Second slot, offhand, leveling.
Scepter+Focus since they both have long range capability and the focus has a nice defensive ability in slot 5. Shield has always felt more at home with a sword or mace for me.
“Jim’ll Fix It and if he doesn’t it’s not broken”
Usually as main weapon I use hammer, but this is just me. GS is neat as well of course.
As a second weapon, I use the staff. Why? Because it allows me to run faster, because there is a staff skill that adds power, and so then you switch for GS for max damage.
Scepter / Focus is great as well, because of the condition removal of the focus.
Scepter / shield is not that useful to me, mostly because if you have scepter this is because you need range, and the shield skill is short range, if you use it to damage the enemies as well.
What about range? Note that I only do pve. And in pve it is not often I really need range, as the monsters are fast on me and I cannot run fast enough, especially backward, to keep them at range while still doing damage to them. Though perhaps against distance enemies who shoot at you, a wall of reflection and the scepter could be fun… I guess with the good utilities you can do something fine against ranged enemies with the scepter.
I think a lot of it will come down to personal preference. I am currently enjoying my run with a mace and shield, since I prefer sitting and not dying whilst I smack away at mobs. When I’m tired I switch to great sword for speed, but usually my second weapon is a staff for the perks mentioned above; speed, power and the ability to throw out a quick heal.
That being said, I really enjoy playing a support guardian, participating in lots of events. If you’re more interested in solo, fast levelling, the great sword will always rock. Although scepter + focus is really nice at long range, I personally roll with scepter + torch, getting great use of two damaging abilities. That said, it’s all personal preference :P
If you want more offensive range take the torch, otherwise focus.

Torch animations great, but pretty useless. Even autoattack cause burning, why i need 2 more burns?
Don’t remember what the two torches skills for the guardian are. Does it create a fire zone? If so, it could be good to use for a combo.
And you cannot have too many burns

To keep 100% burn uptime. Burn is one the most powerful conditions in the game. So if you can keep it up for most of the time, your target will die way faster.
On my Guardian I mainly run with hammer. But my off-set is scepter and torch. It’s an awesome combination.

The #4 is a burn aura that you can launch at foes (wich, in my opnion, is it’s best use); and #5 Is a Flame Breath cone AoE.

On leveling hammer is very weak if compare with GS or Sword+something. On leveling i need focus, because that shield #5 give me great protection against veteran mobs.

Well, if it works for you then keep using it. I leveled using Scepter and Torch and never had problems with Veterans. Sure, on low levels, GS is better than Hammer, but Torch is equal to Focus, it just depends on your playstyle.

I’m 58 with a hammer and never had issues with veterans of my level… except those who poison, poison is awful…

Just.. why hammer? GS faster, have mobility, CC and have more damage.. Hammer #4 (why do you need blowout without charge skill?) and #5 is good for pvp, but totally useless on leveling, well immobilize not very useful against mobs too..

Simply put: It’sfun. Also, the 3rd skill on it’s auto attack is a protection light combo field. It helps A LOT in several fights (33% damage reduction is always good). And #2 is a Blast Combo finisher that does a very good single target and AoE damage. Also, the blowout is more usefull in PvE as an interrupt, not to simply blow enemies away.
Also, the reasons you are giving to not use hammer as a viable weapon just works for very low levels. After 30, you realize that, yes, those skills that you judge as “useless” have it’s uses.
The mob moves a lot? Lock him in your #5 area and beat him or prevent other mobs to join the fight at melee range.
Too many mobs coming to you stacked? Use your immolize and break their formation. Even the knockback works for this purpose breaking their formations and numbers, and interrupting them as well.
