@Limey – if you haven’t yet, check out Chris’ youtube channel for his build in action. though i assume you would have already : )) you can see how he really is able to stay on his targets. and at the same time, he also effectively uses LoS to one, avoid dmg, but two, i also feel that it is able to bait his opponents to come to him at times.

Using LoS is basically the key in outnumbered fights, regardless of the class you are using. I fought 2 fort ranik players this morning while capping their supply camp (they showed up when only the supervisor was left. The other guards respawned while i finished one of them though).

You got multiple abilities to heal and blocks to buy time to do this. Try to avoid heavy damage while you are low with using LoS. If there is no free straight line between you and the enemy a warrior can’t bulls charge you, a ranger can’t shoot etc.

thanks Chris for sharing this build
I switch from tradition 0/0/30/30/10 soldier bunker build to this in recent few days
And i found it’s quite interesting when i tried out in pvp, suprise me the survivability is much higher than AH bunker
no doubt it has extremely good survivability but it’s hard to kill mesmer or PTV elementalist, most of the cases is the side have teammate come first will win lol
i’m still waiting to try in higher level of fotm (not reach 20 yet)

I have been considering switching to this build for a while I really enjoy watching your videos Chris. I do have a question though, how does this build perform in dungeons and general PVE? I currently run a custom AH build with a Hammer and Mace/shield and have great survivability in PVE, I do decent damage and keep healing out put passively with AH and switch to mace shield for extra as needed.

What I have found though is I am not very effective in WvW, I know I am not the greatest at WvW but I see you and other guardians taking hit after hit and when I run WvW I am downed in the first 10 seconds of a fight. I ran a very different build quite a while ago and I used to be stronger in WvW but weak in PVE so I switched to my current setup. I really want to find a build that puts me back to having more survivability in WvW but does not require me to re-spend my trait points when I want to go run dungeons. I am hoping this setup will be closer to that goal.

Right now I run mostly P/T/V armor (Karma exotics from Orr) with berserker main and cleric off hands and jewelry is all Mithril Ruby.

Im not an apologist of baserker gear, i would recommend to try the karma orr with soldier stats and baserker jewels , altough im having the same problem as survivability, even with 3.4k+ armor and arround 19k health im “almost” being insta killed on 1vs1, it is how the game works, power/crit wins all.

Surviving in Guild wars is all about mobility and tactics and really doesn’t take as much from armour value or HP like so many other MMO’s.

I’m a burst Guardian and I fought a Burst thief yesterday and thanks to dodging and well timed blocks etc he didn’t lay a scratch on me and I killed him with my own burst once he was trying to run away.

I’ll also admit luck is a big player in some scenarios as well

It works well enough in dungeons because of how defensive it is; it’s almost have to TRY to get killed. I do have a tendency to just throw zerker gear on over my defensive traits when I go into PvE though…

Introduced five new stat combos on Ascended Rings and Amulets, which can be found in the usual locations for these items.

Ahhhhhhhh asjklasfa! Now to pray that one of them is Cleric’s, or at least very close. And while I’m at it…

Pure of Voice: This trait has been fixed to always properly convert conditions into boons.

There are also a few other changes for all Guardians to be excited about, such as LoW being castable on the move, the buff to OoL, and the casting speed increase to Empower.

I don’t even understand what that note meant. All I know is that I can still keep retal up 100% of the time and it still does as much damage as it did before.

And that this build just got even more powerful with the PoV fix and the introduction of Cleric’s ascended gear. Squeeee…erm, manly squee.

gotta work hard for them ascended now!D and mann. i just spent my laurels the other day.. i TOLD myself as well, i should wait. :/// actually, not in game, are all the new stats (including knight’s) added to ALL vendors and avenues of acquiring ascended gear?

unsure of what that note re: retaliation meant either. glad to hear it’s not been effected adversely. i thought retaliation only stacked in duration anyways… i didn’t even know it ever stacked in intensity.. in addition to duration?? oh well.

