Depends on the situation…. But if you ask which one should be on the bar more often, I would go for retreat: swiftness’s better uptime, Group’s blocks. And if you used shouts’ runes and pure of voice, i would say it’s arguably a better condition removal for casual use. Save yourselves is better with superheavy conditions situation. I would swap to save yourselves for things that need to be spiked down quick, like a dungeon boss. If you go for shouts anyways, why not both.

Without context to a situation I would have to default to Retreat. SY comes in handy in specific situations to where the Aegis from retreat can be used in virtually any environment/build.

Retreat is simply more generic/useful. You can use it with any build.

Move faster, check.
Block and proc, check.
Heal from up to 10 boons with AH, check.

I generally just hit it on cooldown. There is no situation in which swiftness and aegis are bad, except maybe if idiots are under the effects of torment and don’t know how it works.

This is wrong, the situation where Aegis is terrible is when you are stealth skipping and the guardian is using Shattered aegis. any one who steps into an aoe or gets hit by mistake gets revealed and causes anyone else caught in the crossfire to get revealed as well. Ive seen it happen in CM. It’s incredibly rare but I wanted to show you that there is an exception.

If you are playing with a guardian using shattered aegis, you should kick him from the group.

Retreat is usually the best choice. SY is more of a specific niche skill.

In PvE group I always use Retreat for the Aegis on demand. The switfness is just a nice addition. This skill is almost always on my bar.

In PvE Solo. I also usually take Retreat, but SY is nice when you need either vigor, fury or a break stun for specific situation. But with feel my wrath, SY is less necessary. For exemple, in Fractal against the Shaman I like SY for the added vigor so I can keep the attention of the boss on me longer and dodge the arrow. When I solo wall Lupi with WoR, I pop SY for the fury, etc.

On a bunker guardian, I prefer SY, but I know that some like retreat. I find that aegis useless in group fight since too much stuff is thrown at you.

This. Shattered Aegis isn’t a particularly useful trait, especially in dungeons. I suppose I can see it working in organized WvW, but if you’re pugging or fighting dungeon bosses, it’s kind of bad.

It was the best choice while SA was broken, I think every guard I know had this exact scenario happen to them before they swapped to the Spirit weapon trait that didn’t help outside of maybe Grawl Shaman.

Guilty.

For the most part though I shelved my Guard while SA was in its bugged/disabled state. But, I was running Shattered Aegis during the few times I played Guard until SA was being repaired.

If your group if loaded with conditions and you want to save them and yourself know that you can still shout while using renewed focus .. So you hit Renewed Focus and then immediately Save yourselves so you pull all your party conditions on you but since you’re invulnerable you get no condition at all ….

Which goes better as a guardian

PVE: Retreat!
You have the chance to get 20% Damage bonus of Unscathed Contender if you are hit, the CD is lower than SY and Swiftness never hurt anyone.

PVP:
Meditation: None.
Bunker: Save Yourselves but watch out for nasty Corrupt Boon from Necros and Warriors that might have triated increased dmg for each boon on you.

WvW: I don’t play much, guess Retreat! will do the trick if you’re roaming and not using Traveler Runes. SY on a zerg vs zerg fight is an instant suicide.
