Hating on the greatsword? + bonus question
The GS is still decent for ranged offensive purposes. But the sword deals more damage.
And I suppose you were talking about the pWarlock (pStaff) and not the pMage (pTorch). It hits pretty hard with alot conditions. If you’re alone it’s just medium damage.
It’s true

Staff is a very defensive and or supporty weapon, it’s amazing for difficult pvp, but pve is sadly all about damage :/.
Greatsword is a good aoe and ranged offensive choice. But obviously worse than sword. (Melee>range)

What it’s good at (offensive range) it does very very well.
Staff can be used on zerker, either shatter (20/20/0/0/30 or 0/20/20/0/30) or phantasm spec, specifically for getting huge numbers from the phantasm (I hit 16k during the gauntlet and that wasn’t full glass)… but the weapon in that case is used more for setting up damage from the class mechanics rather than a lot of damage coming from your immediate attacks. Play around with them both and see what you like more, Nevhie’s videos may give you some ideas for GS.

Well staff is definitly the best range boss weapon. In a perfect situation (had it multiple times against dwayna) with 20+ might n’ vulnerability stacks with tons of conditions it dealt 25k damage… each

Yeah I figured sword deals more.

Sounds awesome!
I am currently using Sword/Sword (or focus) and greatsword, having a hard time deciding what to use I somehow feel like I started sucking at dodging when playing mesmer, I die way too much when wielding swords. On my zerker warrior and guardian it’s no problem but for some reason I’m just not as good on the mesmer :S

25k each from auto attack or p. warlock?

GS is great in PvP, WvW, and open-world events. In dungeons and fractals you generally want to stay melee, but there are several situations where it’s still good.

Sw/Sw is a very defensive set, you shouldn’t have any trouble surviving, with Blade Training, and maybe a little bit of Player Training.
The main thing to remember is – stick to autoattacks for damage, and think of Blurred Frenzy as a third dodge, instead of burning it for a bit more DPS every time it’s ready. That, combined with the block on #4, should save you from almost everything once you learn to recognize and anticipate enemy attack animations.

Alot of player training it seems As I mentioned, the weird thing is that I’m usually really good at dodging attacks, but I fail on mesmer
I do like sw/sw though I rarely save blurred frenzy for the survival, thanks for the tip.

GS isn’t a terrible choice, but you’re going to find staff offers more currently, even in many PvE situations. That is because you don’t want to stray too far from melee range, you’ll miss out on all the boons other classes are giving. I’ll use GS on fights where I need iZerker for the cripple. Staff is nice because you can drop Chaos Storm on your group, and load up on boons, have an escape (2 skill), Chaos Armor, etc.
