Do the Down Abilities Stink?
We’ve actually got some of the best downed abilities.
Explain. They really do nothing to keep you alive longer.
Thieves have better stealth. Elementalists have better movement. Guardians have an aoe knockback. Engineers get one as well. Warriors get a temporary rez. Necros get a fear and a poison well. Those are all better than a very short lived vanish (with a giant icon over your head) and a hard hitting phantasm that doesn’t show up for 9 seconds and attacks once every 3-4 seconds.
nope, mesmers’ #2 is better than warriors’, necro’s, engineers’ #2 and even guardian’s #2 . All of those are easily avoided by blinds, stability, port stomps. Mesmer will always avoid the first stomp. The #3 is not that good, but it will allow you to win some downstate fights, get a rally of a mob etc etc.
Skill 1. High damage + confusion stacking.
Skill 2. Guaranteed to stop a stomp from any class, with any buffs of any kind, with any number of people stomping you as long as there is a target. This is arguably the 2nd best 2 skill in the game, as the thief teleport can be countered with a teleport.
Skill 3. Worthless in condition builds, but this phantasm does incredible damage, often cracking 7k-9k per hit.
The 3 skill in downed state does not matter at all. If you are able to use the 3 skill, it means your enemy has made a mistake. The only skill that matters is the 2 skill.
In my opinion skill 2 fails way too often. I can’t decide about the direction, so sometimes I put myself in even worse position. I want to teleport AWAY from my enemy, not right under his feet, which happens a lot to me.
It might be because I always run phantasm builds but skill 3 seems to do a ridiculous amount of damage.
Skill 2 is terrible in PvE often porting you somewhere where it’s even harder to be rezzed.
I’d agree that Mesmer’s downed state is in decent enough shape.
- #1 isn’t ideal, but it fills a logical role. In PvE, the only way to take you down is attacks. Confusion damages the enemy for attacking. In PvP, it’s still more focused than the Engineer’s “throw RNG” attack. (Though the Engineer’s downed skills are so bad, using them for comparison is practically a strawman argument.)
- #2 can be detrimental if misused. You have to actively weigh the costs and benefits before hitting it, especially in PvE. You can easily screw yourself out of a rez. In return, you get the perfect storm of anti-stomp: an escape that’s immune to both gang bangs and teleporting chasers.
- #3 doesn’t come up often for me, but when I do, it does its job. It generally wins slap fights in PvP. In PvE, it’s almost as good as… well, as simply being a ranger. You’ve got a unit out there actively seeking a target. Depending on the situation, you could focus fire, or use the distraction to hit #4. Because if you’re power based, he hits like waking up next to last night’s bad decisions, and doesn’t need your pew pew.
It’s not the end all be all of downed states, but I’ll definitely take it.

It’s all relative. You never have to use them if you never go down.
That said, our #2 is actualy one of the best in the current WvW meta. Because with it you can drag out your dps absorption allowing you to be aoe/dps’d down before anyone lands a stomp. That ’s the denial of a point right there.
mes probably has the 2nd best defensive down skill among the classes, with ele’s mist form being first imo. only with ele mist and mesmer tele/stealth are u guaranteed not to get stomped if you use it right.
in pvp/roaming wvw stomping warr/guard/engi/ranger/necro is pretty easy; thief is a little trickier because they can tele away right as youre about to stomp, but can be easily countered with a blink/teleport of your own (i especially like using a thief’s steal skill because its target oriented :p).
like many people before me have said, with other classes, their #2 interrupt can be countered with blind/stealth/stability/mesmer invul shatter (love doing that), only with mesmer and ele #2 are you able to stay alive a little longer. theres even been times when i’ve teleported behind a rock or something and the person i was fighting never looked behind there and i fully ressed myself haha.
They all have their merits though. Mist form is probably the best because not only can it not be interrupted but it also requires no target, which is the downfall of mesmer’s #2. If you have no target(IE you are being stealth stomped) you cannot use deception to escape unless you find another target. This makes it situationally better than thief’s because thief downed teleport doesn’t stealth and it is common practice to just teleport to their new location mid stomp.
The only thing I dont like on Mesmer downedstate is, that the #3 Phantasm misses sometimes / isn’t right behind the enemy.
And even if we aren’t talking about the under water downed skills, the #1 underwater is just stacking a rly sick amount of confusion.
Mesmer Downed 2 is great in WvW/PvP, but absolutely horrible in PvE. I can’t begin to count the number of times I’ve been downed while in a bad position and used it, only to end up in an even worse spot than before.
“Hai! I see you just got downed by the Clockheart’s gears. You want to escape? Let’s put you right into ANOTHER gear.”
