I haven’t played this game since HoT came out, but started doing some sPvP again about a week ago. I didn’t purchase the HoT expansion because I didn’t want to spent that kind of money just to play some sPvP matches with a chronomancer. I rocked a self-made condi build without shield or chrono traitline of course and it worked pretty well. Still I notice the amount of disadvantage I have when dueling a mesmer who has chrono trailine, shield condi build. The blocks, extra shatter etc all adds up.

So is there a place for a mesmer (be it condi or power) to excell in this current meta without having to be chronomancer?

To put it bluntly: No. And every other profession is in the same boat.

While the elite specialisations were supposed to be horizontal rather than vertical progression, in practice at the moment having an elite specialisation is still behaving like a straight-up upgrade almost regardless of what you’re doing. There are signs ArenaNet is recognising this and is buffing the core up while nerfing the worst offenders in the HoT stuff, but if so they’re taking the slow and cautious approach.

Mesmer is possibly one of the professions where this gap is smallest, in fact.

U can still be vialable, U still bring the same utilieties like with chrono. Good option agaimst chrono is signet of domination and pistol for stunlocking. They do not have many stunbreaks

In my opinion the biggest problem for core vs chrono is continuum split. They can essentially doubleshatter or double moa, double stun, double kb, double phanta summon – huge disadvantage and if used correctly it shouldn’t be possible for the chrono to lose vs a core mesmer.

Although you’re at a disadvantage in most cases it is possible to be competitive without it.

The video is actually worth the time to watch due to the OP taking the time to edit it and make it enjoyable, but the main takeaway is the fact he made legend using a f2p power shatter Mesmer.
So regardless what anyone else says, it’s possible to play ranked with core Mesmer. But is it advisable? Not really.
