First time playing Mesmer
Check this thread out.
For WvW you need to decide on a play style. Some quick terminology, illusions refer to clones (which, generally, do no damage) and phantasms (which attack periodically doing damage).
Shatter builds focus on create illusions and “blow them up” for damage.
Phantasm builds focus on generating phantasms and maximizing their damage.
Generally a phantasm build will avoid shattering, a shatter build will create phantasms, but will generally shatter them after 1 attack.
Condition builds (not advisable for your first build) focus on applying conditions to enemies.
What sounds best to you?

I suggest using Greatsword and Sword, because … pink lasers!

I am very new to this Class, I have no idea what is going on. Can you guys recommend a good leveling build and a WvW build for a newbie like me please??? ty
Check out Osicat’s guides stickied on this forum. They’re endgame builds, but going through the video guides will give you a good sense and overview of the class, with particular reference to WvW, and some very well thought-out builds to aim for/play around with (not saying they’re the be-all-end-all of Mesmer, but they’re great builds and you can learn a lot from how they’re built).
Idk about you guys, but I found levelling up with a Confusion Build was EXTREMELY effective… Aslong as you have clones/phantasms out (depends on if you wanna sit back and let them kill themselves with the Clones or sit back and watch them get slaughtered with several Confusion stacks and Phantasms serving them generous amounts of damage… Works either way ;D)

Greatsword is a really awesome weapon for leveling. It’s autoattack is powerful, it has a knockback, the clone ability can stack might on you and (most importantly) the phantasm is a lawnmower on legs. That guy kicks some serious behind, even if you pull a bigger group.
As for the second weapon, I’d suggest starting out with a Staff. It’s more straightforward, has also a very powerful phantasm, the clones are actually useful in stacking conditions and it has great defensive capabilities.
As you gain levels and become more familiar with the Mesmer you can think about switching to a Sword mainhand. That one really takes a lot of getting used to but can be very, very strong in the right hands. It also allows you some flexibility with the offhand, with all four choices being viable.
That being said: for a beginner it would probably be more expedient to start with a staff instead of a sword. But by all means, take that greatsword, I absolutely love this thing.
