Greatsword or Sword & Gun?
That’s probably because their is no “right” answer. It depends purely on what you want to add to your playstyle. Neither S/P nor GS are useless or overpowered, its just preference, experiment! However, if I personally had to pick, I would say the Sword/Pistol (I personally prefer focus but w/e) simply because it has a nice mix of skills (range phantasm, stun, immobilize, invuln) where as GS really relies on good range management and while it can bring a lot of dps (played right) to your build, it doesn’t have quite as much in the way of variety.
All this is assuming you’re using the staff as your main weapon. Greatsword is better as a main weapon, whereas sword and pistol are quite good for switching to using all their abilities, then switching back to staff.
I hated GS so I just leveled 10 levels with it. It’s better than I thought, but I still like sword/focus better. /pistol I’ve used too, it all works. I like staff for long to mid range, sword in close. With that combo I have something that works great even if I can’t dictate range.
I would say GS for a ranged build. I really like Sword/Gun, but I pair it with GS normally and just swap out GS for Staff when I get into groups or doing dynamic events.
For what purpose? sPvP? WvW? 80 DE farming? Dungeons? Leveling?
Depends.
GS is not a ranged weapon, do not fool your self.
GS is all about Might and Vulnerability stacking, without that GS is lackluster and low performing.
To get Might you need to be just about in melee range.
So, GS is not a ranged weapon because when you have Might and Vulnerability stacked you do more damage at close range then without them at long range.
if you are using staff as primary weapon i assume you are stacking Condition damage right? so scepter/torch SHOULD work better for ya, but who knows i might be wrong, i’m no whale biologist or anything like that…
PD: GS IS a long range weapon, you just gotta be smart enough to get closer when shooting 2, so you get the boon and the extra damage from the skill, also the range for the sword bounce is quite long, it should be between 600-900
