Asura or Charr Mesmer
If you were a biologist, would you rather want to clone rats or lions? There’s your answer.
Charr if you want to throw iWarden in the face of your enemies (bonus points if you have the cocroach wings backpack).
Asura otherwise.
IMHO you should pick the race you like to look at the most because if you dont like how your toon looks, then you will lose interest in playing it.
One thing to note is all of the armors and outfits in this game were scaled to fit the human race. So especially for the Charr race, alot of the outfits dont really scale well and kinda look glitchy.
As for advantages in combat, Asura are generally harder to target in a big group. Also because they dont stick out as much, it is generally agreed upon they are easier to hide in captured structures with in case you want to port friendly groups in.
For small scaled fights, Charr mesmers can confuse opponents easier of their position because of the large scaled mesmer Charr clones they create. Although this wont really work on the more experienced players.
At low levels of play, an Asura will give you a small advantage.
Once you get to higher levels of play, it won’t matter one bit.
So pick the one you like the looks of.
I started Guild Wars 2 at launch with an Asura. Then I looted precursors and saw that Legendaries were largely “glowing toothpicks” on an Asura … so now I play a Norn Mesmer :-)
Hiding in keeps is also less about your model size (given your name is still above your head) and more about good hiding spots and lazy defenders. A large race can always lay down too.
Try your best to not make mistakes, but, when you do make mistakes, learn from them.

I love the charr and I love mesmer, so naturally I would encourage everyone else to play…..what they love. Even if charr mesmer is best mesmer.
If you’re concerned with utilities charr utilities are near worthless. I love the charr elites though, I use warband support (extra fun with mesmer cuz it looks like you have 5 clones) for taking wvw camps and artillery barrage to take out tricky siege placement on walls. Asura have some good utilites for mesmers such as an instant daze and some condi on their utilities including poison which mesmers don’t have much of and confusion.
As for hiding in keeps I always bring a quaggan tonic with me on my charr mes.
Sabwa, I can only assume you are partial to cats and/or horns and it has led you down a bad path.
Everyone knows that the best Mesmer ever is:
- Norn
- dressed in a gentleman’s outfit, “like a sir” (Light Heritage)
- wielding a Princess Wand (Scepter) and a Flower (Focus)
… though I may be biased.
Though, seriously … everyone else is running around killing each other with swords, axes, bows, poison, fire, etc. while wearing all this armor.
Norn Mesmer walks in looking like he’s ready for a formal party, wielding a princess wand and flower, and kills people with butterflies.
Obviously the best :-p

Really whichever you like more. Some people say that asura has the advantage because they’re small and it’s harder to see their animations, but I find charr mesmers really annoying to fight against, especially in small spaces.
I think asuras are the coolest race, and that’s why I rolled one when I started. Now I’ve been slowly rerolling into male sylvari, mostly because I’ve grown kinda bored of asura and they have ugly animations in my opinion.
Oh, and charr mesmers are really rare so you’ll be a unique snowflake if you decide to make one.
WvW Roaming with Mesmer
Asura > Charr, and it’s nothing to do with size.
Personally I love the asura lore and characterisation and I can really connect with my character. I can’t connect with charr as well (and I really don’t like the running animations).
Also asura have THE BEST mesmer greatsword animations in the game. Period.
In fact, all the asura combat animations >>>> every other race.

I saw a huge pink norn mesmer in HotM a couple of days ago named something like “Pink Portal Fairy” (IIRC). Was that you? :p
Was an awesome look.
Lol, wasn’t me. My characters all have “Sebrent” in their name.
I’m glad to see other such “manly” looking Mesmers. I like to see people having fun with these sorts of things. It is a game after all ;-)

Pick whichever race you feel like! In this game, all races are equally inferior to charr. Just pick whatever race suits you best, yah?
Asura to learn the class (harder to see the tells, so it’s easier to play), then a Charr when you are confident enough.
Make WvW Eventful! – WvW, 4 years in
Yes, I have 5 lv 80 mesmers – Funny Puns
More from the pro-Norn front … look at a Norn in light armor from Honor of the Waves … you look like you’re wearing heavy … just saying :-)
I’ll convert you from this Asura/Charr fascination if I can! ;-)
Lastly, in WvW … a fast-moving zerg is moving towards your slow-moving Mesmer? Leopard Form —> Stealth —> 1,600 Dash —> 600 Leap … SAFE!
Drop a portal beforehand … very safe :-)

Azuras are just walking meatballs for charrs. So other race too, except sylvari. Silvari are scratching posts.
But azuras has some advantage of size in wvw. Easier to hide in keeps. There are still home server tag above ur character but it placed below relatively other races . Enemy see ur /sleep and start sweeping keep to find you. As charr mesmer me using sometimes transformation to smaller creatures, but this is not convenient.
