Fairly new to GW2, and very new to Mesmer
First of all – Mesmer isn’t a class to deal “as much damage as fast as possible”. This is the Warrior and Ele or maybe Thief for single target. Mesmer are supporter and need some time to get their damage up since it relies on their Illusions.

Just pm me for my advice! Always eager to help!”
PvE-wise, you’ll run full offensive no matter what class you play. If you want to do as much damage as fast as possible, thief, elementalist or warrior are probably the classes with the highest burst. Mesmer takes a while to set their damage up and it’s susceptible to being killed by boss attacks (phantasms) while the three other classes I mentioned can pile on damage fairly effortlessly.
PvP, I have no idea.

“colesy’s on rampage today. Slaying casuals left, right and centre” – spoj
Yes, I realise that. Maybe I should have been clearer instead of trying to be amusing..
I want to play a class that can cause players to say, in the words of Elidath, “WTF happend and why is there a mushroom cloud”…
Can Mesmers still cause that much dmg? Can Mesmers hold their own against multiple foes? Can Mesmers take on higher lvl players/mobs? And so on…
In PvP, Mesmer is an extremely fun class to play and have crazy burst potential in regards to shatter, Phantasm and conditions(specialising in one of the 3). Melting players is definitely a possibility with mesmer, and if you are skilled enough on any class, it wont matter what build you have, you will be able to hold your own and even kill a few players.
Leveling is probably the hardest part of a mesmer, as for more or less the irst 40 levels you go through hell, from there on it gets easier.. Mesmers are also very viable in PvE and dungeons as they provide exceptional group utility, the damage is nothing of a warrior, but it is nothing to be ashamed about.
WvW mesmers will be most fun as a roaming role, Zergs tend to, “wham, bam thank you mes” with our null field, veil, portal, feedback and timewarp(the group utility i mentioned earlier) and then leave us to die….
