If you would actually need something like a tank hammer would probably be the thing to go for. Permanent protection definetly beats the meh heals from mace.
I kinda doubt that you will need a tank anyways. Would kinda go against the idea behind the combat system.

well with the recent shield changes (IF they are true as rumored) mace/shield is a good contender…with hammer or staff as an alternative
besides, as you said they always went for damage, support, controll – which I far prefer to the holy trinity…BUT we have seen a pretty healy-healer recently so…

We won’t be a tank in the traditional sense, but there will be fights in raids where we might need to tank a boss while our allies deal with something else.
Think of it also like the oozes in TA aether path.

If tanks and healers are needed (which has been implied), then I can see Nomad tank guardians and Zealot healer/dps guardians being common.
I think a lot of classes are going to be viable tanks. Daredevils and scrappers may be able to do the job too.
The difficult question is whether we will fall in a meta that heavily favors a class as the tank.
If that happens, my money’s on heralds or berserkers.

Tanks and healers haven’t been implied, but Defenses and Healing have been highlighted. It’s a fine distinction that’s important to make.

One of the best tanks around.

This thread delivers.
Tanking is subjective in a game like GW2. A skilled guardian will avoid damage all together which is why vitality and toughness is so overrated. Additionally, most healing spells also have terrible scaling with healing power making that stat more or less a luxury.
I would expect the usefulness of a guardian in raids coming from AoE aegis, reflects and the control it offers through ring and line of warding. All of these are pretty much independent of stats.
