Chaos Armor (effect)
The cooldown won’t be removed. It was added in the past when it was deemed that punishing people for poor play wasn’t supposed to be part of this game.
yes chaos armor was great and so was mes during that time cause it was a punishing class, that punished mindless spamming zergs. now it is a bugged petclass that can 1v1 new unskilled players.

if this is the case then at least include this in the skill’s tooltip, interval: 1 second.
the duration of boons should be increased.
Elementalist Mesmer Ranger
Sea of Sorrows
If you compare it to Fire Shield
Enveloped in a fiery shield that burns foes, grants might each time you are struck (1-second cooldown per attacker).
why could not the Boon from Chaos Armor adjusted to 1 sec per attacker.
it would be a fair buff for this skill.
+ People always target Mesmer, it would only be fair to get boon per attacker.
All the boons last more than 1 second. On a good day you can get 15 seconds of protection, (technically 10 by the time the armor ends). If the boons were per attacker on a good day you could get 15*X easily getting close to one minute of protection (and this is without boon duration). 1 min of protection could be comboed with our other skills/traits, or our ease of gaining chaos armor, to have perma protection. I think that is what ANET is trying to avoid.

Except Protection means 33% reduced damage.. and if 5 people are beating the crap out of you..
lets say they all only do 100 dmg each per second but you only have 900 health
100 reduced by 33%
66 damage * 5 = 330
330 * 5 = 1650
You’re still dead, boon stacking did not matter.
No, The only place that CA can be really abused to gain a very serious upper hand is in 3v3 / 2v2 / 1v1 combat.. mostly 1v1 where an attacker can quickly deal 3 to 7 hits per second. CA was useful in zergs for mass boon/punishment for attackers but only when applied in mass.

I actually would be in favor of separate ICD for each enemy that hits you. But they would probably need to change the way the boons are selected because imagine 5 second protection times X enemies hitting you (33% chance). You’d probably get over 30 seconds of protection if it was multiple enemies.

True. And since mesmer is so tanky to survive all 5 attackers….protection would make him immortal!!!….but nope. He would just die.
Your uber 30s protection could also just get removed, stoled or corrupted.
If we add daze into part of the chaos armor RNG, would you guys think it become more viable while not OP?
Other than that I feel the CD is too long for this skill to be significant.

Etheral fields are plentiful on Mesmer (at least compared to everyone else) so coordinating a blast on one of those just to reapply that chaos armor, or use staff which almost all of them do.
What if it isn’t removed/stolen/xfer’ed? -33% damage isn’t little and there are frontline Mesmer builds using mantras. I’ve seen them posted and seen them in use. It is unlikely they are on par with guardian or warrior frontline but the point is they don’t melt, and can give some good support if they know what their doing. (idk how the fun scale is on that but viable and fun don’t go hand and hand always.)

What if it isn’t removed/stolen/xfer’ed?
As someone said above, it wouldn’t matter.
The whole idea of stacking high duration Protection from it would rely on X targets, with X being a significant number, all attacking you. But if that happens, sorry, -33% damage or not you’ll melt in 1,5 seconds tops.

It still doesn’t make removing the ICD justified, especially against multi hit weapons. a 33% chance to get protection for 5 seconds (idk if boon duration effects this) per attack, 1 target alone could end up stacking a ton of boons on that target. Even for its short duration that 1 buff would end up changing the battle very quickly. Only exception is yes, multiple targets focus firing don’t make a difference but nothing really would to begin with. The point is to balance it on a smaller scale where 2, 3, even 4 people putting out little hits on someone with chaos armor would be overwhelming without an ICD.
Perhaps keep the ICD but split it per target and slightly increase the base duration of the boons applied (5 seconds protection is fine, maybe equalize the regen and and swiftness to 5 seconds as well if not 6 seconds). It would still be punishing for the enemy(ies) to hit you but it wouldn’t stack to high. At least if the enemy slips and hits you a few times you get something for a little while from the chaos armor. As for dealing with blobs, that’s not something chaos armor can solve.

Well. Then, for the same reason. They should add Icd for retaliation. After all, imagine how much dmg it can deal vs fast attks skill? cough*blurred*cough*frenzy*cough*.
But srsly. This skill is supposed to make enemy stop hitting you. If he goes all flamethrower on your chaos armor…its his fault.

Retaliation doesn’t stack intensity and it has a much lower coefficient (.75 for confusion, .075 for retal – an additional 33%). So 1 stack of confusion already does more per proc than retaliation, it’s just that retaliation is based on hit frequency vs action.

No matter how much time u blast ethereal field, u would get same few sec of chaos armor. U wont get over 9000 seconds of duration as retaliation gets. Also, u wont get 25 stacks of chaos armor. U wont even get 2. Because chaos armor does not stack intensity. Only boons, which it gives. So its the same as retaliation. Retaliation gives u as much dmg, as much hits u make on target. Chaos armor gives as much boons, as much your enemy hits ya. Same principle.
the issue is:
Q→Do you care if you see an enemy with chaos Armor?
A→ No, not a bit
Q→ Do you care if you see an enemy with Fire Shield?
A→ Yes, it hurts.
My self think twice before hitting an enemy with fire shield, but never care about chaos armor. This is sad.
So the skill hast to be useless somehow.

