Hello. I’d like to play front line support guardian (shouts, boons, heals).
Just got my first 80. Skills and traits seems pretty obvious but I’m very confused about equipment. Myriads of armor sets, upgrade components, trinkets.. I have no idea what to get.

1. Do I need Precision \ Crit? Since heal cannot crit and high damage is not my thing.
2. Do I need Healing power or it’s a waste and it’s better just stack P\T\V?
3. What Runes shall I get? I tkink about Altruism or Monk but not sure.
4. Sigil on Weapons?

Thanks.

1. Depends but if you want to tank i suggest you get a decent amount of crit which allows you to dodge more often.
2. No, you dont need healing gear and you dont need pvt. Knights are by far the best tanking/front line gear in pve. High toughness and low health pool increases the value of incoming heals and it also does reasonable damage.
3. Soldiers, conditionremoval for the team (support) on shouts , health and toughness.
4. Energy, swap and you get one more dodge. With crit and an AH build you have 4 dodges at your disposal at any given time, with only a seconds or two delay between two of them.

There are other setups as well, read thru the guide, and if you want you can swap AH for monks focus and you can also use clerics in combination P/V/H.

0/5/30/30/5 with full knights, three shouts and soldiers are amazing frontliners and great supporters, with mace/shield/focus and hammer as standard set.

pve immortality, cleric gear + runes of melandru as weapons mace n’shield, for some champions i dont know if shield of the avenger still works fine now thats takes damage, might die in aoe 1hit (happens on WvW)

1st April joke, when gw2 receives a “balance” update.

You’re gonna get conflicting advice from people here. There’s those who advocate zerker and knights gear only, then there’s those who say cleric gear is best, and then there’s the hybrids.

I’ll tell you my personal experience so take that with a grain of salt. First with my traits I went with the standard x/x/30/20/5 with the extra points in the other 2 x’s. I started out as all out DPS (zerker gear) and while it has fun damage numbers, not so fun on survival. Then I tried out knights gear, again fun, but damage not so high and on top of that survival was no different. Then I tried a mix of knights, soldiers, valk, and zerker, as a hyrbid, and that was fun, and survival was okay, decent, but mostly just okay.

Then I tried something radical, despite all the guardian forumites at the time who constantly nay-say’ed Healing Power and Cleric gear to everyone who asked about it. I went all out Cleric gear. Damage was definately not as great, but survivability abundance! And what’s so great about that is you’ll always be the first man in and last man standing, no matter how bad the PUGs are, which is where Cleric gear really shines. However, keep in mind your damage won’t be as great. A good idea is mix Cleric gear with other types of gear to get your DPS up, but with a goal of keeping close to 1000 healing power.

I did some testing with these different gear setups on a champion I can solo and with all out zerker gear I was able to kill it in 6 minutes, however I had to stay on my skill buttons, using them almost as soon as they were off CD, especially the heals. With mixed gear, it was 7 minutes and had to use my heals occasionally. With all out cleric, its 8 minutes, but I hardly ever had to worry about using my heals.

So what I do when I’m solo or with a good group is use a mixed gear setup up with clerics, zerkers, knights, valk, and soldiers. And with PUGs or unfamilar territory, I cleric it.

The best advice given is to try things out yourself. Don’t buy exotics though. Not until you’ve decided on what you like. Buy rares only first. Once you figure out what you like, invest in the exotics.

mostly just make sure you have about 3k armor and 1k healing. Personally I like Valkyrie armor with Cleric accessories but it’s just that a personal preferance, not an absolute.

Thank you for awesome help. Since I’m kinda limited in gold\karma\tokens I guess hybrid dps \ tank \ support gear will be best choice for now.

if you aint having 5 points in virtues you aint a support guardian. Its probably the cheapest route to add value to your team. 5 points in virtues equal 1,5 utility slot on a 60s cd. In reality 1,5 extra shout.

Being a support guardian has very little to do with you having healing stats in your gear. A full berserker with the proper build is actually a supportguardian

The build you posted isnt that great support besides empower on the staff. Its more of a dps build and as such i would move 10 points from superior aria to fiery wrath.

Thanks.

1- if you go for altruistic healing with empowering might trait, you will want some crit to proc mights, if not 10%-15% are enough to have the vigor running most of the time.
2- full cleric provide more support and survivability than PVT (soldier) it stacks nicely and dodge heal is 1:1 ratio.
but if you go for altruistic healing empowering might you should get mix of knight/PVT gear because altruistic healing scaling very bad with healing power.

3- you can go 6 altruism or 4 altruism 2 monk, but if you like shouts you should go full boon duration via 2 water, 2 monk, 2 maj water for extra 40% boon duration

4- up to you, some main sigils that used
- life or perception (stacking healing power or stacking perception)
- energy (50% on weapon swap)
- stamina (refill endurance on kill)

this is post whith the build I use
