Going to start a mesmer
up to you personally. i use staff as a must then my other hand is either sword + focus or sceptor + sword. my armor is a mix of power vitality cond dmg + precision cond dmg toughness. as for pve i have a lv80 theif and i can say levleing with mesmer was much much easier (u dont nuke well with my build, but u dont die either). as for dungeons mesmers shine, and in wvw i have yet to lose a 1v1 or 1v2.
You’ll go through several sets of gear a day and your first spec will eventually be 10 in everything. So it really doesn’t matter what you do. Try all the weapons to unlock the skills and get a feel for them.
Same for me, i can’t really make the much loved s/p combo work with my play style. Whilst i really love the pistol #4 illusion, i find myself standing issue at range, waiting fur weapon swap to come off cd.
That’s why i went for staff and great sword, both work fine for me since i love kiting
i change my style’s to adapt so i play every weapon on a weekly basis.
Ranged:
Staff+Scepter/Pistol(or sword)
Staff+Great Sword
Great Sword+Scepter/Pistol(use skill 3 on scepter right after f2 to stack confusion)
if solo bring alot of clone spamming and use your shatter’s(F2 first).
Traits(lowest to highest)=power(domination)vitality(inspiration)toughness(Chaos)
Bonus in traits(roman numeral)=Domination:III,, Chaos:V + IV + X,, Inspiration:V+IV,,
(traits/bonus, you’ll end up making ur own combo)
progress:level 80, 100% world completion, only 2 dungeons left in story mode(CoE/Arah) and done 1 path in AC exp, done 1 path TA exp, 1 quest left to finish personal Story(wanna do CoF/CoE SM, before arah SM(Which is intrlinked with personal story)
(torch is also good 4 AoE burning/kiting)
(focus is good for party support)
EDIT:Updated.

Level 1-7: Scepter
Level 7-40: GS and Staff.
Level 41-80: whatever based on your spec/playstyle.
Personally at this moment, while at low level I use a staff. I am going to be getting a GS because I hear good things about it. I need to learn how to use it though.
that is what my problem was when i first looked at Mesmer. I was looking at them in the wrong way.
We make you do that on purpose.
