I have a level 80 guardian and a level 72 revenant,

on the guardian(dh) forums its all doom and gloom, like the guardian is totally worthless, and you shouldn’t play the class, instead roll a revenant.

on the revenant forums its all doom and gloom about glitches and nerfs, with some asking for a new ranged weapon like the guardians longbow.

so which is it, is guardian hopeless, or is it strong enough to make revenants jealous of something ?

Personally I like the lazier playstyle of the guardian, I only do PvE, so that may be why I’m not seeing it, but right now the classes seem to be relatively balanced if both sides complain heh.

What content are you planning on playing? Unless you’re stepping into a raid it’s pointless to compare the 2 pve-wise. The rest of the content is so faceroll you can do w/e.

If you’re actually serious… It’s the forum’s bad word filter.

Just play what you enjoy. For general pve there’s rly no point worrying about how much the guardian underperforms on some game modes.

Rev is the superior class for farming and gathering. Their movement speed will let you get across a map ridiculously fast. Rev cant tag mobs as well as Guard, but this isnt the Orr days and thats not even important anymore.

I like this arguing due I have twelve 80s and farming is my main source of wealth, so I’ve tested this extensively with all of the classes and specializations. And imo you’re wrong:

• The two key points in gathering are mobility and avoiding combat. Mobility is crucial to reach locations, but avoiding combat is even more important because combat makes you slower and prevents you to use waypoints (and even from replacing the tools if you don’t have limitless ones in each character).

• In mobility Herald has a good base due Facet of Elements perma swiftness and Impossible Odds limited quickness. Both are better than having to rely on traveler runes or being forced to use the inconsistent acces to swiftness from the Guardian/DH traits and skills.

• Then as gap closers, with Rev/Herald you have Phase Trasversal and Frigid Blitz (axe #4), plus Surge of the Mist (Staff #5); Guardians/DH have Leap of Faith (greatsword #3), Flasing Blade (sword #2) and Judge’s Intervention. Of all those gap closes I would argue that Leap of Faith is the best one due its cooldown paired with the fact that doesn’t requiere a target and therefore prevents you from engaging in combat.

• Finally, preventing you from entering in combat: Guardian/DH is leagues ahead of Rev/Herald. Rev’s staff blocks can engage you in combat. Shield #5 roots you in the floor. Sword #4 is the only reliable source of blocks while moving from revs, but Revs can’t block while gathering. Guardian/DH can: aegis is a reliable and handy source of blocks which is available at large disposal to this class, and outside stealth is the second best way to prevent you from being engaged in dilatory fights.

Revenants has an extra trick: Impossible Odds to speed up the gathering animation itself. But using IO means changing from Glint to Shiro, which means no more perma-swiftness from FoE in at least 10 seconds, so IO is unwelcomed except for gathering ore in rich veins.

Overall, even having Heralds a better base mobility thanx to FoE instead of being forced to use traveller runes, their gap closers aren’t as handy as Leap of Faith and their blocks can’t compete against the ones from Guardian/DH. And due not being engaged in combat is far more important for consistent gathering that mining rich veins a little faster, Guadians/Demon Hunters are better at this task. In fact, I think that only Thieves exced uss in this feature.

tbh both aren’t in a good place atm for end game raids. After this “big” patch i’d say guardian and rev were the 2 classes completely neglected. Now don’t get me wrong you can fractal and raid with both of these classes but their condi options are outclassed by engi/necro/warrior/etc and their power options are outclassed by other classes (rev was high dps but with sword nerf and all the bugs in their rotations it seems they have fallen from grace). So basically you will be fighting a uphill battle for a spot in a raid because another class can do everything you do better.

Guardian changes this patch haven’t affected us any in PvE so they aren’t worth mentioning. Nothing has changed here.

Rev changes are:
0 buffs to offhand sword
0 buffs to staff
0 buffs to Jalis/Retribution
0 buffs to Ventari
0 buffs/compensation whatsoever for deleting hammer from the game (for spvp and heavy nerfed in pve)
No rework whatsoever to Mallyx and corruption line,
No rework to shiro healing or fixed PT (which should also become insta cast due to slapped cd)
Base rev still without 25% movement trait (or swiftness) despite the fact we have a slot in adept devastation for it

So basically with Rev you WILL be taking shiro/glint and atm it’s at it’s worst. There’s basically no build diversity on rev atm and I honestly can’t believe Jalis/Ventari weren’t changed in the slightest. Main problem here is Glint does jalis/ventari jobs better and shiro makes you auto attack faster which when in sword/shield (which you will camp) you just have to auto attack for dps. Other skills are all dps losses but maybe precision strike is now a dps gain since patch but the projectile straight up misses and does no dmg 80% of the time or 100% of the time if moving (think guardian scepter at a distance).

Idk what you should play. I’m kind of glad I made a necro before HoT because that class is rocking right now. I do strongly believe you should play what you find more fun though so try them both out. I still vote for guardian because it was my main since launch.

This the ONLY correct answer. I want a GS on my rev buy I cant so I seem to be back on my guardian

As someone who had mained d/d ele, DH (medi also) and Revenant power, i can now say that after the recent nerfs DH wins easily. At WVW roaming that is.

to add to my comment before….after skimming the forums and asking some guildies (former guildies now) about state of revenant…people are actually leaving the game for some time until the class gets sorted. They are calling this the worst “balance” to date and stating the fact that dps got nerf, all problems got ignored, more problems were made and 0 condi clear was added. Idk if it’s actually “that bad” but it seems to be the view of a good few Rev players. I’d suggest guardian even more now but you have to use DH in your build if you want higher dps.

IMO, if you are going to ignore raids for some time, you can play guardian no problem, he is a lot of fun. The game is in a bad state currently. It is not just revenant or guardian….we just have to wait until ArenaNet sorts things out. Lack of communication makes the waiting hard however.

Rev is far far superior in endgame pve it’s not even funny. No one gives a kitten about wvw and in pvp you will roll reaper sooner or later.

There is literally 0 point in playing DH over rev

If you already have both, then play both. You don’t have to make a choice between them.
