Hi,
So im trying to run a zerker gs build for my mesmer but the damage just seems poor. Compared to a thief unload or warrior blades…it seems pretty pitiful. Maybe i am just playing it wrong but what kind of damage can i expect from shatters and whatnot?

The strength is in comboing skills. 2, 4, 3 and shatter in that sequence should hit a target in a very short time period (thieves with 10K HP will melt in a second if they fail to avoid it, anyone else loose at least half their HP). Unload is quite pitiful in comparison, 100b has damage potential but is easily avoided and very announced. You can even augment the damage by popping mantra of pain in the same time, it doesnt interrupt what you are doing and can do maybe 3K damage against berserkers twice (or three times specced). It can be quite a nasty surprise to your opponent when you’re doing other stuff, like ressing, haha.

With ~50% crit chance and about +75% crit damage:

GS Auto- seems to hit for about 0.5-2.5k per hit depending on range
Skill 2/3 – ~2k
Beserker – 4-6k
Mindwrack – anywhere from 4-8k

These are the numbers I feel like I usually hit with (totally going from memory here, probably isn’t very accurate).

Illusionary Beserker—>Illusionary Leap—>Mirror images—>Mind Wrack/Blurred frenzy (same time)
If you somehow manage to land this entire combo on someone with light or medium armor, they’re pretty much dead.

Mesmers are generally just a bad class for DPS.

Best thing I could suggest is you get rid of the greatsword and run sword/pistol and sword/sword for fast recharging, hard hitting phantasms along with a bad-but-not-as-bad autoattack, unless you’re on about PvP in which case greatsword/sword+pistol is quite nice. Thieves and warriors along with elementalists are practically the top DPS classes though, so don’t ever expect to outmatch them damage-wise.

Its perfectly fine in PvE as well, i think you are seriously exaggerating how bad it is. It isnt bad what so ever, first its PvE you can pretty much wear all white gear and have all white weapons and do perfectly fine.

It works great in Dungeons, it works great in Fractuals thats all that pretty much matters for PvE content, and by that i mean content that you cant just auto your way through like all the world events and everything

To use your auto to its maximum damage you have to put yourself out of your party’s boon range, the second ability doesn’t do much, the third ability doesn’t do much, and you use five if you basically want your group to hate you.

If you run main-hand sword both weapon sets you stay within boon range, have a great invulnerability so you can continue hitting through boss attacks, a useless third ability, you still get strong phantasms (traited focus, sword and pistol are all good) and they each have an off-hand utility skill that can be fairly useful – temporal curtain to group mobs, magic bullet can be used to take pressure of your team without pushing the mobs away and the OH-sword 4 if timed well lets you keep on damage without evading.

The only time you should ever use greatsword is if the mechanics of the boss force you to range (final grawl fractal boss at high levels as an example) or if you’re in a bad group who are ranging. Even then, provided you didn’t slip up it would be perfectly possible to melee the boss regardless. Take cof p1 as an easy example, you walk in to the effigy room, you move out the way of the fire attack, feedback the knockdown projectiles and evade the crystals falling from the ground. Of course you’d probably getout-regen’d but ignoring that, soloing it would be fine.

Autro ticks 3 times, great with Sigil of Earth and such, solid damage even at closer range

iBerserker great. Just great can proc loads of Bleeds, AoE and great for 1 Vs 1 fights, all around one of the best Phantasms we have.

iWave situational, like all interrupts should be, great for confusion and might (with rune and trait) works great when fighting Thieves and chaining the interrupts to stop them from stealthing.

Well firstly, why would you be using sigil of earth in a zerker build, and secondly, sword autoattack chain will do more damage than the greatsword channel.

iLeap for a clone? Your party will do vuln and might stacking for you since they can do it a lot easier than us.

iBerserker is solid, yes, just on a shoddy weapon.

It’s great for annoying your party when the mobs are all stacked up in Ascalon fractal and you throw them around everywhere.

Remember, I’m talking about PvE here, in PvP and WvW I make use of pretty much every greatsword ability since they’re much more useful there.

you can do significant damage with GS but you give up so much that it’s not worth it (that goes with any of our weapons if you’re trying to max damage). You become so fragile that it becomes very easy to kill you. This is amplified by the GS’s “encouragement” of a player being away from the action, making you easier to single out and remove.

Thieves can get away with it because of their easy access to stealth, and that getting that stealth does not impede their damage as much as it impedes ours when we select it.

the one thing we can do better is aoe spike damage, however this is only available every 90 (or 72 if you take the signet redux) seconds. I have not noticed it to be devastating enough to merit the fragility you end up having, but then I don’t get to play on coordinated teams.

process is: 3 clones – mind wrack – decoy – distortion if required – signet of illusions – create one clone – mirror images – mindwrack. It doesn’t take as long to pull off as it looks.

If you would like to have some fun I am running a fun AI killing ’zerker build until I move on to a different one. Try it out and see if its fun for you.

Going full glass doesn’t make it easy to kill you at all, you do something called dodging.
