What’s the effective range on this? There’s no tooltip help for it and I’ve been experimenting and I just can’t find a definite line to draw where it will and will not allow me to use “F” and enter the portal.

*As an extreme I tried placing the entrance at Ogrewatch and the exit at the SE “garrison” in the Eternal Battlegrounds. No dice

does this give you some sort of self satisfaction?

If you zone into a WvW borderland, the distance from the waypoint to the bottom of the first set of steps.

About 18 seconds of non-combat autorun time.

The edge of your minimap when zoomed all the way in, or between you and half the minimap when zoomed 1 or 2 levels out.