I’m in the same boat as you, I just spent all of my laurels on a Soldier Amulet, now I want a Cleric one, I’m sad.

Also, with the buff to PoV, Soldier Runes and Staff, I’ll be using Greatsword+Staff now. And I’ll be ditching 30% boon duration for the Soldier Runes, but I’ll gain 20% boon duration with food (+40% magic find is an irrelevant bonus here), I will obviously no longer use the HP regen food (althoug I’ll still try it).

Pros:
I gain ranged presure, retreat is no longer needed for perma swiftness (I can use other more readily available shouts now, also, for more condi removals, or even a consecration).
Extremely effective escapability and field control (buffed line of warding which was really strong before).
Compensated increased healling (by the lack of HP regen food), and additional team support+additional damage (Empower).
More Light fields, for more reliable retaliation with my sword leap.
By using Soldier Runes (that give Vit/Tough) instead of Monk&Water that give healing power, with the new ascended cleric gear, I wont be losing any healing power/toughness/vitality as I could change my current soldier amulet or rings to clerics.
My guardian just becomes that much more useful teamwise.

Cons:
I lose defense due to not having any of the offhands, basically. (protection+knockback+heal from shield and block+blind+regen+condi remove from focus)
I lose 10% boon duration.

Although, the escapability+control+heals that staff provides offsets that quite a bit.
I get the shield and focus heals, I get the shield interrupt (properly placed Line of Warding acts as an iterrupt too), the condi remove from focus I get from soldier runes. I’d lack the blocks and blind from focus and the additional protection from shield.

You cant have more than 5 sources of retal up at one time, like if you use all your virtues, SYS and SYG, and leaf finish through a light field, the leap finish wont add retal

Hey Chris,

There’s two tweaks that I would like you to comment on.

1) Switching Two-hand mastery to Watchful Spirit.

Crazy, but hear me out. 20% faster cooldown on the greatsword is awesome, yes. But with this play style, we’re pretty switching weapons constantly. Greatsword already have pretty short cooldowns. Most of these will be up by the time we switch back. Getting a 5 second retaliation (due to our build) whenever Aegis ends, seems far more useful. We’re pretty much getting a free retiliation every 30 seconds while in combat

2) Switching Defender’s flame to Retributive Armor

This one is a little bit more iffy, but I feel that increasing our crit rate from 4% to 8% (or 24% to 28%) creates a greater consistant dps increase than the situational burn that only happens during block.

Let me know what you think.

1) We have 100% retaliation uptime already.

2) 4 addition crits per 100 hits (on average) with only 160% crit damage would have a hard time outweighing 328 [+ damage from Might stacks] per block against any number of foes considering how often this build has blocks available.

Nope, no Cleric’s backpack.

Up to preference. I haven’t personally decided between +5 toughness or +5 power, but in the end it isn’t a very big difference anyway.

Things that grant us Retaliation:

1. “Save Yourselves!” (16s)
2. “Stand Your Ground!” (8s)
3. Standing in Symbol of Wrath (1s/tick)
4. Leaping out of SoW (7s)
5. Activating any virtue (7s)

These durations don’t take into account the +25% retal duration trait. You don’t even have to be in combat to test it for yourself.

Hey all and Chris!

I’ve been following this build quite a bit (currently trying to get my guard leveled so I can put it to use), and don’t know if this is the place for it, but got a couple questions…

1. From what I’ve gathered on this thread and my own understanding, stat wise, we try to max power/hp/tough with this build. Clerics gives more hp. Soldiers gives more power, but sacrifices the hp for vit (not too bad). So I was wanting to do a mix of the two. How much is appropriate and where? I can get soldiers stuff easy enough from AC runs and Karma vend in Orr. Just need to know where its best to put the more expensive Clerics equipment I get, and how much compared I need? Maybe just trinkets? Weapons too? etc…

2. With the staff buffs are you thinking about incorporating one into your build? especially as you have the two-hand mastery trait and would pay off more there with staff than 1h sword…?

