i just took a 14586 unload barrage from a thief. i’m new to guardian so i know i’m not the best, but i have 2800+ armor. is something wrong here?

Edit: I’m sorry, that was too good to pass up. What probably happened is he had a lot of might running at that particular moment, and you may have had some Vuln stacks on you. You’ve got a couple of options – one, you can punish him with Retaliation; Unload is like, what, 8 shots? That’s about 2k back in his face in WvW. Assuming you survive, he’s running low on Initiative and you should be able to follow up and at least turn the tables on him. Two, Shield is great against Unload. 5 lasts just long enough that you can block the entire volley. Focus 5 is almost as good. You’ve also got Wall of Reflection (you can be standing in the middle of it and it’ll still work) and Shelter that you can block it with, plus RF.

Long story short, you’ve got a lot of tools you can use against Unload.

yeah i know i didn’t. was in a tower and safe from death, didn’t think it could do that much.

Ahh. In that case, no, nothing’s really wrong. He’s probably a burst specced thief, and you were standing still. The difference between heavy armor with no toughness and 3000 armor is only about 20% damage reduction. Armor takes the edge off, but boons like Protection really make a difference.

i just thought it was funny really. like, how glassy do you need to be to hit that hard?

Ehhh I’m speculating here but any cookie cutter Shadow Arts/Critical Strikes/Deadly Arts stealth burst thief with D/P + P/P with plenty of Berserker gear could pull that off. Especially if you were wounded at the time.

Thieves have the tools to get away with glassy. The flip side is they melt if their target somehow survives their burst mostly intact. You’ll notice most of the solo roamer thieves will try to pick off straglers and if they dont ensure victory in the first 3-4s they take off to either get away or to reset the fight and try agian in a few seconds.

Not true at all. A person with 1800 power will retaliate an Unload for 2680 damage. With 2500 power it hits for 3100 damage.

15k? But that is good for you, put some protection up, add one or two attacks while
eating his unload, heal yourself a little up, and he is down for sure.
