WvW roaming hardcounters
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsby6rYkxS8
I’ve played DH for a while now and have had some really hard fights that I felt was impossible or highly difficult to win against.
But before I post on what I felt were hardcounter matchups to me, I wanted to know from other more experienced roamers on what are the real hardcounters to DH currently.
I play power medi trapper. Just want to know your thoughts on what classes and builds hardcounters this. So I can know if it is because I’m not skilled enough or that my build is just at a bad disadvantage to win against a particular class and build.
Thanks!
I think by roaming you are talking about solo or small group in WvW. I will tell you as a mainly solo roamer (thief) that DH is one of the unique classes that does not have a real “hard” counter.
However, keep in mind that its not the class that makes the player, it’s the player that makes the class. What a large majority of the WvW player base does not realize is that you will encounter classes that normally wouldn’t kill your build but end up killing you instead because the player behind it is flat out better than you. People dont want to admit that but it’s just the cold hard fact
I would suggest that you experiment with builds, ideas and things that NOT everyone else does. Take a build that you like and improve on it. This does cost gold so be prepared to spend some cash. Lets put it this way, I have spent hundreds of gold on “experimental” builds.
For example I’ll drop 40 gold on a sigil of concentration just to test its validity in my build. If it works, I stick with it. Also, try the cheap versions of the build first with exotic gear so you can salvage expensive things with black lions salvage kits.
For example if you want a condition build get a set of dire gear first in exotics from the TP and craft the rest before investing in a set of trailblazer. They perform nearly the same.
Let me give you one last example, my build is NOT meta at all. As a matter of fact I can’t find my thief build on any forum. It is highly effective and because I have a very high win to death ratio I am beginning to see more and more thieves taking a similar role in WvW.
Lastly, just take a build that you like, get out there and spend time getting stomped on. Realize your mistakes, make corrections and go get stomped again. You will spend many hours dying. Push the build to the limits, take on entire groups of players 1v5 to see your limitations. I do it all the time to push my limitations and see what build types I can take on and how many.
This is kinda long but hope it helps. If not shrug
Only thing that hard counters me is ele. I just cant kill skilled eles with fresh air build. Too much reflection and everything.
Darn ele’s d/d can beat Dh variants if they have decent stability and some condition in there builds. However fight a good power zerker speciation with Rune of the defender and that’s a giant problem. Warrior’s if not heavily condi pressure and boon stripped will kill DHs easily if you 1v1 them. There tough trait line base healing and f1 burst heal is not a boon, but a special skill trait so it can’t be corrupted or stolen. That really needs to be adjust in wvw!
My favorite roaming weapon set is hammer mace focus. As syphon said pick one build weapon and make it work to ur liking. I never see anyone roam with my weapon set or sigils and i must say for me it works very well against everyone but i will lose to experienced players and classes that can outlast me and kite. I disagree with syphon on this aspect, you will be limited to what the class mechanichs can achieve. For ex the best chrono will win against the best DH due to cds burn etc.

Try fighting a warrior with Hammer + sw/sh, you can’t lose. Amount of pressure you give negates their pressure. They often run away and you just don’t let them run cause of 2 guard teleports.
Thank you Ragnarox I will need to try it. Thank you

Experienced guard/DH roamer here. I probably run a build similar to yours so I think I can weigh in:
DH has no hardcounters in my opinion.
Buuuut there are some softcounters to DH: Staff & Sw/w shout trooper druid. Condi chrono running chaos and illusions, good warr running might signet, boon corrupt condi necro, staff acro thief, power rev.
Even against any of these classes/builds, I find that they can be beaten by either chsnging a utility or changing how you play:
Shout trooper druid: use Sc/F instead of longbow. Focus on dps, use bursts when they’re at around half hp and not on staff. Stay as close as possible to them; if you constantly match your gap closers to their gap openers, you will win.
Condi Chrono: use hunter’s fortification for extra condi removal. Consider using Sc/F or switching CoP in for JI. It’s a winnable duel, more difficult when roaming.
Might signet warr: keep dps up throughout entire fight. Kite them hard if you see might signet + berserk mode pop. Always save one stunbreaker (if you get headbutted, you’re finished). Watch for endure pain stance, burst them as soon as it ends.
Boon corrupt necro: run CoP instead of JI. They aren’t very fast so staying within 300 to 700 units from them at all times isn’t too difficult (no need for JI).
Staff acro thief: always run towards them when they’re dodge spamming (prevents their dps through bounding dodger). Watch and listen for staff 5; dodge or block it every time. Watch for their steal. After they use steal is generally a good time to use heals (f2, heal trap). Keep dps up the whole fight, and burst after you see multiple dodges in a row.
Power rev: watch very closely for their glint heal. Only use ToF and symbols when you know they’re not going to use glint heal – like if they just swapped to assassin legend, or just used glint heal or are near full hp. Longbow works pretty well against them (forces them to close the gap). When they switch to sword/x, also switch to sword/sh or sw/f and play defensively (dodge their sword 2, throw up protection and blocks for their sword 3, burst them right as they come out of sword 3).
I have fought just about everything out there while roaming, dueling, 1v1 or near 1v1 situations multiple times and am pretty confident that we currently aren’t hardcountered. We have the tools to beat or stalemate just about any class/build given that skill level is =.
I would have assumed a boon corrupt reaper, power or condi.
