“You can get more results with a kind word and a big stick,
than you can with merely a kind word.”
I did not play much of the story in the last Beta Weekend as I wanted to save it up to play when Heart of Thorns actually comes out. Having said that, I have seen a few videos and comments that state that there are a LOT of melee hating MoBs in the new expansion and that having a viable ranged weapon will be necessary.
So, if I decide to keep playing my Guardian without the new Elite spec will I be kitten in the new content? At first I just thought I would re-roll to another profession when the new expansion comes out but I have always enjoyed playing a Guardian. I do not really relish playing a Guardian/Ranger however.
So, if we forgo using the new Elite spec will we still be viable? Is anyone else thinking of keeping their original character but just ignoring the Elite traits/spec?
Thanks.
Yes. It has been said time and time again by both the players and the developers that without using the elite specialization for guardian you will be an under powered meat shield for better players
#MASSIVESARCASM
Edit- But seriously you’ll be fine. I’ve played the Beta as a meditations guardian. Being melee has the same inconveniences that it always has. Nothing new. You’ll survive along with the rest of us greatsword swingers
Double edit- That being said you might wana grab some soldiers gear because those Mordrem archers are MEEEEEEAN

Dragon Hunter makes Guard underpowered and worse than Ranger, so not taking it is for your own good, trust me it sucks…
If you do want to go ranged, too, scepter is generally viable against most mobs – the projectiles are slow, but mobs don’t dodge.
The ironic thing is that you’ll be better off not taking Dragonhunter. It’s a piece of garbage.
And it’s boring garbage to boot.
Truely is. DH is nothing more than filler, i.e. "oh, here, you got a elite spec too ". Better off with greatsword and scepter.
I understand why people don’t like dh. I don’t understand why everyone calls it boring. Guardian is by far the most boring class, it has nothing fast or close to exciting about it. It’s a pve faceroll go to sleep class, why would you expect dh to be different. Can’t change its core
Thanks for the replies everyone.
@Silhouette – I usually have Soldier’s armor on me. I know it is not Meta (and I use Berserker weapons) but I have always liked the stats better.
@Azure – I have NO idea what you are actually talking about and doubt you actually play a Guardian, but thanks for the opinion anyways. I would agree with you if you were right, but…
Thanks.
I’ve got 3 level 80 guards across 2 accounts and it was also my first 80 3 years ago. Guardian is imo the best overall class, but it’s extremely utterly boring. What’s so hard to understand about that

Nothing at all. My reading comprehension is quite good.
I just don’t agree with your opinion on what is boring and what is not is all. However I can see how over-playing a character class across two different accounts three times might make some of the play-style a bit repetitive for you. Fortunately, I only have the one character on one account so I am not in that position.
Thanks.
As an all time Guardian player,I shall keep playing it without the specialization too.
Elite specs are alternatives, not upgrades

People don’t like DH because they don’t understand why it exists and what it’s supposed to be.

Quoted for truth.
I personally like the playstyle of the DH. It’s something completely different yet, it still feels Guardian to me. I think the Devs would call that a success but that’s just one player’s opinion. I just want DH to be on the same performance as any other regular medi build.
I like Dragonhunter because I enjoy Monster Hunter and I see the similarities. I also don’t hate on things because it’s the cool thing all the hip kids are doing.
You’ll be fine if you don’t use DH. You’ll just have to figure out what tactics work for you, the same as everyone else, including people using the elite specializations.

Dont have to play Melee with Dragon Hunter. I didnt use Bow after a while.
had fun with Dragon Hunter in melee.
Does the core classes has something new without the elit spec ?
What is the differences between a today guardian and a non-DH Guardian ? Will we have access to traps witout being DH ?

There is nothing new to guardian now and non-DH guardian at the expansion. We already got the specialisation update and there will probably give us some more balance at the expansion but nothing new to the core profession.
Hopefully, they might fill the blank spot in skill type that don’t have a healing or elite skill like an Healing and an Elite consecration, but I doudt it. It’s pure speculation on my part.

I know this may be hard to believe, but there are players who enjoy support. Can’t speak for other guardian builds though.

Probably exists to give guardians a dedicated ranged weapon. Unfortunately, instead of it offering a ranged weapon which suits guardians followed by appropriate utilities, the devs seemed to want to make it a half-hearted ranger-wannabe. I can’t truly say what something so messy was intended to be, but I don’t think you can say what it’s intended to be either. I don’t think anyone really does; I mean the devs seem to think it’s a “backline support” spec, which is pretty laughable.

People playing DH like Scepter/X will do poorly and whine that it’s bad.
Ignore them, then kill them with your Longbow.
Fashion Mage – Support in this game isn’t just healing and boons.

They are named Dragonhunter for a reason. The skills are tailored to range and cc the flying dragons in HoT. There was one event in the first beta that showed DH’s potential value, but in the main beta I could not find the same flying dragon event.

I never said that was all what support is. In fact, I basically just said that I think support guardians are fun so I’m not sure where you got that from, unless you’re implying that dragonhunters are supportive. Healing, boons, cleansing, revival, and protective barriers (like WoR or Sanctuary) are pretty much all the different kinds of support currently in the game. I don’t pretend that control (outside of supportive barriers) is support though, because it really isn’t.

This only makes the irony of traps even more rich.

ANET made a huge mistake by calling these “Elite” specs. Instead, they should have been named “Exclusive” or something else to indicate new trait lines that are only available to those who upgrade. The “elite” trait line should be an alternative to the other trait lines. It shouldn’t be stronger than any of the others.

The terminology, whatever it may be, is in place to indicate that you can only ever have one of them equipped at a time. You will always only be able to use one elite spec at a time, but not two at once. This will be more apparent when the next round of elite specs comes out.
Thanks to everyone for all the replies.
I am really not hating on the Elite spec, I just did not give it much of a go during the last Beta weekend and was a bit concerned about it being an “Elite” spec, per se.
I might give it some more tries on the next Beta. I was just really not happy with the changes to the Virtues nor the fact that the Virtues trait line (which I take in all my builds) does not appear to affect them once they are changed.
And I was a bit concerned about there being TONS of flying things in the new expansion that I might just have to sit and look at while my companions use all their ranged abilities on them if I did not have a longbow equipped.
Thanks again.

The Virtue traits were effecting the new virtues except for one trait and that only affected Spear of Justice. If they weren’t being affected, it was a bug. Also, Guardians have always had that issue. At least now we potentially have a way to deal with it if we so choose.
Scepter is a 100% viable ranged weapon for PvE. If you don’t like Dragonhunter / Longbow, use Scepter as your ranged option. I don’t see the problem. People like to act like Guardian has no ranged weapons at all, but its only PvP that leaves Scepter lacking.
