Why is hammer auto attack so slow?
Sea of Sorrows NA
The hammer is a heavier weapon, while the greatsword is great for damage output, the hammer works really well for the defensive/support type. While it is slower, it is not designed to deal crazy damage, the point is that you immobilize the enemy and bash away at him.
For example, start of with Zealots Embrace and run up to the enemy and use Ring of Warding. This traps him in the circle with you, Using Banish and Mighty Blow can deal some heavy damage, and while those are on cooldown your auto attack will deal some medium damage output, but also shield you.

My guess is because the symbol on the third strike is pretty strong. Its too slow though. Really easy to read most hammer attacks and dodge because of the big wind ups.
Contradicting my own statement, I reckon a major boost without making us OP would be to increase the auto attack swing time by 0.1 second, that would be slower than the greatsword which makes sense.

I wish it felt like the Warrior’s hammer. I think their hammer auto attack feels a lot better in action.
Yes I agree, 3rd swings on #1 is so very slow. Once people get use to dodge hammer will be pretty useless.
It doesn’t make sense for the auto attack to have a “long wind up” it takes me less time to jump and smash into the ground with the #2 ability then it does to use the third swing on the autoattack, if I can leap forward and slam my hammer down instantly with #2, my character should be strong enough to swing the hammer a little faster with the auto attack. even if they had to shorten the symbol by a few miliseconds to match the current uptime of the symbol to make it happen, we need a faster auto attack.
What’s worse is #1 and #2 don’t even match up. If you try to use #2 every time it’s up you will cut off the 3rd swing on #1. So you have to go 2 full rotations of #1 to One #2.
I don’t want to sound rude, but make sure you do the math instead of assuming the damage is higher/lower than something else.
The Hammer’s ‘1’ chain has a DPS of about 1300.
The Greatsword’s ‘1’ chain has a DPS of about 1000.
The Hammer’s may “feel” weaker due to how long it takes, but if you get into the math (not that complicated, takes like 2min), you’ll find that the Hammer is superior in that respect.
I think the ‘1’ chain should simply have a slightly shorter cast time on Symbol of Protection, but have the damage decreased proportionately. That way, the DPS would be the same, but it would be a much more practical weapon. Even 0.4s change on Symbol of Protection would be good.

DPS doesn’t mean much in a game where you can negate a huge chunk of it by dodging easily( or in this case, REALLY easily) predict attacks. I believe there is a reason to why Anet have already said hammer is getting some love.
Hammer is a tanking weapon.
Problem I have with it, is I can’t used the third skill on the chain without hitting somebody.
Which means I can’t use it where I want it at, so I can defend my ally with it.
The hammer is so slow because the developers don’t want you to use it.
