Very new to gw2! Noob questions
Ditch the Staff and take Sword (or Mace) and Focus instead. That right there is a lot of extra survivability and damage.
Guardians need to rely a lot on active defenses. Look for heavy hitting attacks from enemies and use Blinds, Blocks and Dodges to avoid them. With Greatsword/Sword+Focus you should be able to solo Champions if you’re patient.
Ascalon Catacombs Story Mode is lvl 30, Exploration mode is lvl 35, and it’s a tad unusual for players under 80 to have all their gear up to snuff.
Leveling quickly in GW2 is really about exploring and taking part in whatever you find. If you see a heart, do the heart, if an event springs up, take part in that event, if there’s a vista climb to that vista. If you find a jumping puzzle do the puzzle. Story Mode actually gives the most experience outside of hunting down untouched mobs that have accumulated bonus experience. It’s also worth it to go to lower level areas you haven’t been to yet, since you’ll scale down and most of the experience will still scale up.

Some legendaries also.
Didn’t you read the window that appear before going in the dungeon? Its a level 35 dungeon. Its already hard for level 35 when they don’t know the dungeon, I can’t imagine what will it be like for level 26 lol.
For your vitality and toughness thing. The game have a lot of level scaling. Your stats will change depending where you are. You probably checked your stats outside of the dungeon where you are both downscaled to level 15 or something like that, but check it out again inside the dungeon and you will probably see that your friend stats is higher than yours since he’s gonna be level 35 and you will be level 26 inside the dungeon.

What they said.
As far as leveling. Doing hearts, dailies, and exploring is going to be your best bet. Also in WvW killing the mobs (especially) the yellow ones, with any EXP boosters you have, give a great amount of exp. Most people just skip them, and don’t bother killing them so you get a good exploration bonus. When I was leveling I went there with a friend, and each kill (with only a 10% increase from food) was getting me about 2000 exp per kill. Just be careful, as you might get run over from enemy players….
It’s the chain I beat you with until you

I get alot of exp from dungeons, also if you took up Chef or wanna buy some cheap food, for a item buff and nutrition buff you can add 20% xp as long as you keep them up.
Also be aware crafting will only get you 7 levels per craft IIRC.
