frontline meatshield, otherwise I use Mace for its #3), Scepter for defending WvW keeps, Staff for moving around the map.

Survivability comes from dodge rolling and avoiding red circles.

Most stuff at higher end PvE will kill you quickly no matter how high your toughness/vitality is.

Dodge rolling effectively means managing your endurance, so the key to survivability as a Guardian, in my opinion, is maintaining vigor, which you can get through self buffs, or importantly through critical hits (with the correct minor talent).

It may seem counter-intuitive but a high crit rate will actually help you survive better.

In a typical Altruistic Healing build in a PvE group setting, crits provide both healing and vigor for dodges (which also heal).

I recommend going for Knight’s gear (power/precision/toughness) and skip vitality gear altogether.

Consider heal-on-crit food as well if need be. Sigil can also be healing on crits, or go for Energy for even more endurance for more dodges.

tl;dr Learn to avoid damage. Dodging skillfully is the key.

Couldn’t have said it better. It’s the key in EVERY game mode.
