Greatsword + Staff / Sword Torch [Guide]
-UPDATED- – Changed Precise Wrack for Compunding Power + explanation.
I’ll def. get some video in that case. Do you guys want (s/t)PvP or WvW(solo/team?) I’ll either add in writing what I did and why or I will actually talk about what I’m doing while the video is playing. It all depends on the quality of my microphone. I have a lot of things to do for school, so I’ll only be able to start with gathering footage next weekend, so idk when I’ll get the video.
would like to see WvW(organized large scaled) video..
“There Is No Shame In Not Knowing; the Shame Lies In Not Finding Out.”
If it helps also I am currently editing a fast paced video of every blink and phase retreat location that currently works now as apposed to what used to work. Also some other videos don’t show all of the kiting spots and are lost in the depths of YouTube…:(
You can find me in PvP | I normally answer PMs
I already have few game with this build in spvp but there is something i want to change in the Rune/sigil and could need some help.
So, since I use sigil of Doom and Energy, the rune of Strenght bonus doesnt apply that often.
so should i change the rune of strenght to Rune of the Privateer or something else? Or change the sigil of doom to something which gives me Might?
Sorry for 2 weeks late response.
Don’t swap the strength rune. That’s a big no.
If you really want battle sigils(they give you might on swap), choose them. I use air at the moment, may switch to battle or doom soon. I’ll see.
I had an interesting talk with a fellow mesmer and instead of taking Far Reaching Manipulations he took phantasmal fury for the iZerker. I guess this is a valid thing to do if you don’t mind having 900 range blink. I’ll mention that in OP now.
-UPDATED- 30/6/14
Thank you Jurica for this work!
It inspired me to try the build, and I’m flat out amazed. It’s revitalized my interest in GW2 and brought me back to my Mesmer.
From the guide, I’ve learned to #4 Distort for stomps! Your “main” combo for shattering has opened my eyes. I’d watched Osicat’s videos over time, but only this guide really explained it all. The aggressive game-play which always scared me (it looks so very in-your-face melee range) is awesome!
And in WvW, I’ve been soloing camps, looked up to find opponent players watching me, then they run off despite outnumbering me 4-1.
-Yeah, after Mesmer power phantasm main in WvW from launch, I’d given up and tried out the other classes. Leveled a warrior, thief, elementalist, guardian. Ele the most fun, but still- no sense of awesome.
I’ll be posting again soon, I think I’ve worked out a better gear setup.
THANKS-
Lovely to hear that mate!
Shatter is a ton of fun and mesmer remains strong even after all these nerfs and bug ‘fixes’. I’m not too sure how good shatter is for taking camps, I’ve always had a big issue with that at shatter, I’m more of a PvP guy now.
Guide is UPDATED – 4/7/14
Hmmm… I’ve tried this build, and while I’m still fairly new to it (and I normally have a way more defensive playstyle no matter what I play), it can be fun. I still have LOTS to learn, though.
That being said… I’ve had some duels today. Took an Eviscarate from a Warrior like a noob and was hit for more than 12k because full zerk (me) xD. BUT what I actually wanted to ask… how do you fight P/D condition Thieves? Those condis were melting me quite reliably, and only in one fight I got him kinda low… but he still won. He was running P/D and D/P as offhand, with Shadow Refuge and Basilisk Venom as elite. No idea about the other two utilities. I swear it happened more than once that like… a few stacks of bleeding actually killed me while my condi-removal was on cooldown, because I’ve just removed confusion, torment, poison and some more stacks of bleeding before. Fought him like 10 times or so, and lost each time. So yeah… how do you do it?
I’ve gotten the closest to killing him when I actually managed to surprise him with a shatter while he was closing in on me, but having him close usually was quite dangerous for me as well.

The way you fight thieves in general kittenter is you run. Especially if they’re s/d.
You can beat every thief, but you need to seriously outplay the thief and learn how to position yourself to cripple his damage as much as possible. You need to ID the build in order to know how to fight them. I’d recommend making a thief and getting a p/d for it then learn to play it (In PvP of course) to know the weaknesses. I’m not too familiar with the build, but I know generally what they do. Basically I’d say move around a lot, kite as much as you can, get into LOS positions and keep condi cleanse exclusively for confusion, bleeds when they get to a high stack and confusion. I think p/d is going to constantly be an extremely hard fight to win. Get as much condi removal as you can. Keep blink and null field but replace portal or decoy w/e you run for the mantra.
if u r fighting p/d condi thiefs, try not to be on staff most of the time, u need to pressure them w gs, they will keep their distance and staff dmg s overtime low, when they get close dodge, they either use cloak and dagger or their tormenting skill, both r pretty annoying,
and use chaos armour on staff + chaos storm > phace retreat = chaos armour
thats ur friend
A few more things, they have an initial confusion burst, let them put the confusion on you if you can’t avoid it but don’t use any skills until you cleanse it.
Turn autoattack off to avoid un-needed damage as well.

“The ascended knights trinkets have precision as the main stat.”
They have toughness as main stat. But there are some other ascended trinkets with precision as main stat – still pow prec tough.
We do have some knights trinkets in order to bump our toughness up to 1,2k. This will allow us to take a backstab from a thief and still survive with a good amount of HP.
I’ve been 2 shot by thieves when running much more than 1200 toughness. Does the difference between ~1k and 1.2k toughness really make a difference in your opinion still (this post was 12 months old)?
I think if a thief gets the jump on you and knows what he’s doing, it’s either book it and escape or you die no matter how much toughness you have. Lately I’m almost full zerker with ~1k toughness and don’t notice any difference; a good thief gets the jump on me and I usually die, a bad thief does and I don’t.
I don’t really WvW much, but from what I’ve done in PvP over time, I can take a backstab and still have decent HP left. I can’t however take a hs, steal + backstab, there is no way to do that which seems to be the combo.. So yeah, you can go full zerk, I still think this is better because while it may not be such a help against thieves, it is against other classes.
