Why do so many of you run up to groups of mobs and use your skill 5 when you don’t need to? The greatsword is a long ranged weapon for you guys with plenty of other skills capable of tagging multiple enemies.

And yes, I know it’s not just mesmers, I’ve had this problem of using knockback skills needlessly with guardians and longbow rangers as well, warriors used to do it a lot but I haven’t personally seen anyone running stomp lately. In all, from my own personal experience, mesmers seem to do it the most, and I legitimately want to know your reasons why.

Sincerely, a guy who is tired of having multiple enemies unnecessarily pushed out of his AOEs.

(Mesmers who know what they’re doing.)

Sometimes the finger slips and hits the wrong key. Sometimes I hit it out of self-preservation because it’s an interrupt. Sometimes I hit it to give me a second to ress or get a skill back from cd. Sometimes I hit it forgetting that I’m on my mesmer, for a change.

=) Just be polite when you point out that you had multiple AoEs there and it does no good to have the mobs knocked out of them. Newer players/mesmers will appreciate the advice, usually, and if people get salty you’re “telling them how to play,” then just don’t worry about it. You can’t help those people. They’ll get kicked from parties until they learn how to play correctly or end up meeting an elitist who’ll tear their head off with their bare hands and mount it on a pike while screaming like a barbarian warlord. So, one way or another, people will figure it out, or not, and will only be able to play with the people who can tolerate them.

It’s probably just muscle memory from PvP, where it’s used to interrupt healing after a burst.

I was maining Mesmer for 2 years, and i can honestly say that i always had this quiet “You have brought shame upon your people” moment, whenever i noticed another Mesmer using GS 5 on a perfectly positioned pack of mobs, ha.

Then again, i kind of understand this being simple muscle memory, as during leveling it’s good to use the knockback just to get some extra damage from GS’ 1 (which deals more damage the further away you are).

As a Mesmer who kind of knows what he’s doing, there’s probably 2 reasons for this.
Either they’re using it a misguided attempt to get some breakbar damage, or they’re just using whatever’s off CD.

Having been that guy before, and having learned it was a bad idea, yeah the second reason is pretty typical for newbies. I’ve been careful to stop doing pushes unless really necessary (I got yelled at once for not using it when running longbow on my ranger when it was actually desirable lol).

I do it all the time because I just want to watch the world burn.

Only kidding – I don’t use GS in PvE.

Sometimes I use a sword and focus, group all the mobs up nice and tight, I let the elementalists gleefully put down their lava fonts. I let them start casting the meteor shower, then….

….BAM! Illusionary wave! Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

I also like to blow up creepers at teq on the stack and before break bars were a thing I would time magnet to pull the mega destroyer onto the idiots pressing 1.

I like to run Sword/Shield or Sword/Focus + GS in open world, and I gotta admit, sometimes I do that by mistake. Like, I’d hit weapon swap so I can instantly press 5 to cast a focus phantasm or Tides of Time on shield, but my weapon swap would have a couple of milliseconds of its cooldown left, so I end up not weapon swapping and instead knocking a bunch of mobs away.

This happened to me while doing AB South Meta, what’s worse is that I accidentally panic clicked and knocked the bomb inside a Breacher and pretty much stalled the event for a good 30 seconds until a Mesmer(the irony) had to G5 it out.

Ya in wvw when I stack a camp in the open by lure (takes some skill) on my LONGBOW ranger I’ve had mesmers come in and the first skill that comes out is illusionary wave, blasting my stack wide apart. I used to play gs mesmer and my first skill was illusionary berserker or mirror blade. I just don’t understand what could possibly be going through their head to think that makes sense. I think they are just trolling ;-(

The amount of times a Mesmer or Ranger has knocked mobs out of my AoE fields -_-

I think in PvE, players just have a tendency to use all their skills in succession. Obviously not all players do, but I’ve seen players (not just Mesmers and Rangers) using their knockback skills, multiple times when there’s been no need to.

Some people just like to watch the world burn…but yeah most of the time they’re just mashing buttons.

Having said that, I think Helseth had a video of him doing HoT PvE to unlock gliding and he was doing knock backs like it was PvP so maybe they are PvP players thinking “ewe get it away from me!”

I can see that. The few times I’ve done pve content with people who were primarily pvp players, it was kinda obvious they weren’t used to cooperative play.

So do you take the time to explain to them why it’s bad? Or do you do like the majority and lament about it instead of teaching new players how to play?

Honestly though I rarely run into this. I’ve been doing HoT metas a lot lately and to be honest I see rangers using knock back 9-10 times per event. I think u guys are targeting the wrong player group. Not saying it doesn’t happen…..but compare it to how many times a ranger does it with LB.

If mesmers have to get rid of greatswords than rangers need to get rid of longbows……especially since longbow is like mesmer greatsword…..does more damage from a distance.

well, don’t forget “X on interrupt” traits, which on the greatsword would be … 5. (though I agree with you, it’s not nice if it’s messing with others, and should be avoided.)

On the other hand, in PvE I see a lot of rangers knocking mobs out of my wells. Its just players that probably don’t know what they are doing. I try to never knockback when playing with a group unless I need a trait to proc or am trying to stack
