So, I’ve just started my mesmer (Level 12) and I’m just a bit worried about how I will do later on.

Are mesmers any good at farming areas like Orr? Can they do well and are they picked often in dungeons?

I don’t feel very strong in PvE right now (I prefer PvE. Not one for PvP). On my Guardian, Warrior and Thief I was easily able to solo veteran mobs at my level but I struggle with my mesmer because they seem to kill my clones faster that I can produce them (with mirror images and decoy) and then just focus me down. Am I playing mesmer wrong?

For PvE, try using Phantasms rather than clones. Clones die instantly, and are really only useful in PvP, or if you’re using shatter.

Which skills/weapons do you recommend with Phantasms? Right now I’m running Gs/Staff. And how many Phantasms should I lay down to deal with 1 mob? My auto-attack does ridiculously low damage even with power upgrades.

@AnimatedWolf, its quite normal at lvl 12 mesmers seem a bit weak. But they scale A LOT in power as you lvl.
GS/Staff its a quite good combo. Even when staff doesnt bennefit from power as much as greatsword the staff has some ridiculous survival skills wich are always nice. Once you hit lvl 15 get Illusionists Celerity and your ilusions will have 20% less cooldown. That will help you a lot. Once you get lvl 40 youll be a mass clone production factory and youll start to see how powerfull mesmers can be and how much fun
Btw… staff seems to do low dmg but staff autoattack and staff clones aply conditions, so it melt mobs quite fast in fact.
Other weps you might try are 1h sword and pistol or focus as offhand. Scepter and torch are considered less powerfull but they have some interesting skills. Idk, just try whatever wep it drops for you

Stick with it. I love my mesmer but I did not really start “feeling it” until about level 40 or so. Since then it has been awesome even post lvl 80. In fact i have tried several other classes since then and every time I play them I feel like “why am I not on my mesmer”

Don’t worry, once you get all the right traits veterans and even most champions will be easy for you to solo. Farming Orr events for gold and karma is not great, other professions can do that much better. Mesmers are definitely wanted for dungeons (wvw too).

I farm Orr events perfectly fine. Mesmers can tag all mobs, even if there are multiple groups at a time.
Leveling can be a bit of a chore in the lower levels, but it will get better at some point.

@OP I recommend stick with phatasms for their heavy damage, use a Greatsword for range and a couple conditions, and sword and focus for high damage.
Phantasm on greatsword does big damage, and focus #5 phantasm is great in pve, because mobs dont move around much.

Kai and Esplen have it right, Mesmer can tag mobs easy peesy. Shatters are AOE after all and we have more than enough illusion generation capabilities for shatter fodder, add in your regular attacks and it’s no problem. Just don’t camp at pent/shelter where there’s 500 people and you won’t have any trouble at all lol. I bet even ele have trouble tagging things at that kitten pent/shelter event that everyone sits at :P Best ones for loot are the temple events. If you keep looking at Lyssa she will keep spawning oodles of adds for you to tag = oodles of loot. But the guys who actually want that temple open will hate you xD

I would like to see all 3 of you people tag all of the last 2 plinx events mobs on a high pop server where all the mobs die within 2 seconds. Please go ahead and prove your delusional points. Even the best tagging specs can’t tag all mobs, let alone mesmers.

Nice, so you twist our words. It is possible, but it is also possible for a Mesmer to deal ranged DPS with a Scepter.

By definition, it is possible to tag every mob, but the circumstances have to be right, saying it’s a high pop server is like telling someone to deal 50% of a mobs life to a mob that has 51% current hp while 3 people are actively hitting it. Again, there is still a possibility that it can come out working, but it’s not going to happen every time.

I’d put it this way:
Can a mesmer reliably tag all of the mobs when there is no contest anyway? Yes, he can.

Can a mesmer reliably tag all of the mobs in a situation where the ability to tag mobs actually counts, due to them being contested? No he can’t.

It might happen for some of them, you will probably be able to get gold reward anyway, but I think it is a generally accepted fact that mesmers have the worst skillset for that particular situation. Really, show me a class that does worse at it.

You can tag mobs fine in a situation where there’s not a hundred other people vying for the same mobs- in that situation everyone is going to have trouble tagging mobs. And why the heck would you even bother trying? There’s tons of places where you aren’t competing with so many people that mob tagging is a problem. Try using your brain, open your eyes, and go check out the oodles of other events or non events to farm at.

Because other professions have specs that can actually farm really well while still competing with others, all decked out in MF gear. Get the point?

I did not say mesmers are useless at tagging, I said they are one of the worst. And they most certainly can not tag all mobs in Orr events, because no profession can tag all mobs that spawn in different places at the same time, let alone mesmers.

I farm quite well on my mesmer. If you don’t like the way mesmer tags mobs quit your cry babying and go roll one of those other classes that you seem to think are better :P

I have both a warrior and ele in full MF gear I grind events with, much more efficiently than my mesmer in full zerker gear might I add one last time

Then you hit level 40/60 and everything in the world is filled with sunshine, butterflies, and happiness. Seriously, mesmer is continually the only class you here people say “just grind it out, I swear it gets better”.

And also is one of the classes youll hear a lot of ppl saying (including myself) “after playing my mesmer i cant stan any other class for long”

this is exactly what i experienced…

mesmer is bad at low levels because it needs lot of traits and skills to work.

Mesmer is an interesting and fun profession, like some Others….
