As a Mesmer, how do I actually KILL stuff in WvW?
I would probably suggest Greatsword and Sword/Pistol or Sword/Focus to try and kill people. You can usually catch up to people with pistol stun or focus yank and then just do your sword combo, and Greatsword does pretty good dmg now with the auto buff, along with zerkers to chain cripple people.
It could also just be the level difference, maybe you fought a tanky self healing war in lvl 80 gear and you’re in poor low lvl gear.
Mesmer’s tend to be better at people that commit to fighting you as opposed to just running away.
1. Hide under carpet.
2. IBerserker
3. Shatter
(this is actually viable siege weapon destroying guide)
Either you passive killing with feedback, glamour causing confusion and chaos storm. You deal very nice DMG to the enemy an can bring some nice team support.
Or you go gs and sword/x for a power single target burst build. You try to spawn clones as fast as possible and shatter stuff for AoE. Support for you side is limited in this.
What Knote said. You need movement impairing abilities. That means Greatsword, Focus, and Pistol.
I run the greatsword and sword/pistol and I do pretty big damage, 5K+ for each illusions attack and about 2K+ for auto GS attack. I run power and crit build, this should be a glass cannon build but I survive surprisingly long. I can easily win in a 1v2, unless someonekittena tanky, then it might be a bit of an uphill struggle.
It probably is because you are level 53. I did some WvW when I was around that level and I felt the same (although I was running a confusion build then). Once you hit 80 you feel like you can contribute a lot more I found.
You don’t need to use a greatsword/sword + pistol and spec yourself to be a glass cannon to get kills. You simply need to utilize your strengths more. What does a mesmer do best?
Utility. Utility. And, for the love of God, more utility. Kill him with your utility.
Cripple him. Knock him down. Abuse your mobility to always keep up with him. Stun him. Turn him into a moa bird. As you get better with using your utility skills as harassment, you’ll get better at stopping people from being able to run away.
When I used to roll with my guardian friend, we used an analogy to describe our killing process- He was the blowtorch that melted our paper enemies. And I was the rock that held them down and gave them nowhere to run.
Be the rock.

your best bet at this point is levelling the rest of the way to 80. there are more 80’s than not in wvwvw, this means they have more traits than you and more base stats than you.
You look like you’re new to PvP (with a Mesmer, at least). I would highly recommend what I did myself: before going in WvW, try sPvP. Imho, this is the best way to learn how to fight with your profession. With only 10 matches, you will start to be a lot more effective and you will be able to tell what weapons and what utilities you prefer for PvP. Just don’t forget to adapt your build to account for the big zergs of WvW.
If you were running the same build as your PvE build, that might have been the problem. You need a lot of CC, coupled with burst damage. I personnaly go with GS and Sword/Scepter (still testing which one I prefer) + Focus (with the reflection trait).
sword/sword + scepter/pistol and can kill stuff whats the problem
Most mesmers I see are runing some stupid utility build.
Ok sure if you like them utilities stick to them but do not complain when you hit like a wet cloth.
I run a power/crit build with mantras. For other classes this is considered glass cannon but due to the way mesmer traits work it can last alot longer than say a thief with a similar set up.
I often crit for 2.5k-3k with the GS auto attack, blurred frenzy goes for about 6-7k normaly. You combine this with shatter and Mantra of pain (both can be used while you use other ’’global’’ skills) and the burst damage is quite amazing to say the least.
I save one of my slots for utility, I lose 4% damage because of it but in pvp you need your blink/portal/feedback depending on the situation but I have not run across many situations where I need all 3.
When you combine this sort of damage with Time warp you can turret people down at 1200 range to 0 hp in a matter of secconds regardless of whether they are a tank spec or glass cannon.
Be aware however to survive as this sort of mesmer you do need to know what you are doing and be very quick with the reactions. Weapon swaping is a must to maintain your own survivability and cause the most damage possible to your targets.
At most so far- I am always learning.. I have killed people in 4v1. They were 80 but I had orbs on my side increasing all my stats even further.
Mesmer takes some thought to play compared to most other classes but when you manage to confuse people like that and destroy them while making them look like idiots who have played past level 2 its quite amusing.
