help with a build or two please!
Any help?
I jumped into wvw last night with a set of knights draconic armor and great sword/staff. And have my points spread out 0/5/30/30/5. Having a hard time of it, not used to getting in their and not being able to disengage like I can with swoop etc.
Was looking at maybe clerics armor with a great sword and sword/shield?
Mainly solo WvW or with an engineer friend.
hello Bailey! 0/5/30/30/5 is a good starting ground and very functional build for WvW! i would suggest running Monk’s Focus + Meditations when solo, and then AH + Shouts or sth in a group setting.
what are the detailed breakdown of your traits / armor stats? i used to go full Knight’s as well.. though the more i played, the more i tried mixing and matching to balance out good damage as well as defense/survivability. i liked mixing knight’s with solder or valkyrie for some more vit. or berserkers if i wanted more damage.
what are you specifically having a hard time with though? being able to disengage i will say can be quite hard if you’re being focused.
Cleric’s can work if you’re planning to outlast your opponents. so you will get much added lnoger lasting cause of the healing power, you’ll definitely hit a lot less hard. so make sure you get bloodlust stacks or sth to make up for it. : )) and also, this is just a personal threshold, but i won’t specifically invest into healing power if i don’t get over 1k.
in general, WvW is a lot of about not losing focus, while not getting tunnel vision either. always be aware of your surroundnigs. if you’re using GS, the leap can help with escaping, as well as line of warding on the staff. swiftness symbol definitely helps as well. make sure you have condition cleansing, as well as some stun breaks too. stability is great to have as well!

Thank you Akamon, the help is appreciated!
I have 30 Points in Valor with the traits set to I/VI/XII
And then 30 in Honor with the traits set to II/VI/IX
With 5 points in both Radiance and Virtues
My Armor is All knights with my jewelry being berserker jewels/gems. I am using both a knights great sword and staff, the staff has sigil of air and the sword has bloodlust (steal health on crit). Went with a couple cheap runes to make sure I liked the weapon play style. I also picked up a scepter and a focus.
I have been having a hard time getting kills in on targets that should be fairly simple (I think) was fighting a dd elementalist last night and got my trashed handed to me, in the past they have not been a problem although on the guardian I felt like nothing more than a speed bump.
Also having a hard time keeping up with runners to get the kill as well as being able to disengage. If things go bad and the engineer I run with tells me to run I really have not been able to make it out alive. I have been mainly playing a ranger using faux’s RRR build found here http://tinyurl.com/n33ljp2 although I use a great sword and shortbow with the build and have amazing surviability and can take 2 or 3 people on solo. My secondary class is a thief (I am a lousy thief player)
While I wont say no to mass taging in WvW I am looking for a build that will allow me to take on one or two players solo and when I am with the engineer to be able to help keep them up or at least be able to pick them up after words if things go wrong.
Also wndering what of our slot skills are broken, I tried the signet that revies a fallen ally with no luck. Tried it on an ally that was had not been stmomped and was bandaging them selfs with no luck. And then I tried it on an ally who had been stomped again with no luck.
Just having a brutal time of it with the guardian in WvW and any help is appricated.
Slot Skills I am using are
Heal: Shelter
Slot: Judges Intervention/Stand Your Ground/Save Yourselves
you’re most welcome : ))
here’s a quick link to my standard, safe-bet WvW build
i’m using 0/5/30/30/5/ here as well along with similar traits. you can take a look at my stats and compare them to yours. i went for a balance of damage, crit chance / dmg %, as well as toughness and health. these are all sitting at good points for me. of course, you can also use a perception or bloodlust sigil to stack precision or power, depending on your likeing (remember these stacks remove on down / defeat or travel from map to map). but of course, stats aren’t everything and really comes down to how you play. i’ve since then gone on to more aggressive/offensive focused builds, but i know i can always come back to this one and perform well.
if you like the Sigil of Blood (i’m asuming for life steal), you could go more that route and focus the rest of your build on that as well. though i’m not too versed in that area.
one key thing is, i’ve switched up your utilities to include at least one more meditation since you’ve picked up Monk’s Focus so your meditations heal you. so you can get an extra heal this way. you might wanna go with contemplation of purity instead as well since it’s also a stun break and converts multiple conditions to boons. you just wanna make sure you time it and don’t use it too early if you’re expecting a lot of conditions.
in addition, you can maybe pick up Resolute Healer if you’re running in a group. well the trait that generates a shield of absorption whenever you’re reviving. it’s useful to save downed allies : ))
i know it’s not the easiest trying to catch up with fleeing enemies or disengaging before it’s too late. but it’s definitely doable with the Guardian. check out Stunningstyles’ DPS Guardian. about halfway through, he escapes from a group of like 5+. even just using GS and Staff, you’re able to be pretty mobile. use leap of faith (GS3) to catch up to someone or jump away. use line of warding (staff5) to stop people from running, or lay it down in front of you as you’re running away to stop people. use GS5 in addition to Judge’s Intervention (JI) to catch up to someone and drag them back. use GS3 with JI to cover even more ground!
though i do want to add, staff definitely excels in group fights more. i wouldn’t be the most ecstatic to be caught in a 1v1 or 1v2 situation with a staff. it’s probably doable, but i feel there are better options. : )) hammer for e.g. i love. mace gives good survivability. sword is always a popular favorite as well. scepter has good 1v1 dmg like the sword and argubly even more dmg too.
i will say though in the very beginning, i would get severe tunnel vision so even if i was winning a 1v1 fight, i wouldn’t see other people coming and then they’d wipe the floor with me. so even ebfore knowing HOW to disengage, etc, i’d say it’s more important to know WHEN to engage and disengage. and then we can work on how. you can also use other abilities like Shelter heal which blocks for 2s-ish. then your elite Renewed Focus allows for a couple of seconds of invulnerability as well. which refreshes your virtues for more blind, blocks, protection, etc… and if you happen to be a Norn, the Snow Leopard elite skill actualyl does wonders in terms of catching up with people, or running away. just make sure you stun break or cleanse all conditions first!
i’ve never been a signet player, but tbh, i don’t know too many Guardians that actively keep the signet of mercy on their bar. i’ve heard it’s kind of buggy for the Guardian. i’ll mayeb go try to test this out and see how it works. ://
re: the dd ele, did you know what took you down? was it too fast? you couldn’t put a dent in them? or… each time i ran into a good foe or someone who just destroyed me, i’ll try to figure out their build and go and learn their class (only i really only play the Guardian). i try to look up stuff and learn counters so that it won’t happen again.
there are argubly better builds out there for 1v1’s. but that’s not to say the build we’re talking about here isn’t a strong 1v1 or even 1vN build. main thing is keep practicing, learn from your mistakes, and have fun!! feel free to ask me more questions if you need more help.
hopefully more veteran and more experienced Guards can chip in as well!

