Great Sword question
hey,
i have to say i really love staff. gives me so many survivabilities, especially Phase Retreat & Chaos Storm. so before i hit 80lv, i used to use staff as a main weapon. but i also have to say great sword is a good weapon too, faster direct damage.
yes, i use auto attack! what i found the difference between staff and great sword is, while i am attack with staff, i have to face or at least i have to keep the foe inside of my view, otherwise the auto attack wont work; but great sword still work even the foe is behind you. i know, we should always keep facing the foe while we are fighting. but just my performance is not good enough.
so about the tip, when i use great sword, i dont walk forward a lot, most of time i use Q or E to walk side, or dodge backward. if the foe gets too close, i use Illusionary Wave( GS 5) to get the distance.
hope you can get something helpful, and sorry for the bad english!
have good time in game!
The greatsword is the mesmer’s sniper rifle. It’s meant to hit hard and fast but at a distance. If something is close enough for you to circle around it then you should be switching weapons.
Got cha.Well I do prefer staff especially when I get mobbed. The bouncing orb combined with clones the retreat the shield and chaos storm usually gets me out of jams. I’m only 40 so I still have a ways to go.
Thanks for the replies.
How are you shooting past your target? GS’s auto-attack doesn’t pierce past enemies. Unless you’re clicking other enemies by accident during the fight you shouldn’t have issues, worst case you’ll hit enemies between you and your target.
But yes, GS is best at range. Once the enemy has closed, you’ve used your knockback, and mirror blade is on CD (it’s best at close range) you should swap to something else.
Auto-attack is used on cooldown, not something you use just for the sake of it. In terms of offensive strength, the GS beat the staff by a longshot. One of the best things it offer is a fairly critical AoE knockback (see those thieves stealth under the house? BAM! No more). Also note that you want to target things in the rear in a zerg – the auto-attack of the GS penetrates all targets before it. Its overall potential dps is leagues above the staff and the spike damage is through the roof.
The staff is best used for defensive purposes. I’d carry GS+Staff in WvW but unfortunetly, you need that focus.
I use GS and staff together too, for offensive and defensive purposes. Outnumbered => switch to staff. On the attack => switch to GS.
Tbh, never had any targeting problem with the GS – I find it one of the easier weapons to target. Mirror Blade is what you should be using – at least twice in one rotation, with some auto attacks, zerker and possibly (situational) mind stab in between.
MB is devastating at close range, especially if traited for bounce and cooldown.

As you mentioned, you can hit enemies that are behind, that if you position well and move along with them, you can pierce for a lot of damage on multiple targets while your abilities are on CD.

I’m aware. :-) Reread the bit you quoted. The OP complained about accidentally shooting targets ‘way off in the distance’ which shouldn’t be possible if you are focused in a closer target.
Oh yah I know. I’m nto correcting ya, I’m just confirming it xD
But yah it’s really weird. Anyway GS is the way to go for ranged and end of story haha
Max range, might stacks, bloodlust stacks, 3k up to 4k hits, hell yea I use auto attack, it’s funny watching people’s health just melt as I slowly chase them down. I love it when they run, the further they get, the bigger the numbers go, the faster they die. I don’t even go to finish them, I’m too slow to run that far, afk pew pew while I look at the map.
It’s the best ranged damage your gonna get considering we’re very CD dependant for damage. (Unless you are phant)
“Maybe I was the illusion all along!”

I didn’t explain my technique when I stated that I miss the intended target at times.
I like to circle a lot using strife left and right when I’m swarmed by enemies. I’m using a gaming mouse, so it’s easy for me to do this. When circling, I will attack while being chased and pick off the enemy while taking very little damage do to the circling. Now with the staff I am able to do this successfully because even at close range, the orb that shoots from the staff bounces between the enemy and hits whatever is closest.
Now when doing the same technique with the great sword, I will disengage the closest target and hit something way of yonder while the closest enemy or enemies, are taking no damage and eventually takes me out lol.
