good weapons for my guardian build
Without more information, I would say Berserker weapons on the grounds that a sack of meat doing no damage is less useful than a sack of slightly less meaty meat that does some decent damage.
Btw, the “more information” mostly consists of what kind of content you plan on doing, though in general, “tanking” refers to getting and holding aggro, and being able to weather it’s consequences.
well not sure what I’m gonna do with my trinkets yet 100% I’m working on weapons right now cause i didn’t even have level 80 ones so yeah i was thinking if most of my stuff is power toughness vit or healing power. at leave my weapons should have some power precision and crit to makes some hits. and my armor i’m gonna so power toughness vitality. my 7,8,9 are all shouts signet or judgment save yourself and hold the line
Personally, I think hammer is the tankiest weapon and is more flexible for a number of builds but since you mention you already have narrowed down to clerics and traits, then Mace would probably best suit you.
Whatever you do, Don’t go crazy trying to stack your toughness to the highest values. It’s effectiveness lessens as you continue to increase it. I would aim for a minimum of 2800 armor if you want to attempt to tank.
yeah i dont like hammers though i use great sword or staff and want to get a mace and shield since it would work boss for me but what you think on shield power toughness vitality or power precisions and crit damage
is it possible in this game to “tank”? I feel like I still have to switch to ranged from time to time to recuperate from heavy boss hits…..
It’s very difficult, if nigh impossible, to just facetank a boss. you need the support of your party and a lot of skilled dodges to stay in the melee. don’t feel like backing out to range is a bad thing, even if it’s just to recoup from a few hard hits. as long as you stay alive and do damage, you’re doing just fine.
Mace is by far the tankiest weapon and it’s great against mobs, but feels very awkward in WvW where the enemies move around a lot more and the swings are quite slow. In the offhand the focus is great for personal protection and shield for helping allies or punting enemy players off cliffs.
While almost all guardian weapons are situational (e.g. 1h sword is great against single opponents), the greatsword is the master-of-all-trades.
You can tank, but to tank you need to 1. keep aggro 2. somehow survive (avoid/negate/heal damage).
Without keeping aggro you cannot tank … in GW2 aggro appears in most cases to be very simplistic based on who hits first and who does the most damage. In order to tank you therefore must have good sustained damage and should ideally hit before the more mobile burst damage classes / range damage.
I think I’m at the opposite end of the spectrum to you having got a lot of sustained damage on my guardian I am now looking to move to a Power/Toughness/Vitality gs, with the setup you describe I would say you might do better with Power/ Precision / Crit possibly even adding a +%dam / +%critchance / +power / +precision sigil to it.
Mace is by far the tankiest weapon and it’s great against mobs.
Mace is tanky but if I build to ‘face tank’ stuff I’m gonna run Hammer and +Boon Duration. 100% up time on Protection lets me take hits more efficiently than the heals, regen and block from mace, at least it feels more efficient. You can build for full Protection with Mace/Shield, Shouts and 70% boon duration but it’s a full build with consumables to get it online.
This site has a neat ‘Effective Power’ and ‘Effective Health’ calculation, mess around with it to optimize your setup. The value is only relevant to each individual weapon and class so don’t use it as a dps comparison.

I do feel like CC abilities or wall of reflection are the kind of abilities that makes us guardians shine….it’s what mitigates a lot of the damage to my squishy teammates when we party together…. I have difficulty maintaining aggro otherwise.
In this case not to get out of topic, hammer and staff are my weapons of choice so I can keep my area denying skills up more often. GS/Hammer is also nice cuz u can do 5 GS then 5 hammer immediately. But you risk not having range. For boss fights scepter/focus is a must for me. It gives you that personal escape that you need (3 blocks, and a blind), as well as maintaining damage output while ranged. Also as a bonus I added superior sigil of blood, just to get some extra heals while attacking.

Your damage will be terrible, so staff as an alternative for support would be recommended. The hammer is a great all around defensive weapon, but the mace+shield is quite powerful and should give you an edge with aggro. IMO healing power is not that great and has terrible skill coefficients. I assume you are going to run an AH build, but even if you aren’t you should seriously consider upping your crit chances. Higher crit chances are incredibly important for sigil/food procs and can substantially increase your survivability.
thanks guys for all the advice yeah i plan on gettin ga few different weapons for the situation that pops up. see i was looking more for stats like power toughness vitally vs power precession crit. but you all gave me some great ideads so thank you very much
GS, hammer,sword = berzerker
mace, shield, staff = cleric
scepter,focus = knight or berzerker
torch= rampager/carrion/rabid etc…
but they really depend on your build
