Q:
Why isn't Smite a symbol?
Nobody knows why.
It’s a secret to everyone
Classifying it as a symbol would allow it to have access to symbol related traits which might make it a bit to overpowered which in turn would cause it to be nerfed making scepter much less useful considering its all single target damage already, just my opinion. Also Mace does have symbol on its #2 skill.
Also from the wiki
“Relative to the channel and recharge time, this is the most powerful single skill in the game if all hits connect.”
Honesty is not insulting, stupidity is.

Sword and scepter are the only main hand weapons with no symbols. I suppose this is because they’re considered at “1v1 specialty” rather than any type of AoE support (staff) or damage (gs/hammer). It is the playstyle of the weapons themselves.
With that i mind, it makes sense as to why neither weapon has a symbol ability.
Random, ridiculous idea: What if each orb on Smite placed a symbol on the ground for half a second? tbh I just want to know what it’ll look like :p

I think it’s to stop it from being a light field. It’s the only reason I can think of.
- Some weapons are more about damage, some more about support, some more about defense.
- Scepter is a damage option for consistent hitting and rapid hitting to apply burning.
- Putting a light field on it would make it more supportive.
- Putting a symbol on it would make it pulse a boon, which would make it more supportive.
- If it was a symbol, it would be inconsistent to have it pulse faster than once per second. Once per second would defeat the purpose of the skill.
If smite was a symbol, it would hit at a controlled 1 sec per tick rate, and at most get 5 ticks out of it untraited.
Currently smite is good/bad, because it has such a fast cooldown time for a fairly high rate of damage….but the damage is random and on average only 8 of the 16 “strikes” will actually hit. Additionally they can only hit one target, so any more than one target in smite effect and you diminish your damage potential, cause they can distribute it between a whole.
I am fine with smite not being a symbol, as long as all 16 orb reliably hit targets (atm only giant boss targets seem to take full damage), and the scepter trait would provide piercing for smite orbs, allowing it to work better in AoE.

Just one thing… At first I thought the smite ‘thingies’ were orbs too, but I zoomed in and they are all miniature fists! Looks pretty cool in slow mo
