Hello im lvl 30 atm and i dont know if ive been doing things right for leveling up, so far ive been focusing on chosing stuff with power and condition damage, right now my weapons are a sword and a torch a friend told me that my build is wrong and i should use a shield and a mace and get thoughness note that i just want to level up what kind of build do you reccomend me?

You’re friend is trying to make you take way too long to kill things

It surely makes things easier but in general go with power/precision/ferocity type stuff, GS/Sword+Focus as weapons it’ll give you the most mobility and quickest kills. Learn to dodge and you’ll survive just fine. When leveling quick kills REALLY help as does being able to move through the map.

2 tricks to learn is GS you can use the 3 skill and leap ahead, if there are mobs you can weapon swap to prevent the damage portion and stay out of combat for faster running

Sword2 will leap towards a target you can target something far off leap towards it then click somewhere else to detarget and you’ve just moved forward with no reprocussions like getting in combat.

I level pretty quickly doing group support during events and dailies. It’s recommended that when you solo focus more on dealing damage than taking damage, since you can offset the unbalance with well timed dodges. I recommend you play with whatever style you enjoy, I know when I was leveling my main I would try 3 unique builds a day depending on what skills I was unlocking, what weapons I had were closest to my level and what I was enjoying most.

Since you’re a Guardian as well, you’ll be doing plenty of self heals no matter what direction you go, so extra toughness is like reinforcing a brick wall with aluminum, the extra bit helps but not unless you’re tackling champions solo. And where most games have likely trained you that bigger kills give bigger experience, it’s actually the opposite in gw2 since mobs accumulate bonus xp the longer they’re around, which the champs don’t do since they usually don’t last 10 minutes.

Power is the stat you must focus on.

GS is the fastest weapon for leveling. Scepter+Focus also solid choice. You can do just fine with sword and/or torch too but I suggest you stick to the GS as your main weapon.

Focus #4 and #5 scepter #3 and #2 swap to GS leap, whirling wrath and the mob is dead.

Heal: Shelter is very good but you can do fine with Breeze or Signet.
Utilities: Retreat and SaveYourselves for running.
Smite Condition for burst/condi remove (to remove 20 minutes of cripple/poison some mob stacks on you slowing you down a lot) and Judge’s Intervention for flashing around like a boss.
Bane signet for more power. Power is good!
Elite: RenewedFocus is your OhSh’’t! button.

Traits: if you run 2 shouts consider taking Superior Aria or in the case of two meditations run Meditation Mastery (you don’t have to… these are powerful utilities without even traiting them)
For your first trait point take the Radiance, Valor or Virtue minor.
Once you unlock the master traits take the Renewed Justice from Radiance… From now on killing five mobs take less time than killing a single one

Always have sigil of bloodlust on your GS AND your underwater weapon. even the 2 copper minor one. Power is good!

I sorta laughed. While your initial weaponset wasn’t optimal, it’s funny your friend told you to take something even worse. =p

I would say just take greatsword with sword/focus. Replace the sword if you feel the need to range enemies. Take retreat/save yourselves. For the third utility, I usually just take purging flames so I don’t get slowed down by condis placed on me by enemies that I already killed. When you start getting traits, 2 into honor so you can keep up swiftness with shout recharge, 2 into zeal for fiery wrath, and then 2 into virtues for unscathed contender. Retreat + Unscathed contender/fiery wrath will make things much easier

Also consider using Tombs of Knowledge if you have any

Just play unmatched sPvP games and you will:

1. Learn the class in regards to PvP, not a bad thing (no disrespect, I don’t know skill level)
2. Earn rewards (gear, skill scrolls, and tombs to level)
3. Maybe have fun if that is your thing – you play, level, and equip.

Cons:
1. You don’t get to see the world environment – it is rather pretty
2. Map complete
3. Maybe others but that is just two to get started :0

On topic. I will second the GS. I would also consider Hammer and staff. GS/Hammer is a solid combo to use. Soft cc and great damage between the two. Also staff to beat feet across the map (point a to point b). That is pretty much what I used.

AOE grinding hearts I’ll use mace/focus.

im not exactly a pro at this game, but I level pretty easily using a greatsword only, and taking gear that gave me more dmg, putting in cheap runes n such that gave me defense. the only problems I had were in dungeons
