Coming Back to the Game from Launch
Pretty sure there’s some sticky topics here in the Mesmer forums that can get you going. I haven’t really read into them, so not sure how good they are, but there are plenty of great Mesmer players here, so I assume they are good.
Ultimately, experiment and play around with the different weapon combinations until you find something you like and enjoy playing with. If you hate playing with a Staff, even though it’s a nicely defensive weapon which can generate some clones and re-direct players off a spot with its Chaos Storm—well, you wouldn’t exactly enjoy playing with it, so why torture yourself? If you love Scepter/Sword and get really good at using those block skills, even if it’s rare to see a Mesmer using those, who’s to say you shouldn’t use those? Experiment a bit. I personally like GS and Sword/Sword the most atm.
Staple Sigil for most Mesmers is probably an Energy one at least. Many Mesmers also run Traveler Runes to circumvent what feels like the slowest profession in the world when it comes to mobility (it’s not that bad).
Seafarer’s Rest
I’m a PvPer at heart but I am really unsure what I should be practicing with for weapon sets for WvW and SPvP.
This should help ^^

Oh this is perfect! Thank you both for the replies and advice!
Just ignore metabattle for WvW/Zerg. The builds posted there are horrible and totally unworth playing.
What kind of fights are you facing in WvW? Roaming? Zerg? Organized groups?

WvW roaming is admittedly the weaklink but mostly regarding size and not quality. For Zergs keep 1 thing in mind – that section is displaying builds that work in a standard WvW environment, not organized fights at the obsidian sanctum because every guild has their own variants they are running and they are probably the 1% of the population of players who play WvW.
So for large scale battles, this site is the most suitable for him I’d say.
I had to realize long ago that wvw players have no intention to help the community grow, but if you do, you could always propose changes if you feel like something is off. Because it’s a wiki afterall.

The builds proposed for WvW/Zerg on metabattle are… wrong. There’s a interrupt build rated as “great” for zergs (!), and there’s a “support” build rated as “good”. Both have sub-optimal choices in traits and gear.
Will those builds “work” in a zerg? Sure! If you have enough people even 0/0/0/0/0 will work in a zerg.
I’m sorry, but I have serious doubts about the transparency of metabattle admins from what I’ve read on Reddit and on other forums and from what I’ve seen.
So I won’t waste my time on it.

I wrote a very well rated engi carrion zerg build for wvw and it got put in the good category even though it scored in the top bracket. I appreciate what Metabattle tries to do but sometimes they just make no sense.
Edit: just looked and the score has been updated since to be accurate. It was under-tiered for a very long time though, I promise.