3. Along those same lines, have you ever thought about double GS? This got me thinking of a different sort of build going 30/0/0/20/20 and getting Zealous Blade for more heals with GS. I know you do sacrifice some good stuff going this route (PoV, Ind Courage, and burn on block), but seems like you could add a lot more dmg for your Greatswords and still get away with it from more heals with ZB, and still have the dodge heals and Absolute Resolution heals. Thoughts on this idea? Also GS has tons of mobility so having two doesn’t seem to harm you that much and you only lose out on some extra blocks which doesn’t really pay off as much in this build anyways…

Either way I’m sold on Healing Power…Thanks for input!

If you want more vitality and power, I suggest starting with full Cleric’s and replacing small pieces with Soldier’s as you get more comfortable with the build. I wouldn’t go below 1000-1100 healing power, though.

2. With the staff buffs are you thinking about incorporating one into your build? especially as you have the two-hand mastery trait and would pay off more there with staff than 1h sword…?

It’s not something I’m considering for solo or small group roaming. However, I may consider using one more often in larger groups. I’m just not a huge fan of the staff.

3. Along those same lines, have you ever thought about double GS?

Both greatswords would share cooldowns with eachother.

random thought – so you mentioned this build may be hard to counter similar well-played “bunker” style builds as the Healway. how do you specifically deal with builds that stack retaliation? namely because both the GS and sword have fast and multi hitting attacks.

The only profession I’ve really had to deal with stacking retaliation has been—surprise—Guardians. If it’s only one target with retal, it can be outhealed. If it’s two, I can still outheal it if I play intelligently. Any more than that and it can get a little frustrating, sometimes to the point where I actually have to leave the fight.

The thing is, any build with retal that hits hard enough to hurt this build (or any other healing-based build, like D/D Cleric’s Ele) typically doesn’t have very high uptime, so it’s easy enough to just heal through the spurts of retal damage.

I’m pretty sure I’ve only had to leave a fight because of retal once.

Tweaked this build a bit for my own playstyle and I’m absolutely loving it in WvW. Sometime’s fights last a long time if I’m playing other skilled players but it’s easy to outlast people.

One build I’ve had some troubles with is Confusion stacking Mesmer’s. I find I take a lot of damage from them because of confusion. How does confusion work with retaliation? What I feel like is happening is if I have retal up and a stack of confusion on me and other people attack me, I take damage from them, then my retal hits them, and then I take damage from that as well. Can anyone confirm if thats true? Am I the only one having a bit of problems with them? Suggestions?

Retal doesn’t proc off of confusion, and confusion doesn’t proc off of retaliation. You can try to fight through 2 stacks of confusion, but just stop doing anything that doesn’t heal you if you have 3+ stacks. Do what you can to remove the stacks and LoS your enemies if you end up with a high confusion stack.

I’ve tried this build and I definitely approve of it for those that like to just survive when being hammered down by multiple opponents.

But to actually kill anyone with this build is extremely difficult… I couldn’t down a bunch of tanky built versions of other classes at all… granted I never dropped below 80% fighting 1v1 sometimes not even 2v1 but really this build feels more like a distraction build on heavy populated WvW servers and killing ppl requires tons of effort and timing your burst skills or they’re glass cannons in which case, if they’re any good, will have a pretty decent escape set up.

@ Christos de Soufre

I just wanted to add… I have been running this build since I took the time to read your first post when the thread originally opened, and I have to say. I have never had as much fun playing any Toon from any Title like I have now. Well balanced and very well thought out, and the time, and effort is greatly appreciated.

