Hi everyone, i’d like to ask for some advice. I would like to make a mesmer once more. My highest lvl mesmer was around 45-48, but i deleted it many months ago as i felt that i just couldn’t find the right build and i just couldn’t get the hang of the class. Since then i’ve been wanting to try it out “for real”, but when i made a mesmer again, i felt the same again – i couldn’t get the hang of it, and didn’t really feel like i was doing the right things. (this is pve, especially the speed of killing mobs is what bothers me a bit…)

So i’d like to ask you guys; what tips and tricks can you give to a newb mesmer? What traits and skills can make leveling easy and fast, what should i do if i want high dps – should i use GS, a build centered around shatters? How good are mantras? (i know the dec 10 patch will give a little boost to mantra builds) Any tip would be appreciated.

What is your main class? Concerning the mesmer, you will never be able to mindlessly burn down mobs as easy as a necro can or blindly tank them as easily as a guardian. Mesmers are a more active class and requires more movement to maximize your potential. Also, I would not consider mesmer to be the most optimal class for pve. Without its utility you’d be better off with a warrior. That said, I think mesmer is far more fun to play than a warrior and fun is the whole point of playing a game. In contrast, mesmer excels at pvp and does quite well in wvw.

Taking those things into account will help you gain perspective on what the mesmer is capable of. Also, it’s hard compare a mesmer’s potential to other classes until you hit at least 40. It’s preferable that you hit 80 first or at least test it out in hotm.

Yes, i know mesmer shines in higher levels and is considered to be a very mobile and tricky class. In fact, that’s part of why i’ve always wanted to play mesmer I tried almost every class (the exception is ele and warrior) to higher levels, and yes guardian and necro can get boring sometimes.
I know it’s not the same but thief is similarly mobile and tricky that mes, and i really enjoyed that class and found my style as a thief – i just felt like i can’t find my playstyle with a mesmer. I liked all the teleporting, conditions, the escapability in certain situations but it all just added up a bit too…. chaotic i think. I didn’t really know how to handle the class well, is all. I know it’s not the class lacking but me. That’s why i asked advice on how exactly to handle certain things

At level 40, make sure you get deceptive evasion, and it should be much better from there :P.

Just know that reading the guides kind of spoils the fun of experimenting yourself, but if you’re ok with that, go ahead :P. If experimenting is your thing, just try every weapon out. (single target phantasms do more damage than multi target).
