staff to be a full 1200 range
You want an AoE cone that can attack through walls to be range 1,200…
Something would have to give, and I’d prefer the current staff auto, to a staff auto that has to sacrifice something to get 1,200
I’d trade Wave of Wrath for this anytime.
Staff auto is already awesome.
Sucks if anyone want to have a 2h weap build. Have too keep swapping weapons kuz you don’t have enough range with staff.
Let’s see.
Scepter → 1200 range, but can only hit 1 target.
Staff → 600 range, but can hit 5 targets.
Lorella Windrunner – 80 Thief
Shayera Nightfall – 80 Mesmer
i think the scepter needs to be homing/locked on target and staff would be fine if they made the range up to 1200, you still only hit 5 targets, maybe narrow the cone.
That would be so overpowered its not even funny. Staff is already very good the way it is.
They are already making ugly faces at AoE, I wouldn’t expect a buff to the Staff’s AoE auto-attack.
I think adding a 1200 single target part to the auto attack so that staff guardians hit everything in front of them for 600 but can only hit one target at 1200 (their target)
if this gets put in, can i request the mesmer gs #1 graphics but in blue please
I agree just narrow the cone and up to five targets only.
I definately disagree that it needs to be 1200 just because “staffs are supposed to be long ranged weapons”. I see no reason a weapon type needs to adhere to any imagined requirement of needing to be this way or needing to be that way just due to the type of weapon it is. Staff is an interesting weapon because it isn’t the same as the other staffs.
Scepter is already 1200 range, just improve that and leave staff as a mid-range AoE weapon. Its interesting in that regard, and having a long-range basic attack wouldn’t match well with Empower.

The beam graphic is actually very buggy on all weapons that uses it.
- If you hit a structure the beam has no target to link the beginning and end points, so it just doesn’t appear at all.
- The beam doesn’t always shoot forward, sometimes your character points one way and the beam goes another.
- Sometimes you use a different ability but the beam still appear.
- There’s an infinite range bug where even if the attack wouldn’t connect, the animation still shoots at the target.
- There’s the stuck animation (ele scepter air 1)
- All that with an obnoxious noise (glad they toned the mesmer gs beam ringing down from the BWE version, but its still annoying, the ele scepter cracking noise is still downright unacceptable)
Beam weapons is one of the most complained about weapons regarding their animations.

I played the mesmer with the greatsword and never got the infinate range glitch.
And the reason they fire sidewards is cause the player is attacking its target while not facing them.
Besides, yes the sounds for them are annoying. But i still kinda like the graphic

the range of the auto attack is frustrating cause all the skills have range of 1200, also not being able to hit targets higher or lower than you is annoying to.
I am necroing this thread to discuss staff again.
attack1- short range cone AOE hit up to five targets. could be range 900 instead of 600 to make it apart with thief shortbow 1 (3/5)
attack3- damage symbol with swiftness, can be traited to extend duration, radius and heal. (4/5)
attack4- self root that gives 15 stacks of might to all allies and heals them if not interrupted (5/5)- THE single skill that people use staff for.
attack5- short duration barrier with knock back. could be better if not the long cast.
very hard to place correctly in the middle of a fight, either the opponent passed the line or haven’t reached the barrier but the duration is over. (3/5)
now attack2- is the skill i have the most issues with…
-the movement speed is very slow, people complain about scepter one, but staff two is so slow you really cant hit anything that moved two steps away…
- half of the time the orb simply passes the target without doing any damage.
-orb of light explosion – in order to do this effectively you have to actually watch… the ….orb….. slowly….. float … (not doing anything else you can do) to detonate it in the exact spot for a huge 240 radius … which is one person… and then they put 15 seconds CD on the skill… (1/5) in my book…
TLDR:
the point of this post is how do you use staff 2 ? i need help with this skill
any tips that can make it useful?
Let’s see.
Scepter -> 1200 range, but can only hit 1 target.
Staff -> 600 range, but can hit 5 targets.
I don’t think I would go so far as to say the scepter can hit 1 target.

You simply fire it on a cooldown, preferably if the enempy is close to you. It is almost impossible to hit a moving enemy from distance, but in a zerg at close range #2 does some nice additional damage. I never detonate it, I don’t see the benefit.

Actually this is one of the best comments i read in a very long time. Thank you sir! This made me laugh.
I look forward to when Warriors and Thieves get staff as a weapon choice… with all their attacks being melee range as they beat you to death with it.
Last time I checked staves in the real world didn’t have much range but are still terrifying in competent hands .
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

So much this. It would be a nice compromise as well with the bounce effect instead of straight AoE damage. Hell, I would be fine if it only damaged a single target, just something similar to the rifle auto attack for warriors would be nice.
I just find it odd that the staff is a 1,200 range weapon for all the other classes that can use it. And this can be applied to the scepter as well which is 900 range for the others and 1,200 for the guardian.

Scepter used to be 900 range during BWE. Back then people had already been complaining about lack of range on the Guardian, so the devs changed it as a compromise. It’s a change that doesn’t actually mean anything but it sort of sated the forum bloodlust for a while.

I don’t have any problem with the Guardian Scepter being 1200 range instead of 900. I don’t see that ranges have to match perfectly between every profession that can use the weapon, as I already mentioned. Variety in range is fine by me, and interesting even.
However, its pretty odd that Scepter can hit out to 1200 with Smite and Orb but only 900 on Chains. For a long time I kept seeing Chains of Light fail when I would use it and couldn’t figure out why, and then I looked at the tooltip and saw the range. I can only assume that for some reason Chains of Light didn’t get converted over to the longer range when Scepter got extended range (at least I assume thats the case, I see no actual reason for having a shorter range other than that) and wish it would get fixed.

If they make scepter #3 into 1200 range then scepter would truly be a 1200 range combat option, but that was never the intent behind the change. The change to #1 and #2, (and also torch 4-2, focus 4) is to give Guardians an option to sit at 1200 range and do at least something, not allowing them to fight at that range.
