Building a Mesmer Right
Could you tell us a bit more about your play style, the mesmer has quite a few builds that all play very differently (you can find alot of them in this forum) if you let us know how you like to play, we can help match one to your play style
I suggest you go into the heart of the Mists and just tinker there with your build until you think you got something, then maybe test it in PvP there (if PvP is your thing, if not you just hope that your build holds any water).

I like to be at range but the scepter really sucks for me since i don’t wnna make any shatter builds. so im using the sword because it dishes out the most damage i am trying to figure out what to use for off hand pistol or focus. could you maybe give me an example of what you mean by “playstyle”?

basically i want to dish out the most damage using a sword build, i just don’t know what to place for trait points. also what utility skills do you think i should use for pvp and pve?

Play style is how you like to play, do you like to be ranged and do high burst of damage, or prefer to DoT them up and see them run away and die, do you prefer to be in the thick of it slashing it out, are you someone who chases the highest possible single damage hit, or looking to make your opponents so confused they rage quit the game. Are you a solo player, or prefer to play in a small team, big team, zerg.
Are you looking for PvE build, PvP, WvW build, are you the kind of player that likes a particular element of the class (confusion, illusions, etc)
Moving back to what you have currently mentioned, you mentioned that you like ranged but are opting for a sword based on the damage output. Which would you prefer. Also how are you comparing damage outputs, are we looking at experience in the field, raw numbers, min/maxing, gut feel.
A great build is an individual thing, sure there are “vanilla” builds that are the “rage” but I’ve always found making a build that suits your play style > changing your play style to suit a build.
:)
I don’t understand your argumenting at all.
You say you want to be range, but use swords because of the damage. You don’t want the scepter because you don’t want to use shatter skills.
You better decide what you want. then we can give you tips.
Weapons:
- Sword: Melee, fast, strong
- Scepter: 900, medium, weak
- Staff: 1200, slow, medium, aoe
- GreatSword: 1200, ?, ?
if you want to be ranged, don’t use the sword … it’s the only melee one.
Maybe you like my style – Bleeding build/ secondary healer:
precision trait 15 “illusions cause bleeding on crit”
build up precision and condiction damage as possible, weapon barely matters. Scepter works well over time (durable enemies) because it continuously summons clones. As you like you can shatter them when you’re casting the teritary skill of your basic attack for additional damage. Sword for lower mobs. The attack speed is faster and therefore causes bleeding more often. Here you need to rely on utility clones or dodging clones (precision trait 20:X).
As secondary I go for healing. The trait “phantams grant regeneration”, “healing cures condition” and “heal when casting mantras” are the keys for it. I don’t think I have to explain it.
From the information you’ve given, I’ll start with some things to ensure.
You’re using sword/focus orpistol and greatsword.
All three of those weapons scale fantastically with power and you’re never going to make a bad choice by having more power with that setup -regardless- of playstyle.
Trait support would generally focus around traits for your weapons and then specific traits to boost your playstyle. If you don’t shatter. Don’t get shatter traits, etc.
