Asura or Sylvari
I had a human but got an asura, I hate that the 2h weapons look so small but I play my asura most anyway. Since it’s smaller it feels (falsly) faster. I started a norn and a sylvari mesmer too just to be sure no god kitten cat yet though.
Edit: What I really like about the asura is that the heads are huge compared to the body, like kids so the head armor pieces are also huge (in comparison), and I particularly like the head armors.

I have two mesmers, asura and sylvari.
I made the sylvari because I got sick of the asura animations.
Now I only play the sylvari.
YMMV, of course.
My main mez is human. I created a second mez (asura) a while back and leveled him with the XP birthday scroll and tomes. I wanted to carry my GS on my shoulder like a boss (since I generally hate the GS and rarely ever use it on my human) and have that awesome dodge animation. Plus, I like the asuran “attitude” in the game in general.

Oh. My. God.
I did the exact same thing for the exact same reason few weeks ago.
Now I feel kinda bad for not playing my asura. He’s been my main for so long.
WvW Roaming with Mesmer
First off, several people seem to gravitate to Asura because they think that size is an advantage.
- If you need that supposed “advantage”, you should instead focus on getting better (my opinion)
- In ranked matches, there is an option that is going to make you a human. No supposed “advantage” for you.
My first Mesmer was an Asura. Then I realized that end-game is about aesthetics.
IMO, most armor looks horrible on an Asura, and it is so small that you don’t really get to admire it unless zoomed in. I also didn’t want to put legendaries on an Asura as they simply turn into glowing toothpicks.
Lastly, when using a Greatsword, the Asura Auto just holds it in their hand … Human/Norn/Sylvari hover that puppy and rotate it.
My Asura Mesmer is now a bank tab with crafting skills and 100% world completion.
My active Mesmer is a Norn. I find that having large illusions is more effective than being small. Dueling people with both my Mesmers is how I came to this conclusion as that was the common consensus among them.

No doubt this is a YMMV situation as noted above. It’s really about what personally appears to you about the quirks of each race. If the “smallness” of weapons bothers you about Asura, I think Sebrent’s points above are important ones to take into consideration before you invest a lot of time into leveling one – as it might bug you more and more.
Personally – my mesmer is Asura and I absolutely love her. I use light Twilight Arbor armor skins on her and with the dye combos I have, she looks all spiked-out and sharp, like a porcupine you wouldn’t want to mess with! I just love Asura in general – their attitude, their story (although I seriously hate the experimenting on live Sylvari thing that came out in our backstory in Season 2), and their look, despite the sized-down weapons, armor, and backpieces.
+1 Sebrent
I had to create a new mesmer because of the same exact reason Sebrent explain.

@ Sebrent.3625: How is having large illusions more effective?
@ All: Started with asura mesmer. Started using humans because I was curious about the animations. Female human mesmer is so pretty. Male human mesmers are pretty swaglicious, but their chests are too broad and I don’t like looking at that. Asuras are still adorable and they crack me up when they yell/grunt while fighting. Plus, asura greatsword dance and staff dance are the best!!! I cannot stand the way my Norn mesmer walks or talks. I need to remake a Charr mesmer. I have never played Sylvari mesmer. :O From what you all say, it sounds like I need to make one.

Personally I don’t give a flying kitten about a potential size advantage – I play asura because I love the lore, the culture/society, the animations, the PC voice actors, the personal story, and… the long ears. :p

Yup. The best-looking asura mesmers are basically all dressed like porcupine fish.
and… the long ears. :p
All my asuras have the longest ears possible.
I have an asuan. He’s my kshot warrior.
I made a sylvari once, but then I got hungry and tossed it into a salad. YUM! : D
Sylvari has the best looking armor in the game.
Also, we glow.
i have got both.
When i started playing GW2 i made a sylvari because it was the “elf race” of other games, that i usually play.
As i was getting involved in the world and lore of Tyria, and after playing quite a long time with my male sylvari, I made an asura and the result is more than satisfying.
Asura animations are far superior than other races ones. The way they carry the GS is just awesome (in particular if u have visions of the mists skin). Voices are also great.
The other race that can compite as a mesmer with asuras are IMO female humans. Just because they look very nice in light armor.

Haha, so does mine.
@Calypso.2578:
Large illusions take up more “real estate” on a player’s screen. In a 1v1, my opponent’s (who had large monitors with high res) found this to big a bigger hindrance than me being a small guy amongst small illusions.
Then, when you take it to team fights, your larger illusions are going to better “screen” your allies as well. Even if my teammate is a Charr or Norn, my illusions are blocking some visual sight of them.
Another point I’d like to make… If you want your Mesmer to look like he’s wearing some actual heavy armor, put him in the skin from Honor of the Waves. It looks great. I wear that with the starting Mesmer mask as the skin for my headpiece and it’s wonderful. I’m curious to see how well this pairs with shield when we get that in HoT.

Never underestimate the glow. Not to mention, Psychic Plant? That’s just too stylish to pass up.

Also great with Italian, French, and Ranch dressing.
You could also consider getting a Makeover Kit for your human character.
