Symbol of Swiftness RNG
Its just lag from running over it to quick
also, a second application with buff does not give you +8s speed, it just pushes it up 1s
1st app: 8s
time left: 2s
2nd app: 3s
they need to fix stacking duration.

Agreed. It’s quite random sometimes. Occasionally, when stacking Retreat and Symbol, the swiftness icon will read something like, “34 sec, 33 sec, 34 sec” and keep bouncing around. It really needs looking into.
Yeah, Symbol of Swiftness has some unfortunate mechanics that are working as intended. Since it pulses swiftness, if you happen to run over the symbol between pulses, you won’t receive swiftness (hence why the application can feel random). The stacking is also less than desirable, like Charak mentioned, but it’s standard across skills that grant swiftness from a persistent area (e.g. the Mesmer’s Temporal Curtain). Run over the symbol when you already have swiftness and you’ll only get one second, to avoid people abusing these fields for absurd levels of swiftness uptime.
Sucks that it works this way, but those aspects of the skill aren’t bugs.
No, it’s still broken. Cast retreat, then symbol, and you will be left with 4 seconds of swiftness.
Like Soryuju said, it PULSES the Swiftness buff, it doesn’t apply as soon as you walk into it. If you want a guaranteed swiftness, you drop it such that when it’s cast you are directly on top of it, because it always starts the pulsing as soon as it’s laid down.

yea, that’s a good tip foofad. and never dodgeroll through it, lol. i occasionally dodgeroll cause it gives the illusion you’re covering the same ground faster, and if you dodgeroll through a swiftness symbol, you can actually miss the tick.
if i have swiftness from other sources or retreat and save yourselves, etc, always wait until swiftness is up / gone before i cast SoS again.

As an aside, the pulses do have an upside…they synergize very well with AH if you cast it into a scrum of your allies.
Also keep in mind that like most buffs, the swiftness proc only hits 5 allies per pulse. Further, since it’s a field that pulses independently from you once it’s placed, it doesn’t prioritize you over other players. So if you drop it on a clump of people around you while running around wvw, you may not get any swiftness.

Yea the skill is anet for sure. Rarely works as it should. And is pretty worthless as an escape means as a random mob walking in it will put you into combat. Let alone of one of the enemy’s you are trying to avoid steps in it so their mates can burn you down.
its not RNG. It pulses every other second. Stand in it for a while and find out for yourself.
Hit Retreat, use SoS and stand in it. You will see your swiftness duration change appropriately.
Symbol of Swiftness > Save Yourself > Retreat will give you the most out of swiftness. Just make sure the Symbol, veil, warhorn is first.

This will not work appropriately. Symbol needs to be first then Retreat. Don’t ask me why but it doesn’t increase in duration with Retreat first.

I’ve never had a problem with this. It works every time for me. The problem occurs with Mesmer wall, but not this.

Again, as an aside, this can be a good thing. Enemies pass over it when you place it down in the zerg…if it ticks on them, they become rally bait.

surely this is a bug?