Hello,
With the DD ele, the main issues came down to my not being able to keep up with them. When I did manage to hurt them they would just ride the lightning away and come back at me with full health. My cooldowns also seemed to be taking for ever. My passive health regen and active healing did not seem up to par.
When I found the ele again later with my ranger it was no match at all, was able to answer a text and relax during the fight.
Your other option is to use pretty much the same build as Akamon has stated, but incorporate +healing into the jewel set so you’re at bout +750’ish healing.
That will give you +900’ish health on dodge roll for you and your engi friend…. then also add in Battle presence instead of Aegis Heals and drop the 2h master down to tier 2.
Then maybe go w/ GS + S/F… That’s all the mobility we can get really… And to boot, you’ll have 4 blinds… woot woot!
Between the dodge rolls, extra shield from focus, 4 blinds, and 3 leaps/ports… that’s a ton of mobility and support for your engi…. that’s my go to build for roaming by myself or w/ a buddy.

i like those changes, Amins.
@Bailey, you should definitely check out Amins youtube WvW Guardian videos as well. i learned a ton from ‘em. : )) and they’re fun to watch!
just a small reminder, for your ports (sword 2 and JI), you need targets for them to work. but you can easily cover a ton of ground this way. i think when you’re able to keep up with the ele’s who tend to ride away, keep up the pressure, they’ll fall to your blade in due time.

Thank you gang I am going to check out the builds and the videos. Thank you for taking the time to help me figure out the class in wvw and make the transition from my ranger and thief…iot has been brutal as the guardian seems so slow by comparison in movement speed and attack speed. Although I am liking the class and feel I will become more useful as I learn the ins and outs and find a build that dosent make me want to curl up with a bottle and just drink.
