Q:

I currently play a lvl 48 Scepter+Pistol / Staff Mesmer exclusively (so far) in PvE. I have hardly used my shatter abilities and I feel like I’m missing out on an integral Mesmer mechanic.

I usually have as many Illusionary Duelists up as possible when fighting mobs and feel the Illusions benefit me more left alone rather than running in for a one off single effect.

I’ve read that they are sometimes sent in to finish off an enemy but the time it takes for them to run in is usually enough time for another salvo anyway if left. Another theory is that there is no regular use for the shatter skills and it’s all situational, but my dps relies heavily on their damage so any effect gained from them exploding is countered by the added time I need to re-summon them in order to kill an enemy. I also use mainly condition damage so need the enemy attacking and when all my phantasms are gone, the only way I can proc this damage is if that enemy’s taking a swing at me.

Am I missing something?

Thanks for any help

If you’re just doing group events and you can maintain 3 iDuelists or iWarlocks, you don’t have to shatter much.

Shatter if their target is about to die, or shatter if you only have clones and you’re about to summon phantasms. Use F4 if you’re about to die, or get interrupted while rezzing someone.

Shattering becomes more effective with thought out builds later on.

I shatter two clones in the morning
I shatter two clones at night
I shatter two clones in the afternoon. It makes me feel alright
I shatter two clones in the time of peace, and in the time of war
I shatter two clones before I shatter two clones
and then I shattered two more.

Shattering clones til the time they die!