I will say I changed one thing about this and that is I am using 6 Water Runes instead of 3 and 3 because I have not had a chance to hop in to the dungeon like I have wanted, and it is working pretty well for me. I use this build, and in all honesty often find myself playing somewhat of a tanking roll (because my itchy trigger finger likes to run me into combat without asking :P) and in regards to all the posts questioning the details of such nature in dungeons, it pulls through and shines very well. You are self sufficient and a contribution to the cause no matter what way you choose to play if you are running this build.

Heads up fellow Guardians, we have a winner here !

Thanks a lot for sharing this build.

I was formerly using a meditation burst build with zerker gear in WvW and although i could drop almost any lone opponent pretty fast, I wasn’t that powerful in skirmish situations against 3 or more opponents.

So yesterday i bought the gear you use here, adjusted my build and went to do some WvW (though i practiced a bit by doing a few dungeons)… it was awesome! I felt like i was untouchable by the opponents and i had no fear charging in 1v3. I even managed to fight 1v4, finishing 2 of my opponents (they were upscaled, the 2 others weren’t) before an additional player joined them and forced me away. Though by that fight I had managed to stack up my sigil of life to full stacks so i had a whopping 1550 Healing Power in that fight (I don’t have ascended stuff except the rings which happen to be lunaria and solaria, my backpack is exotic soldier with sapphire orb). Even though my damage was low, my opponents would eventually go down by my constant autoattacking and retaliation damage.

I was using Save Yourself, Hold the Line and decided to swap Stand Your Ground for Retreat! What’s your take on getting retreat to the build? I found myself lagging behind my 2 mates every time i tried to switch it away. So I left it in and stomped using the focus 5.

Anyways, thanks a lot for buffing up my WvW performance!

I know (from experience trying to follow him) that Chris tends to swap in Retreat! a lot when he’s traveling around, though I don’t believe it’s his preferred shout in combat. Myself, I just tend to swap in staff for my GS a lot while moving around, though that has gotten me caught in battle a few times with staff + sword/focus which isn’t very good in small group combat (though I did maul the hell out of some poor thief with it the other day).

I’ll say this…Chris is the only guardian track star I know. He’ll make you reconsider the idea of guardians being the second slowest class after mesmers…

i agree that Stand Your Ground is more useful in group situations. Retreat i slot as well just for traveling. Though i will admit, if you’re in a 1v1 or 1v2 where you can see things clearly, an aegis CAN save you. but many opponents will have multi hitting attacks. so it’s a matter of being abel to switch utilities before engaging if you can afford to.

using focus #5 is a good alternative. using F3 with indomitable couraeg is my preferred “guarantee” stomp move.

I use your build in PvE with some minor adjustments and I have a couple questions:

I either travel a lot, or don’t get many kills with S+F and my Sigil of Life doesn’t stack very high before it’s reset. I think that some “permanent stat” or “on kill” sigil would be a better choice (I can’t use “on swap” or “on crit” because of ICD conflict with Sigil of Energy).

When I calculated numbers for Virtue of Resolve, I noticed some interesting values. With my 1152 healing, VoR passive heals 194 health per second. When activated, it heals for 2500 and gives regen 277 HPS for 8s. That’s 4716 health total, on 46s cooldown. But, during the same 46 seconds, passive VoR heals for 8924 health total. Would it be better to leave VoR always on, unless you need heal right now, or remove conditions, or use Renewed Focus shortly after?

If your’re not having fun with a stacking sigil, I suggest Sigil of Force for PvE.

The only time I ever really pop VoR is if it’s my only chance to survive until my next cooldown is up, whether it be Shelter, my elite, or even just a dodge roll.

Just wanted to comment on the Legendary weaps issue since I was a bit bothered by it as well.. if you really want to grab them without using transmutation, you could try going with all Ascended Clerics trinkets and the Asc Soldier back. All else held constant with your current setup (unless my math is wrong), you’d be trading 19 power and 80 health for 27 healing. It actually takes the stats back into a more “Cleric” direction, so it’s something to consider.

