Dat greatsword change.
I was about to make this post myself!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the changes! GS feels viable now! Mind stab is no longer slow and useless, and the auto attack actually dishes out great damage! I love it!
Thank you, ANet!!
I was actually JUST about to make a topic, with the exact same title >.>
Anyways, yes. Mind Stab being functional, and actually usable, it’s just… wow. Four kinds of wow. (Now if only that was the clone generator instead of Mirror Blades…)
And the attack speed increase finally moves Greatsword out of the Guild Watching 2 category, into actually feeling like you’re playing the game again.
…dat Greatsword change. Thanks ANet. I hope someone sends you pictures of fluffy kittens.
Hear hear; kittens for all!
I have to also express my elation. I fell in love with the Greatsword kit early on with my Mesmer (aside from the fact that it’s a really neat to see a caster using a huge sword, channeling energy through it and everything), but the constant downtalk of its viability and the crap it got for its bad damage and #3 was sucky.
After the patch I noticed while doing a skill challenge that my Spatial Surge was going really quickly. I thought I was under haste effect or something! Also, the cut of the “post-damage downtime animation” on Mind Stab is awesome! Here here for “Improved Responsiveness”! This fixed every problem I had with the GS!
Oh my, now I have GS Machine Gun, with additional Blade Launcher instead of Grenade Launcher! Awesome!
If they shift the buff/debuff utility around, and make Might stacks not screw you out of a Phantasm build, I may have to go karma grinding for another weaponskin >.>
Oh God! I live in Europe and I’m at work right now but I sooo want to see the GS changes.
Loved the idea of a caster using a huge blade so I picked a GS from the start, but admittedly it wasnt that good.
Any chance of anyone uploading any short video with the changes? Can’t wait 8 hours till I get home!!
Can anyone rate the 4 mainhand weapons now?
Weapon: range; speed; damage; effect
- Sword: melee; fast; high
- Scepter: 900; medium slow; low; auto-clones
- Staff: 1200; slow; medium
- GSword: 1200; ?; ?
I wouldn’t rate them like that.
Sword is pretty obviously somewhat different, since it’s melee.
Scepter is very low power, but creates extra clones (I did some math on this on gw2guru, in max-clone situations with all utility support skills it still creates ~50% more clones than other weapons do, in fact it requires you to use Signet of Illusions in those situations, or you cannot keep using up the Clones fast enough).
Staff and Greatsword are entirely different. Staff is a multi-attack Condition heavy support heavy weapon, Greatsword is a more single-target focused long-range weapon, both have ok~great multi-target capabilities.
In other words, they are difficult to compare because I can’t think of many situations where I’d want to use more than one of them. :P
I just started getting into GS and this update comes out the next day? WIN!
“Maybe I was the illusion all along!”
I wouldn’t rate them like that.
I rate them like that, when I only compare the auto-attack. Sure, all of them have different gameplay, but I only want to know the basic values.
To be exact, I mainly care of the attack speed with my build. And if the GSword actually exceeds the sword speed (even if the damage is lower), it’d be an great option for me. But it it’d be more like a staff version (slow and powerful), it’d pretty much the opposite.
So greatful for the Mind Stab improvement, I always felt that they broke the flow of the weapon.
I still wish that Mind Stab skill was a blast finisher, though.

Feels like a real sniping weapon now, but I noticed my clones are still attacking slow. It appears that they changed the responsiveness on your character, but not your clones holding the greatsword.
I started farming for Sunrise even before this patch, and now I’m so happy I did.
Massive credit must go to the devs for making these changes so quickly. It’s so refreshing to see after my experiences with devs of other MMOs who seem to have a tin-ear. (I mean you Wargaming).
Very much looking forward to giving my greatsword a go now. My lvl15 mesmer picked up a kitten looking greatsword yesterday but I haven’t used it yet. Now I can.

Can’t wait to try it, was truly my only complaint with that wpn set… now to fix awkward 1h sword skill 3 and I’m gold Z.z
I wouldn’t rate them like that.

Not sure why everyone seems to consider GS a single target wpn when 4 of 5 skills are AOE?
Where are these changes listed?
Maaan.. GS is soo BS now.. wtfff..
its like completely BEAST.. fast.. long range.. high dmg.. +Boons.. lololol!!
Greatsword overpowered. Expect nerfs.
O my kitten dat change.
dat change right here
dis change right here kitten
its called greatswordkanakunalite
Guys can some tell me what changes and when? I played yesterday and it was same…
They increased the attack speed and recovery time of #1 and #3 skill by roughly 50%.
Patch was today: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/info/news/Update-Notes-September-14th-2012
As someone already mentioned, clones generated by a GS still seem to attack using the “old animation”. Aside from that, great change, #3 is much better now, and #1 is now more on par with other longe range dps weapons(ie: longbow)!
There is also no longer a beam connecting you to the target so its harder for people to find you in PvP.
One question. Did they adjust the clone version of spatial surge too?…
Because if so….
