Soft caps?
Hard to say for Power and Tougness, but Vitality always gives 10 HP for 1 vit as far as I can see. Didnt notice any diminishing returns even after 20k hp
Generally, I like to keep Toughness and Vitality pretty balanced. Toughness is for long encounters, while Vitality is good vs bursts and condition damage. As for Power, it increases pretty linearly. However, in terms of dps, Power is always better than Precision (ignoring crit procs), unless your Critical Damage is at least 220% (+70%) or something. Someone else confirm?
I guess I am thinking more Rift and WoW terms, where after a while it wasn’t worth stacking one stat and time to put more on the other.
So I guess I will just fully stack Toughness/Vitality/Power with some Healing Power thrown in then. 25/25/0/20/0 here.
On a semi related note, does anyone even know what exactly toughness does? I looked around a bit but couldnt find any details.
Toughness reduces direct damage ( not condition damage ). I believe that it scales linearly.
As far as I understand it stops direct physical damage. Someone did a test with different toughness armor and the damage received was decreased with higher Toughness.
So the more Toughness you have, the more physical damage reduction you get from warriors/theives/rangers. Toughness has no affect on Condition or Magic damage (such as fire, burn, bleed, cripple, etc).
So the way I look at it, Toughness is for warriors/theives dmg and Vitality is for dots (damage over time).
Yeah, vitality is better against condition damage or burst. Toughness is better for sustained fights. Also, healing kind of scales with toughness assuming you’re taking direct damage ( each point healed is worth more ) as opposed to just stacking vitality. You’ll probably want some kind of balance to increase your overall effective health pool.

toughness reduces damage except for condition damage. So theives and warriors can still do condition damage, and toughness still reduces “magic” damage, just not conditions. so like lightning attacks from elementalist are still reduced. What i was really looking for i guess was a formula that describes how much toughness reduces damage.
Considering most people believe that it scales linearly,
DirectDamageReceived = ( DirectDamage / Armor ) * x
Where x is a super-secret black magic Anet constant.
Has anyone experienced any soft caps on Toughness, Vitality and Power? Is there a specific number of each stat we should strive to go for before DR kicks in?
no soft caps. The only cap there is is how much stats you can allocate. All gear and traits combine can give only as much and that in itself is a cap.
