Class Philosophy: Mesmer
To be fair, that’s not how I see a Mesmer. From the abilities we show right now, I would envision our “design goal” as a “trickster class”, relying on unique game mechanics to achieve this.
By this I mean:
- Clones as a form of defence.
- Portal.
- Morphing.
- Illusions (I mean the spell category!).
- Ready access to reflects.
Although I can see where this could cause serious sPvP balance issues, it just seems more “fitting”.
One thing that is true is that we as mesmers are awesome at removing boons. In PvE, it eases some dungeons A LOT where the mobs are very boon-dependant, like the dredge fractal. In tPvP, we’re the most obvious counter to a boon-heavy spec, like guardians or eles.
About the mobility, I don’t know. With blink and portal I guess we’re not so bad, but we’re lacking in the swiftness department. We’re almost forced to use a focus in WvW because of that.
About stealth again yes, if you use torch, decoy, and the two AoE stealth skills with the +1 to stealth trait you can stealth a lot. The difference is, we can’t exploit that as the thief does. The thief can use that offensively by getting close unnoticed & burst, and that’s not something we’re good at.
I guess our ability to stealth is merely defensive. The only one that seems more offensive is The Prestige, though I would swap the blind and the burning. I think blinding your enemies when they can actually see you would be far more logic than blinding them and then cloaking.
What I’d like to know is how developers see Mass Invisibility and Veil. I don’t get that, honestly.
Regarding mobility, yes, it seems we’re a bit slow. Having some sort of speed bonus nested into a signet would be nice.
Also, illusions seem way too squishy. If “without the illusions, they become fairly fragile”, i think they should bump their health a bit without having to rely that much in traits.
They can deal with enemy boons better than most classes, but enemy conditions can often be a problem.
That makes me worry a little, honestly Mesmers should be the best at dealing with boons and conditions, not just better then most. Illusions are cool and stealth is nice but most if not all our damage is indirect, through conditions and boons.
Along with the latest patch notes Anet had this to say-
"
* Mesmers rely on illusions in order to accomplish their goals. They need illusions to accomplish some of their highest damage and control, and without the illusions, they become fairly fragile. They can deal with enemy boons better than most classes, but enemy conditions can often be a problem. They share some of the stealth and mobility that the Thief enjoys, but suffer from a low health pool if you get past all their tricks."So I was wondering, How do you feel they’re doing? Or more importantly, how are you doing playing the class in line with Anets philosophy on the Mesmer?
O rly… my memser has 24k hp… i dont find that low.
Mesmer’s don’t have the lowest health pool.
I don’t know all the professions base health but there are 3 categories:
12k – Thieves, Elementalists?, Guardians?
15k – Mesmers, ?, ?
18k – Necros, Warriors?, ?

I find it interesting to say that we don’t do we’ll against conditions. Granted, we don’t have any condition removal on our weapons (which may be the source for that statement). But with our utilities it’s downright redundant how much we have.
Null Field: Strip enemy boons and ally conditions in the area.
Disenchanter: Strip target’s boons and bounce to cleanse allies conditions.
Arcane Thievery: Swap up to 3 of your conditions for 3 of your target’s boons.
Mantra of Resolve: 2 charges of 2 condition removal.
Then MoR + the trait in Inspiration is even more. I guess that statement probably comes from the fact that we don’t get any on our weapons or as secondary effects like many other professions do.
Also, it’s nice that they recognize that we rely on our Illusions. Now if only the illusions were reliable.
For Xavi, if i remember, Engineers have a 15k base health and so do rangers.
How do I feel about their statement?