It’s almost as if people could stop attacking when they see Chaos Armor is up? It has its own buff icon for crying out loud.
Okay but imagine the situation where one Mesmer is moving through a zerg, and getting random aoe. This produces a Xv1 situation without the actual targeting of Xv1. Added is the fact that we can share our boons. Guardians are good but they can’t give perma protection/retal/regen to five people around them.

Gosh, that might actually make mesmer potentially useful other than ‘veil in front’. We can’t have that obviously.

So you’re proposing Chaos Armour might be worth the graphics effect?
I find that Chaos armor is too useful as it is already. If you use glamours and a sword, staff, or torch, combo-fields will give you chaos armor in addition to the chaos armor from the staff. One can stack large amounts of chaos armor this way.

This is one of the combo i use, But……..
even like this, it seems it is broken. If i have 3 clone up and they get chaos armor from torch combo, i noticed that the condition one the enemies/foes stack only for 1 chaos armor, Not 3.

Could be an unintended effect, I would put a bug ticket in and ask them (the one thing they seem to respond to quickly). I would think if the enemy was kitten enough to cleave a group with chaos armor they should be hit from each.

well, i go get sometime 1 min 30 sec SWIFTNESS buff in pvp from thief and guard.
so, i don’t think there should be something wrong getin 30 sec from chaos armor, if 5 enemies attack you.

Protection means 33% less damage. Blind means your enemy misses. Confusion causes them hurt every skill. Cripple ruins their ability to kite. Swiftness helps you kite. And regeneration is always nice to stack. Very useful without unlimited boon and condition stacking.
Not to mention, if you’re like me, the RNG likes (as in about 60% of the time) to have Chaos Armor proc Retaliation, Protection, and Regen

That’s what I’m saying, just keep the ICD per unique target. If 5 people want to start wailing on a target with chaos armor and they manage to live through it, they deserve a little boon treat. If it’s just 1 target with quick attacks having them give you 15+ seconds of multiple boons it seems a little crazy, especially since chaos armor has the ability to not be visible at times (bug, but still).

If you manage to get retal from chaos armor, I’m impressed since that boon isn’t part of the skill.
If you manage to cause any of the three conditions you mentioned, I’d be impressed since chaos armor doesn’t apply any of them.
Chaos Armor mostly HARMS to mesmer because due to it even last enemie noob see where is real mesmer.
So ‘+’ of skill equivalent to it’s ‘-’.
As result: wasted slot at staff skills

Don’t take bugs into consideration for balance recommendations.
If you’re fighting one person and they decide to unload with pistol whip or whirling wrath or some other multi-hit attack when you clearly have chaos armor, they deserve to be punished for that negligence in the form of high condition load and boons on you. If you’re able to activate chaos armor during an attack like that, you should be rewarded for skillful play.
Currently, you are neither rewarded for skillful play nor are enemies punished for unskillful play. This is not a good thing in a game that is supposedly skill-based, but it is more friendly to bad and new players.
@ Fay:
I honestly don’t know where the Retal comes from, I know that I’ll drop CS & hit CA right on top of each other.

Maybe I’ve been lucky to be near classes that offer it and it’s just a coincidence. I’ve thought it was due to CA

Retal’s been coming from Chaos Storm. My mistake. Maybe I shouldn’t stack the two :P

Unload having 8 hits, whirling wrath having 14 (7 + 7 projectiles), take dagger aa on necro or thief, etc and allow them to work with the current boon/condition durations applied by chaos armor with 0 icd, yeah it would be broken. If the ICD is to be removed, the durations would need a look over because of how quickly you would get max stacks of those boons (7 sources/stacks I believe). You would easily get 30+ seconds of protection and 20+ seconds of regen/swiftness which if left alone is not something to laugh at. 7 hits is not a lot, with the fact that chaos armor effect appears slightly before the animation bubbles up, or left over AoE. You can’t just halt all attacks before 7 hits from something slip in.
Either relook at the durations and remove the ICD or simply allow a separate ICD for each unique enemy.

I fail to understand how a shield that procs on hit being an effective counter to multi-hit attacks is a bad thing. It won’t stop things like backstab and eviscerate, but it’ll defend effectively against pistol whip and whirling wrath sort of things. All attacks in this game are dodge-cancelable, so it’s not like they couldn’t skillfully stop that attack to avoid punishment…
Counterplay is good. Skillful play being rewarded is good. Poor play being punished is good. Removing the icd produces this situation.

Same reason for anything in the game to have an ICD, letting it proc freely on its stated parameters would be broken. Chaos armor proc’s on hit, there are a lot of things that fit that, and residual AoE or ground targeted spells wouldn’t be avoidable. Smite from a guardian alone would proc this to max stacks in seconds, and you can’t just tell smite to quit it.
Counterplay is good, and an ICD is there for that. You can still proc chaos armor’s effect, but you can’t reach its max effect from a single screw up. The issue however is multiple targets focus firing someone with chaos armor and them not getting the benefit from each. They are already taking multiple sources of damage meaning they are likely to drop quicker so the condition application of chaos armor should be effecting them each. The effect of chaos armor is strong, the ICD keeps it in check.

You’re not correct. Both protection and regeneration cap at around 5-6 stacks.
