sword focus and greatsword
okey, thank you very much. how about optimal build then? was thinking either 10/30/30/0/0 or 0/30/30/5/5, does this make sense?
The current build most people are running in organised groups is 10/30/0/5/25. Theres a lot of options really though.

I believe 10/30/30 is the pure dps build but I wouldnt recommend that seeing as you usually take a guardian for reflects and condi removal which is why having traits in virtues is pretty important.
Actually I don’t like sword/focus that much in PvE. Not such a big AoE like GS (useful against trash mobs) and very low support compared to the hammer against hard mobs and bosses.

Thanks for the info. Gonna read up on that thread more after dinner
As a beta-guardian and main guardian I have the following opinion:
Staff
Greatsword
Hammer
I’m traited 20/15/0/30/5, all symbols, full clerics. These are your most important weapons. Mace will do in a pince, IF paired with focus. (sword and torch are basically novelty weapons, and shield will have it’s uses in specific fights but that’s it.)
You don’t do as much damage as a zerker warrior. Thats not what you are there for. Constant vuln, blind, might and healing. Battle grease. Get 2 of these together with 3 zerkers and you can take down any non-world boss in the game.
oh btw, how about gear. Full zerker the thing to go on guardian as well or mix in some cavalier or something for some survivability to make sure you’re alive while shouting at your friends? :P
Zerker should be fine. It may take some getting use to but you will become a far better player if you learn the hard way. If you are struggling with the low hp just use a build with 25 or 30 pts in honour.
Most weapons are very similar in damage output if built right, choose the ones you like n run with um. Staff is lowest, Hammer is a bit lower than the rest but not by much and it gives some nice benefits.
Zerker is doable, I mix in 2 pcs of soldiers for a bit more HP if I’m not running Honor.
GL out there
Blood~
Great tips everyone! I’m pretty used running zerker with my warrior but that is ofc more base hp.
I like Sword with any off hand really so gonna try them all out to the fullest.

There are better classes for both reflecting and condition removal. With the buff to mantras in two weeks mesmers will be pretty much king of both. If I were to take a guardian, it’d be more for consistent AOE damage and, in pugs, ability to stack protection with a hammer.
Sword is still our best DPS weapon by far, and it pairs nicely with Focus for some added defense.
Don’t waste points in valor. Do something like 15/15/0/20/20 or some of the other builds people say. I personally do a 15/15/0/30/10 cause I like PoV too much and the 10 in in the bottom still gives me virtue buffs and faster WoR. My main weapon is hammer and scepter/focus as secondary. Sometimes I will switch out to GS when needed. Remember, guards are mostly wanted/needed for cleanses and running shortened cooldowns on shouts with PoV will do the job very well as well as giving you enough points to make a decent little dmg build too.
And built right, hammer will do very close if not the same as GS. MB is a very nice skill with quick cooldown and I’ve seen almost 7k hits out of it which rival WW from GS. And you don’t need 2H mastery to make hammer work well like you do with GS which frees up 1 trait. But each weapon has it’s perks like GS is great for rounding up guys into nice tight balls to aoe where hammer is great at stopping that mob from chasing the guy in the back.

Currently, the best pve weapon is a bottle. Traits don’t matter, neither does profession. Truly a fearsome weapon of mass destruction.
Sword > *, 10/30/spent the rest wherever

Personally, I find that Hammer or Sword/Focus with Scepter/Focus on a secondary weaponset to be the best. However, I’m not really a fan of the Greatsword. The damage is inconsistent because of the awkward mechanics of Whirling Wrath and the low auto-attack dps compared to the rest of the weapon skills on the GS.
Between Hammer and Sword, it’s a pretty close tie though. Sword edges you a bit more dps (pun intended), but Hammer gives more access to blast finishers which is great for stacking might and the protection from the auto-attack seal is great for any other teammates in melee.
I feel like Sword/focus or torch ,10/30/0/20/10 with full zerker and soldier runes might be something for me.
Focus is what you want since roj is another blind to keep your group alive as well as 6 more vuln and shield of wrath is pretty important to keeping you alive, does a lot of damage, and is a blast finisher. Torch is terrible. Scholar runes are best and 20 in honor is a waste unless your running hammer. The best build for most people would be 10/30/0/5/25.

Sword has the easiest and most consistent damage and isn’t subject to disruption by interrupts or chill, and is most affected by Quickness. GS has higher overall damage and can be used in a swap+burst damage rotation, but Whirling Wrath can be inconsistent sometimes.
Hammer is weaker than both but it has very strong AOE and like sword is more consistent. It also gives a permanent protection boon which is a pug saver.
I though honor would be rather nice because of empowering might and 1h sword with RHS. What would be the focus in virtues? what traits are the important ones?

Master of Consecrations since there are so many good consecrations that make a difference. Wall of Reflect alone justifies this talent for most dungeons.
Also Absolute Resolution is very strong for cleansing your party.
20 in honour is fine for when you are starting out. The extra hp helps a lot. Just be ready to move on to a better build when you feel more comfortable.
Either go the full 30 in honor to get PoV or skip it. PoV is really nice unless you are gonna go 20 in virtue to get the trait absolute resolution. Then take renewed focus so you can clean another 3 conditions if really needed as well as purging flames. Me personally I like the 30 in honor for PoV. That’s why I run a 15/15/0/30/10. Still got master of consecration for faster and longer WoR but also PoV. 30 in radiance is good if you use sword/X, otherwise 15 in radiance is enough to get you the blinds and resets per kill on the virtue. Check the threads, there is a guy who did a recent youtube with the highest dps build that still offers good utility. It’s a 15/15/0/20/20 build. I mean you could go with a build with max radiance but if you’re gonna do that, why not just roll a warrior who has access to more weapons, does more dps while bringing utility/banners and has higher HPs.

Because a warrior isn’t a guardian and doesn’t even have the radiance trait line… :P
Yeah I like PoV too, but I really like some other stuff in the lines more, that’s why I was thinking soldier runes, to get the effect without traiting.
Will have to look for that youtube clip.
Yeah, wasen’t really directing it at you. Was more in general for all those people who forsake buffs and cleanses and try to max dps for themselves. In that case, better off as a warrior for the reasons I posted. Guards just shine for condition removal and buffs, why not capitalize on that as well as having decent dps. I ran a set with soldiers rune and it worked good too. Just depends what you feel good with. I also run a zerker set with full scholars and a PVT set with a mix of runes to maximize my buff duration. I just switch out as needed depending on the group although I don’t use my soldier set anymore since I got PoV.
Here’s the video for dps builds and why he does the stuff. He also has hammer builds etc etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GKZP3oyik0

Thanks for the link Sauzo!
My goal with the guardian is to have good dps and also bring party utility, mainly with WoR and shouting buffs at them (aegis at critical points for instance)
