Auto-Target
I think that this is solved by an checkbox in your options that’s called ‘promote skill target’. I think that sorta ‘locks on’ to your skill target and prevents it from changing.
Never heard about clone-specific targetting behaviour.
Closest thing I can imagine, is that the mesmer does some target-dropping + clone generation move (like phase retreat or mirror image) just before your attack.
Edit : whatever do happens, Pyro is right (at least according to the wiki).
Was the clone summoned by a stealth skill? Such as Decoy? As i think that is the way it is meant to work.
I understand when the original mesmer stealths, but I usually find it when a mesmer dodges with the clone summon trait on, or uses the staff 2 skill, etc. If it makes a difference, I do have promote skill target, but by the sounds of it that should help with this problem, not cause it.

I cant remember the option name but i believes there is one that makes you attack a different target if your current target is out of range maybe that’s whats happening.
Also might be what Pyro is saying will cause it not to do that.

I don’t have autotarget on as a thief, so I know that’s not it.

Are they going out of range? Because depending on the situation staff 2, blink and other stealth skills can take the mesmer out of range, causing you to target nearest clone perhaps?
The Corrupt Mesmer Builds

If the mesmer has Deceptive Evasion on and dodges when you come for a backstab, you’ll hit the clone since the original target is evading (and you wouldn’t have hit it anyway). Same deal with the Staff blink move. This just follows from the basic game mechanics, nothing really “special” going on, and nothing you can really do about it.
Attacks will hit what’s there — if the original target isn’t anymore, and there’s a clone in its place, the clone eats it.

Sadly, sice the last patch or so, this trick is no longer possible. Evading, invulnerable or blocking targets now count for the aoe cap, and since backstab only hits one target, they wont hit the clone, and wont be revealed.
Yea. It was a nice trick that required some skill to use, but they kinda dumbed it down and removed it :P
