Knight’s Greatsword & Scepter/Focus with Energy/Bloodlust/5% Crit
and ascended Berserker trinkets.
I’ve got a lot of cash to spare, and i was just wondering if it would be worth investing in a Hammer for the most part, but also a Mace & Shield as well?

Out of wvwvw and dungeons I have never used a mace. A shield is worth investing for sceptor/shield or sword/shield. But if you have a lot of cash to spare, craft decent mace for cheap, buy a decent shield, save your money for vision of mists and legendaries imo
When you say investing… as far as I know players can craft the best weapons anyway (but the ugliest). And crafting is cheap. So I say craft a hammer, buy a skin you like and save again
Hammer is a preference thing, you might like it) I personally find the shield to be garbage but I still have one that I use (only for the CC in grawl fractal to protect captives). I do know people trait the shield though while running boon duration and can keep long durations of protection up on their team with it in conjunction with hold the line.
I haven’t seen a single use for the mace. I suppose it could work with traiting up symbols and liking to -feel- supporty. Its effectiveness realistically though is pretty much null.
Honestly, Guardian is tied with Warrior as the classes with most weapons worth keeping around. I’m still leveling my guardian but I intend to get him the full set (like my Warrior).
Honestly, Hammer is arguably the best “all around” Guardian weapon in the game right now. Nearly perma-protection, a 1200 range bind, ring of warding, a strong knockback and a very low cooldown blast finisher with decent damage and 600 range. The only downside is the the third hit in the AA chain is slow as balls.
As far as I’m concerned the only weapon I’m not big on is Mace. It seems to be mostly for the same purpose as Hammer (defensive builds), but worse… The Shield, on the other hand, is very useful, particularly in WvW. Good for a quick “on demand” protection and for the bubble.
I would encourage you to get at least one of every weapon on offer, even if it’s not the best quality – just so you can learn how they play and which set feels right for your game style.
I also encourage you to spend a week or two using each weapon in normal play, even if your first reaction is one of dislike. Some can grow on you when you get to learn their quirks.
For instance, I never used to think twice about the mace until I forced myself to play with it for a while and discovered it’s quite enjoyable with a damage build. I’ll think about equipping it if I’m roaming with a friend or two
A lot of guardians, myself included even have multiple weapons of the same type which have different stats and sigils, so we can mix and match depending on the situation. ( certainly not a must, but useful if you have the cash to spare )
I personally run a Hammer as my main set with a mace/focus off set. Perma protection, -33% damage, is wonderful and when you find thats not enough switching over to the mace is wonderful for AoE Block or Protection every 15 seconds while also having a symbol that grants AoE regen every 8 seconds, and lets not forget the auto attack heal’s. Focus off hand is just personal choice for me as i dont like the shield and find ray of judgment work’s better for me being a regen/blind, and Shield of Wrath has saved my butt more than a few times given its 4 seconds of blocking all damage incoming while still letting you attack. Wonderful to drop SoF right before Shield finishes for the blast finisher. Now i do still carry a greatsword/sword for those time’s i find i need something a little different but i rarely use them.
It’s weird but I like shield even if the cooldowns are a bit long. Hammer is great for support if you like waiting to get autoattack chain off, although if you have a mace that’s also a very defensive/supportive weapon. You might want to deal more damage otherwise this setup is good.
I’m not sure what you plan to do with your Guardian, but I primarily use a greatsword, using the hammer and shield in dungeons for certain situations.
I use the hammer mainly for AoE control in fights where you can’t skip trash mobs. I lead with GS 5’s pull and swap to hammer for skill 5 (ring of warding) to keep mobs in place. In general, its skills are great for AoE.
I use the shield as another method of pushing mobs together, so that my team can AoE. I use it against Lupicus in Arah in case my Wall of Reflection is on cd to block his multi shot attack in phase 3. For me, it’s generally a weapon I use when the bubble can hard counter something for teammates or if I need to position mobs.
If a weapon offers valuable abilities that I can’t get on other available weapons of that profession, I generally keep those extra weapons on standby for situations where those abilities shine.
You should buy 1 of every equippable weapon and learn all of their skills, it’s a pain but well worth it. With that in mind, once you’ve gotten the feel for how the weapons work, then focus on the 2 you use the most.
