So I’ve been playing a mesmer for a week or so now, and it just seems to me like Cry of Frustration, AKA your F2 shatter is fairly useless. It causes a whopping 1 stack of confusion per illusion shattered, and it only lasts for a few seconds.

Am I missing something here? It just seems ridiculously underpowered. Especially when your number 3 attack with scepter applies FIVE stacks of confusion, and you can apply like 4-6 by putting a warden in an ethereal field.

It applies up to 6 stacks with illusions 15 – illusionary retribution trait. You could trait it to grant you retailation as well. But still this is good for condition heavy builds or in situations when you are fighting against quickly striking enemies. When thief/warior comes attacking you with quickness up its really useful.

I apply 8 stacks with IP and the 15 minor trait followed by an immediate Diversion to get them panicky. Then I dodge, clone, and hit them with a 3x Mind Wrack, which applies 3 more stacks of Confusion. This adds up to 12 stacks along with 12 stacks of Might. I usually preface this with a GS MB, so that’s another 6 stacks of Might.

It rarely results in events quite as awesome as the Shortbow Ranger who hit quickness and rollfaced into my Feedback for 12k damage in 3 seconds, but it’s still funny.

Edit:

People need to realize that Shatters are not just the tooltip. A third of the Mesmer traits augment Shatters in one way or another.

Thanks everyone! I’m only level 33 so I haven’t even got into most of the traits yet. Good to know that those skills can become truly useful if you build them correctly!

Yeah, condition damage in general is subpar without traiting. If you want a taste, I recommend just hopping into sPvP so you have the full point allocation. Doing condition damage or confusion stuff while leveling just won’t be effective. I mean it’s doable if you really try, but not worth the effort.

I’m only 24, but I’m going with a confusion/glamour build because I tend to hop into WvW and back into PvE and want one that “works” for both. That build is also where I want to end up, so want plenty of practice, even or especially when it’s not ideal. Honestly, though, I haven’t had much trouble yet, even when I’m doing multiple +3 level mobs.