I’ve heard/seen reports of people successfully transmuting their legendaries since the last patch wherein they keep their purple text and no longer have that pesky “of the X” sigil suffix, so I’m pretty secure in my decision to transmute my Sunrise when I get it.

Does this build work well in regular dungeons and fractals ? :o

It does, but I usually throw zerker gear on on top of the Healway trait setup. Just speeds it up considering it’s easy enough to dodge bad stuff in PvE.

Update on my personal setup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8zwI47aESU

So for fractals you use all zerker gear (just gear or weapons and trinkets also?) if only zerkers gear then what runes do you use with them?

Chris,

I used your build in sPvP. I was helping a friend test her mesmer PvP skills when a Warrior came into our server and wanted to 1v1 us. Needless to say, he got pretty upset that he couldn’t kill me – not even close.

In WvW, I encountered another Guardian who seemed to be using a similar build with Hammer + Mace/Focus. It was an incredibly tedious fight with nether one of us getting anywhere fast. After about 10 minutes, two Thieves from his server found us and I found myself on a slow decent to defeat. I almost killed one of the Thieves, but as you mentioned, Permastealth classes are a pain.

Thanks again for all your videos and effort! Cheers!

Zerker armor, earrings, amulet, and weapons. My soldier’s rings and back item stay on. The armor is 6/6 Superior Rune of the Wurm because I can’t afford Scholar right now.

Great man thank you for the quick response. I just have another quick question, would a hammer setup also work with this build (I’m very new to guardian?)

I actually still sport this build regardless of what I’m doing in all honesty. I find it works regardless of what tools I’m using let alone region in the game. It does, at times, find me caught with my armor around my ankles which can lead to a rather quick death. Other times, or most of the time, it finds me holding the line until help arrives.

I run:
Clerics accessories + mad kings back (need to replace that really)
All clerics armor & weapons (greatsword, focus, and sword)
PvP Hammer, Staff, and Scepter – kept in bag but used daily
Shield of the Wing

Power: 1,566
Precision: 959
Toughness: 1,653
Vitality: 1,241
Condition damage: 38
Boon Duration: 45%
Crit Damage: 13%
Attack: 2,507
Crit Chance: 6%
Armor: 2,864
Health: 14,055 (seems low)
Condition Damage: 0
Healing Power: 1,365 (seems low to some of yours)
Virtue Recharge: 30%

I really only do WvWvW to be honest. I don’t run many instances let along the fractal dungeons. I’ve done a few and this build still works fine. I think it is great that this game doesn’t have a damage meter because it lets me play the way I want to. As long as people live and complete the task I feel we all did good.

Roaming solo I will typically run the greatsword, sword and focus because I can manage 1 or 2 v 1 situations fine. Also all the JP’s out there gets this weapons package. On the other hand when I’m with a small group I switch to staff, scepter, and shield. It allows us to move around quicker and makes me support. Wall of reflection, hold the line, etc. I can push or hold while others do the dps. Supply camp hit and run, I find this to work the best. I also have a hammer from my AH build days but compared to the other weapons I find it too slow.

You know the build is really working when you get a message from the opposing force saying good fight, or what is your build? Best one so far was when I ran into a Thief who couldn’t bring me down, got tired, and left. He later messaged me to say that didn’t go has he planned, saw he couldn’t beat me, and left. Lol.

Anyway, this is a pretty solid build. Works just about anywhere that I’ve tried it with all weapon packages. I have not found a fault with it other than when I’m using the wrong weapon for the situation. That is my error, not the builds.

Well I’m wondering mostly because I want to start grinding out arah runs and idk if zerkers gear is best for groups or will clerics provide enough extra dps for smoother runs.

I’m doing arah path 3 using this build. It works fairly well but you certainly need some time to finish enemies when comparing to more offensive builds. The times i can really shine is when tanking Lupi/1. boss and when providing boons/heals to my team. (Well i’m not really tanking the 1. boss as he instadowns but with the amount of blocks and cleanses available i can distract him any amount of time)
